Regular power line inspections are essential to ensure the reliability of electricity supply. The inspections of overground power submission lines include corridor clearance monitoring and fault identification. The power lines corridor is a three-dimensional space around power cables defined by a set distance. Any obstacles breaching this space should be detected, as they potentially threaten the safety of the infrastructure. Corridor clearance monitoring is usually performed either by a labor-intensive total station survey (TS), terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), or expensive airborne laser scanning (ALS) from a plane or a helicopter. This paper proposes a method that uses unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images to monitor corridor clearance. To maintain the adequate accuracy of the relative position of wires in regard to surrounding obstacles, the same data were used both to reconstruct a point cloud representation of a digital surface model (DSM) and a 3D power line. The proposed algorithm detects power lines in a series of images using decorrelation stretch for initial image processing, the modified Prewitt filter for edge enhancement, random sample consensus (RANSAC) with additional parameters for line fitting, and epipolar geometry for 3D reconstruction. DSM points intruding into the corridor are then detected by calculating the spatial distance between a reconstructed power line and the DSM point cloud representation. Problematic objects are localized by segmenting points into voxels and then subsequent clusterization. The processing results were compared to the results of two verification methods—TS and TLS. The comparison results show that the proposed method can be used to survey power lines with an accuracy consistent with that of classical measurements.

Individual tree height (ITH) is one of the most important vertical structure parameters of a forest. Field measurement and laser scanning are very expensive for large forests. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective method to acquire ITHs in a forest using the optical overlapping images captured by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The data sets, including a point cloud, a digital surface model (DSM), and a digital orthorectified map (DOM), were produced from the UAV imagery. The canopy height model (CHM) was obtained by subtracting the digital elevation model (DEM) from the DSM removed of low vegetation. Object-based image analysis was used to extract individual tree crowns (ITCs) from the DOM, and ITHs were initially extracted by overlaying ITC outlines on the CHM. As the extracted ITHs were generally slightly shorter than the measured ITHs, a linear relationship was established between them. The final ITHs of the test site were retrieved by inputting extracted ITHs into the linear regression model. As a result, the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE), the mean absolute error (MAE), and the mean relative error (MRE) of the retrieved ITHs against the measured ITHs were 0.92, 1.08 m, 0.76 m, and 0.08, respectively.

This paper examines the basic flow and processing of the terrestrial 3D Laser scanning technology in the tunnel survey. The use of the method is discussed, point cloud data which have been registered, cropped can be constructed to a complete tunnel surface model. An example is given to extract the tunnel section and calculate the excavation of the tunnel. Result of the experimental application of this analysis procedure is given to illustrate the proposed technique can be flexibly used according to the need based on its 3D model. The feasibility and advantages of terrestrial 3D laser scanning technology in tunnel survey is also considered.

Full-waveform (FWF) LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems have their advantage in recording the entire backscattered signal of each emitted laser pulse compared to conventional airborne discrete-return laser scanner systems. The FWF systems can provide point clouds which contain extra attributes like amplitude and echo width, etc. In this study, a FWF data collected in 2010 for Eisenstadt, a city in the eastern part of Austria was used to classify four main classes: buildings, trees, waterbody and ground by employing a decision tree. Point density, echo ratio, echo width, normalised digital surface model and point cloud roughness are the main inputs for classification. The accuracy of the final results, correctness and completeness measures, were assessed by comparison of the classified output to a knowledge-based labelling of the points. Completeness and correctness between 90% and 97% was reached, depending on the class. While such results and methods were presented before, we are investigating additionally the transferability of the classification method (features, thresholds …) to another urban FWF lidar point cloud. Our conclusions are that from the features used, only echo width requires new thresholds. A data-driven adaptation of thresholds is suggested.

Soil roughness represents fine-scale surface geometry which figures in many geophysical models. While static photogrammetric techniques (terrestrial images and laser scanning) have been recently proposed as a new source for deriving roughness heights, there is still need to overcome acquisition scale and viewing geometry issues. By contrast to the static techniques, images taken from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) can maintain near-nadir looking geometry over scales of several agricultural fields. This paper presents a pilot study on high-resolution, soil roughness reconstruction and assessment from UAV images over an agricultural plot. As a reference method, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) was applied on a 10 m x 1.5 m subplot. The UAV images were self-calibrated and oriented within a bundle adjustment, and processed further up to a dense-matched digital surface model (DSM). The analysis of the UAV- and TLS-DSMs were performed in the spatial domain based on the surface autocorrelation function and the correlation length, and in the frequency domain based on the roughness spectrum and the surface fractal dimension (spectral slope). The TLS- and UAV-DSM differences were found to be under ±1 cm, while the UAV DSM showed a systematic pattern below this scale, which was explained by weakly tied sub-blocks of the bundle block. The results also confirmed that the existing TLS methods leads to roughness assessment up to 5 mm resolution. However, for our UAV data, this was not possible to achieve, though it was shown that for spatial scales of 12 cm and larger, both methods appear to be usable. Additionally, this paper suggests a method to propagate measurement errors to the correlation length.

Nowadays, Unmanned Aerial System (UAS)-based photogrammetry offers an affordable, fast and effective approach to real-time acquisition of high resolution geospatial information and automatic 3D modelling of objects for numerous applications such as topography mapping, 3D city modelling, orthophoto generation, and cultural heritages preservation. In this paper, the capability of four different state-of-the-art software packages as 3DSurvey, Agisoft Photoscan, Pix4Dmapper Pro and SURE is examined to generate high density point cloud as well as a Digital Surface Model (DSM) over a historical site. The main steps of this study are including: image acquisition, point cloud generation, and accuracy assessment. The overlapping images are first captured using a quadcopter and next are processed by different software to generate point clouds and DSMs. In order to evaluate the accuracy and quality of point clouds and DSMs, both visual and geometric assessments are carry out and the comparison results are reported.

Over the past decade, large-scale photogrammetric products have been extensively used for the geometric documentation of cultural heritage monuments, as they combine metric information with the qualities of an image document. Additionally, the rising technology of terrestrial laser scanning has enabled the easier and faster production of accurate digital surface models (DSM), which have in turn contributed to the documentation of heavily textured monuments. However, due to the required accuracy of control points, the photogrammetric methods are always applied in combination with surveying measurements and hence are dependent on them. Along this line of thought, this paper explores the possibility of limiting the surveying measurements and the field work necessary for the production of large-scale photogrammetric products and proposes an alternative method on the basis of which the necessary control points instead of being measured with surveying procedures are chosen from a dense and accurate point cloud. Using this point cloud also as a surface model, the only field work necessary is the scanning of the object and image acquisition, which need not be subject to strict planning. To evaluate the proposed method an algorithm and the complementary interface were produced that allow the parallel manipulation of 3D point clouds and images and through which single image procedures take place. The paper concludes by presenting the results of a case study in the ancient temple of Hephaestus in Athens and by providing a set of guidelines for implementing effectively the method.

In this work, laboratory tests with live bivalves as well as the conceptual design of additively manufactured surrogate models are presented. The overall task of this work is to develop a surrogate best fitting to the live mussels tested in accordance to the identified surface descriptor, i.e., the Abbott–Firestone Curve, and to the hydrodynamic behaviour by means of drag and inertia coefficients. To date, very few investigations have focused on loads from currents as well as waves. Therefore, tests with a towing carriage were carried out in a wave flume. A custom-made rack using mounting clamps was built to facilitate carriage-run tests with minimal delays. Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) extracted from a site in Germany, which were kept in aerated seawater to ensure their survival for the test duration, were used. A set of preliminary results showed drag and inertia coefficients C D and C M ranging from 1.16–3.03 and 0.25 to 1.25. To derive geometrical models of the mussel dropper lines, 3-D point clouds were prepared by means of 3-D laser scanning to obtain a realistic surface model. Centered on the 3-D point cloud, a suitable descriptor for the mass distribution over the surface was identified and three 3-D printed surrogates of the blue mussel were developed for further testing. These were evaluated regarding their fit to the original 3-D point cloud of the live blue mussels via the chosen surface descriptor.

VLS (Vehicle-borne Laser Scanning) can easily scan the road surface in the close range with high density. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) can capture a wider range of ground images. Due to the complementary features of platforms of VLS and UAV, combining the two methods becomes a more effective method of data acquisition. In this paper, a non-rigid method for the aerotriangulation of UAV images assisted by a vehicle-borne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point cloud is proposed, which greatly reduces the number of control points and improves the automation. We convert the LiDAR point cloud-assisted aerotriangulation into a registration problem between two point clouds, which does not require complicated feature extraction and match between point cloud and images. Compared with the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, this method can address the non-rigid image distortion with a more rigorous adjustment model and a higher accuracy of aerotriangulation. The experimental results show that the constraint of the LiDAR point cloud ensures the high accuracy of the aerotriangulation, even in the absence of control points. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the checkpoints on the x, y, and z axes are 0.118 m, 0.163 m, and 0.084m, respectively, which verifies the reliability of the proposed method. As a necessary condition for joint mapping, the research based on VLS and UAV images in uncontrolled circumstances will greatly improve the efficiency of joint mapping and reduce its cost.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Point clouds acquired using Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) are applied to extract road information such as curb stones, road markings, and road side objects. In this paper, we present a scanline-based MLS point cloud segmentation method for various road and road side objects. First, end points of the scanline, jump edge points, and corner points are extracted as feature points. The feature points are then interpolated to accurately extract irregular parts consisting of irregularly distributed points such as vegetation. Next, using a point reduction method, additional feature points on a smooth surface are extracted for segmentation at the edges of the curb cut. Finally, points between the feature points are extracted as flat segments on the scanline, and continuing feature points are extracted as irregular segments on the scanline. Furthermore, these segments on the scanline are integrated as flat or irregular regions. In the extraction of the feature points, neighboring points based on the spatial distance are used to avoid being influenced by the difference in the point density. Based on experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed method was indicated based on an application to an MLS point cloud.</p>

Power lines classification is important for electric power management and geographical objects extraction using LiDAR (light detection and ranging) point cloud data. Many supervised classification approaches have been introduced for the extraction of features such as ground, trees, and buildings, and several studies have been conducted to evaluate the framework and performance of such supervised classification methods in power lines applications. However, these studies did not systematically investigate all of the relevant factors affecting the classification results, including the segmentation scale, feature selection, classifier variety, and scene complexity. In this study, we examined these factors systematically using airborne laser scanning and mobile laser scanning point cloud data. Our results indicated that random forest and neural network were highly suitable for power lines classification in forest, suburban, and urban areas in terms of the precision, recall, and quality rates of the classification results. In contrast to some previous studies, random forest yielded the best results, while Naïve Bayes was the worst classifier in most cases. Random forest was the more robust classifier with or without feature selection for various LiDAR point cloud data. Furthermore, the classification accuracies were directly related to the selection of the local neighborhood, classifier, and feature set. Finally, it was suggested that random forest should be considered in most cases for power line classification.
