The presence of None-line-of-sight (NLOS) is one of the major challenging issues in time of arrival (TOA) based source localization, especially for the sparse anchor scenarios. Sparse anchors can reduce the system deployment cost, so this has become increasingly popular in the source location. However, fewer anchors bring new challenges to ensure localization precision and reliability, especially in NLOS environments. The maximum likelihood (ML) estimation is the most popular location estimator for its simplicity and efficiency, while it becomes extremely difficult to reliably identify the NLOS measurements when the redundant observations are not enough. In this study, we proposed an NLOS detection algorithm called misclosure check (MC) to overcome this issue, which intends to provide a more reliable location in the sparse anchor environment. The MC algorithm checks the misclosure of different triangles and then obtains the possible NLOS from these misclosures. By forming multiple misclosure conditions, the MC algorithm can identify NLOS measurements reliably, even in a sparse anchor environment. The performance of the MC algorithm is evaluated in a typical sparse anchor environment and the results indicate that the MC algorithm achieves promising NLOS identification capacity without abundant redundant measurements. The real data test also confirmed that the MC algorithm achieves better position precision than other three robust location estimators in an NLOS environment since it can correctly identify more NLOS measurements.

In this article, we propose a line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight time-of-arrival source localization algorithm that utilizes the weighted least squares. The proposed estimator combines multiple sorted measurements using the spatial sign concept, Mahalanobis distance, and Stahel–Donoho estimator, that is, assigning less weight to the samples as they are far from the center of inlier distribution. Also, the eigendecomposition Kendall’s [Formula: see text] covariance matrix is utilized as the scatter measure instead of the conventional median absolute deviation. Thus, the adverse effects by outliers can be attenuated effectively. To validate the superiority of the proposed methods, the root mean square error performances are compared with that of the existing algorithms via extensive simulation.

ABSTRACT Potential evidence for primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) is expected to lie in the largest scales mapped by cosmological surveys. Forthcoming 21 cm intensity mapping experiments will aim to probe these scales by surveying neutral hydrogen (H i) within galaxies. However, foreground signals dominate the 21 cm emission, meaning foreground cleaning is required to recover the cosmological signal. The effect this has is to damp the H i power spectrum on the largest scales, especially along the line of sight. Whilst there is agreement that this contamination is potentially problematic for probing PNG, it is yet to be fully explored and quantified. In this work, we carry out the first forecasts on fNL that incorporate simulated foreground maps that are removed using techniques employed in real data. Using an Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis on an SKA1-MID-like survey, we demonstrate that foreground cleaned data recovers biased values [$f_{\rm NL}= -102.1_{-7.96}^{+8.39}$ (68 per cent CL)] on our fNL = 0 fiducial input. Introducing a model with fixed parameters for the foreground contamination allows us to recover unbiased results ($f_{\rm NL}= -2.94_{-11.9}^{+11.4}$). However, it is not clear that we will have sufficient understanding of foreground contamination to allow for such rigid models. Treating the main parameter $k_\parallel ^\text{FG}$ in our foreground model as a nuisance parameter and marginalizing over it, still recovers unbiased results but at the expense of larger errors ($f_{\rm NL}= 0.75^{+40.2}_{-44.5}$), which can only be reduced by imposing the Planck 2018 prior. Our results show that significant progress on understanding and controlling foreground removal effects is necessary for studying PNG with H i intensity mapping.

This work addresses the problem of target localization in adverse non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments by using received signal strength (RSS) and time of arrival (TOA) measurements. It is inspired by a recently published work in which authors discuss about a critical distance below and above which employing combined RSS-TOA measurements is inferior to employing RSS-only and TOA-only measurements, respectively. Here, we revise state-of-the-art estimators for the considered target localization problem and study their performance against their counterparts that employ each individual measurement exclusively. It is shown that the hybrid approach is not the best one by default. Thus, we propose a simple heuristic approach to choose the best measurement for each link, and we show that it can enhance the performance of an estimator. The new approach implicitly relies on the concept of the critical distance, but does not assume certain link parameters as given. Our simulations corroborate with findings available in the literature for line-of-sight (LOS) to a certain extent, but they indicate that more work is required for NLOS environments. Moreover, they show that the heuristic approach works well, matching or even improving the performance of the best fixed choice in all considered scenarios.

In this paper, we propose a novel energy detection (ED) receiver architecture combined with time-of-arrival (TOA) estimation algorithm, compliant to the IEEE 802.15.4a standard. The architecture is based on double overlapping integrators and a sliding correlator. It exploits a series of ternary preamble sequences with perfect autocorrelation property. This property ensures coding gain, which allows an accurate estimation of power delay profile (PDP). To improve TOA estimation, the interpolation of PDP samples is proposed and the architecture is validated by using an ultra-wideband signals measurements platform. These measurements are carried out in line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight multipath environments. The experimental results show that the ranging performances obtained by the proposed architecture are higher than those obtained by the conventional architecture based on a single-integrator in both LOS and NLOS environments.

When there is non-line-of-sight (NLOS) path between the mobile station (MS) and base stations (BSs), it is possible to integrate many kinds of measurements to achieve more accurate measurements of the MS location. This paper proposed hybrid methods that utilize time of arrival (TOA) at five BSs and angle of arrival (AOA) information at the serving BS to determine the MS location in NLOS environments. The methods mitigate the NLOS effect simply by the weighted sum of the intersections between five TOA circles and the AOA line without requiring priori knowledge of NLOS error statistics. Simulation results show that the proposed methods always give superior performance than Taylor series algorithm (TSA) and the hybrid lines of position algorithm (HLOP).

Non-Line-Of-Sight conditions pose a major challenge to cellular radio positioning. Such conditions, when the direct Line-Of-Sight path is blocked, result in additional propagation delay for the signal, additional attenuation, and an angular bias. Therefore,many researchers have proposed various algorithms to mitigate the measured error caused by this phenomenon. This paper presentsthe procedure for improving accuracy of determining the mobile station location in cellular radio networks in Non-Line-of-Sightpropagation environment, based on the Time Of Arrival oriented estimator using the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. Incomputer science, Particle Swarm Optimization is an evolutionary computational method that optimizes a problem by iteratively tryingto improve a candidate solution with regard to a given measure of quality. The proposed algorithm uses the repeating Time-Of-Arrivaltest measurements using the four base stations and for simulation selects the measurement combination that give the smallest regionenclosed by the overlap of four circles. In this way, the smallest intersect area of the four Time-Of-Arrival circles is obtained, andtherefore the smallest positioning error. After that, we consider the complete problem as a combinatorial optimization problem withthe corresponding object function that represents the nonlinear relationship between the intersection of the four circles and the mobilestation location. The Particle Swarm Optimization finds the optimal solution of the object function and efficiently determines themobile station location. The simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms conventional algorithms such as theWeighted Least Squares and the Levenberq-Marquardt method.

In this paper, a localization scenario that the home base station (BS) measures time of arrival (TOA) and angle of arrival (AOA) while the neighboring BSs only measure TOA is investigated. In order to reduce the effect of non-line of sight (NLOS) propagation, the probability weighting localization algorithm based on NLOS identification is proposed. The proposed algorithm divides these range and angle measurements into different combinations. For each combination, a statistic whose distribution is chi-square in LOS propagation is constructed, and the corresponding theoretic threshold is derived to identify each combination whether it is LOS or NLOS propagation. Further, if those combinations are decided as LOS propagation, the corresponding probabilities are derived to weigh the accepted combinations. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm can provide better performance than conventional algorithms in different NLOS environments. In addition, computational complexity of our proposed algorithm is analyzed and compared.
