Offshore and inland river ship detection has been studied on both synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical remote sensing imagery. However, the classic ship detection methods based on SAR images can cause a high false alarm ratio and be influenced by the sea surface model, especially on inland rivers and in offshore areas. The classic detection methods based on optical images do not perform well on small and gathering ships. This paper adopts the idea of deep networks and presents a fast regional-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) method to detect ships from high-resolution remote sensing imagery. First, we choose GaoFen-2 optical remote sensing images with a resolution of 1 m and preprocess the images with a support vector machine (SVM) to divide the large detection area into small regions of interest (ROI) that may contain ships. Then, we apply ship detection algorithms based on a region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) on ROI images. To improve the detection result of small and gathering ships, we adopt an effective target detection framework, Faster-RCNN, and improve the structure of its original convolutional neural network (CNN), VGG16, by using multiresolution convolutional features and performing ROI pooling on a larger feature map in a region proposal network (RPN). Finally, we compare the most effective classic ship detection method, the deformable part model (DPM), another two widely used target detection frameworks, the single shot multibox detector (SSD) and YOLOv2, the original VGG16-based Faster-RCNN, and our improved Faster-RCNN. Experimental results show that our improved Faster-RCNN method achieves a higher recall and accuracy for small ships and gathering ships. Therefore, it provides a very effective method for offshore and inland river ship detection based on high-resolution remote sensing imagery.

The road network plays an important role in the modern traffic system; as development occurs, the road structure changes frequently. Owing to the advancements in the field of high-resolution remote sensing, and the success of semantic segmentation success using deep learning in computer version, extracting the road network from high-resolution remote sensing imagery is becoming increasingly popular, and has become a new tool to update the geospatial database. Considering that the training dataset of the deep convolutional neural network will be clipped to a fixed size, which lead to the roads run through each sample, and that different kinds of road types have different widths, this work provides a segmentation model that was designed based on densely connected convolutional networks (DenseNet) and introduces the local and global attention units. The aim of this work is to propose a novel road extraction method that can efficiently extract the road network from remote sensing imagery with local and global information. A dataset from Google Earth was used to validate the method, and experiments showed that the proposed deep convolutional neural network can extract the road network accurately and effectively. This method also achieves a harmonic mean of precision and recall higher than other machine learning and deep learning methods.

By detecting the defect location in high-resolution insulator images collected by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in various environments, the occurrence of power failure can be timely detected and the caused economic loss can be reduced. However, the accuracies of existing detection methods are greatly limited by the complex background interference and small target detection. To solve this problem, two deep learning methods based on Faster R-CNN (faster region-based convolutional neural network) are proposed in this paper, namely Exact R-CNN (exact region-based convolutional neural network) and CME-CNN (cascade the mask extraction and exact region-based convolutional neural network). Firstly, we proposed an Exact R-CNN based on a series of advanced techniques including FPN (feature pyramid network), cascade regression, and GIoU (generalized intersection over union). RoI Align (region of interest align) is introduced to replace RoI pooling (region of interest pooling) to address the misalignment problem, and the depthwise separable convolution and linear bottleneck are introduced to reduce the computational burden. Secondly, a new pipeline is innovatively proposed to improve the performance of insulator defect detection, namely CME-CNN. In our proposed CME-CNN, an insulator mask image is firstly generated to eliminate the complex background by using an encoder-decoder mask extraction network, and then the Exact R-CNN is used to detect the insulator defects. The experimental results show that our proposed method can effectively detect insulator defects, and its accuracy is better than the examined mainstream target detection algorithms.

High-resolution optical remote sensing data can be utilized to investigate the human behavior and the activities of artificial targets, for example ship detection on the sea. Recently, the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) in the field of deep learning is widely used in image processing, especially in target detection tasks. Therefore, a complete processing system called the broad area target search (BATS) is proposed based on DCNN in this paper, which contains data import, processing and storage steps. In this system, aiming at the problem of onshore false alarms, a method named as Mask-Faster R-CNN is proposed to differentiate the target and non-target areas by introducing a semantic segmentation sub network into the Faster R-CNN. In addition, we propose a DCNN framework named as Saliency-Faster R-CNN to deal with the problem of multi-scale ships detection, which solves the problem of missing detection caused by the inconsistency between large-scale targets and training samples. Based on these DCNN-based methods, the BATS system is tested to verify that our system can integrate different ship detection methods to effectively solve the problems that existed in the ship detection task. Furthermore, our system provides an interface for users, as a data-driven learning, to optimize the DCNN-based methods.

Road detection in very-high-resolution remote sensing imagery is a hot research topic. However, the high resolution results in highly complex data distributions, which lead to much noise for road detection—for example, shadows and occlusions caused by disturbance on the roadside make it difficult to accurately recognize road. In this article, a novel edge-reinforced convolutional neural network, combined with multiscale feature extraction and edge reinforcement, is proposed to alleviate this problem. First, multiscale feature extraction is used in the center part of the proposed network to extract multiscale context information. Then edge reinforcement, applying a simplified U-Net to learn additional edge information, is used to restore the road information. The two operations can be used with different convolutional neural networks. Finally, two public road data sets are adopted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, with experimental results demonstrating its superiority.
