Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is of great significance for the extraction and research of precise information of sea surface topography. Improving measurement accuracy is necessary for realizing spaceborne GNSS-R sea surface altimetry application. The main error source of GNSS-R distance measurement is the error of the specular reflection point positioning, which directly affects the sea surface altimetry accuracy on the reference datum. There is an elevation error of several tens of meters between the reflection reference surface used by the existing specular reflection point geometric positioning methods and the sea surface elevation, which is importantly influenced by the earth’s gravity field. Therefore, the gravity field reflection reference surface correction is the key to improving the specular reflection point positioning accuracy. In this study, based on the correction of the GNSS-R reflection reference surface, research on improving the positioning accuracy of the specular reflection point is carried out. Firstly, in order to reduce the positioning error caused by the elevation difference between the reflection reference surface and the sea surface, the gravity field reflection reference surface correction method (GFRRSCM) which corrects the reflection reference surface from the WGS-84 ellipsoid to geoid is proposed, and the positioning accuracy is improved by 25.15 m. Secondly, the normal projection reflection reference surface correction method (NPRRSCM) is proposed to correct the specular reflection point determined by the GFRRSCM from the reflection reference plane of the radial to that of the normal. Additionally, in the process of solving the spatial geometric relationship of the reflection path, the approximate substitution error is reduced by directly solving the normal projection on the plane, and the positioning accuracy is further improved by 13.05 m towards the normal. Thirdly, based on the gravity field normal projection reflection reference surface combination correction method (GF-NPRRSCCM), the specular reflection point positioning accuracy is synthetically improved by 28.66 m.

The positioning error of the specular reflection point is the main error source of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) satellite sea surface altimetry. The existing specular reflection point geometric positioning methods do not consider the static-state elevation difference of tens of meters and the decimeter-level time-varying elevation difference between the reflection reference surface and the instantaneous sea surface. The resulting positioning error restricts the GNSS-R satellite sea surface altimetry from reaching cm-level high accuracy on the reference datum. Under the premise of the basic static-state elevation positioning error correction, reducing the time-varying elevation positioning error is the key to improving positioning accuracy. In this study, based on the principle of elevation correction of GNSS-R reflection reference surface, the main parameter that determines the real-time variation of sea surface height, ocean tide, is used to correct the specular reflection point from geoid to ocean tidal surface. The positioning error caused by the time-varying elevation error of the reflection reference surface is reduced, the positioning accuracy is improved, and the improvement is quantified. According to the research results, the ocean tidal correction positioning (OTCP) method improves the positioning accuracy by 0.31 m. The positioning accuracy improvement has a good correlation with the corresponding tidal height modulo, and the improvement is 1.07 times of the tidal height modulo. In the offshore, the tidal height gradient modulo is greater than the deep sea, the gradient of the tidal positioning correction has a good response to the tidal height gradient modulo, while the sensitivity of this response decreases in the deep sea.

The timing group delay parameter (TGD) or differential code bias parameter (DCB) is an important factor that affects the performance of GNSS basic services; therefore, TGD and DCB must be taken seriously. Moreover, the TGD parameter is modulated in the navigation message, taking into account the impact of TGD on the performance of the basic service. International GNSS Monitoring and Assessment System (iGMAS) provides the broadcast ephemeris with TGD parameter and the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) provides DCB products. In this paper, the current available BDS-3 TGD and DCB parameters are firstly described in detail, and the relationship of TGD and DCB for BDS-3 is figured out. Then, correction models of BDS-3 TGD and DCB in standard point positioning (SPP) or precise point positioning (PPP) are given, which can be applied in various situations. For the effects of TGD and DCB in the SPP and PPP solution processes, all the signals from BDS-3 were researched, and the validity of TGD and DCB has been further verified. The experimental results show that the accuracy of B1I, B1C and B2a single-frequency SPP with TGD or DCB correction was improved by approximately 12–60%. TGD will not be considered for B3I single-frequency, because the broadcast satellite clock offset is based on the B3I as the reference signal. The positioning accuracy of B1I/B3I and B1C/B2a dual-frequency SPP showed that the improvement range for horizontal components is 60.2% to 74.4%, and the vertical components improved by about 50% after the modification of TGD and DCB. In addition, most of the uncorrected code biases are mostly absorbed into the receiver clock bias and other parameters for PPP, resulting in longer convergence time. The convergence time can be max increased by up to 50% when the DCB parameters are corrected. Consequently, the positioning accuracy can reach the centimeter level after convergence, but it is critical for PPP convergence time and receiver clock bias that the TGD and DCB correction be considered seriously.

Abstract Being the first mixed-constellation global navigation system, the global BeiDou navigation system (BDS-3) designs new signals, the service performance of which has attracted extensive attention. In the present study, the Signal-in-space range error (SISRE) computation method for different types of navigation satellites was presented. And the differential code bias (DCB) correction method for BDS-3 new signals was deduced. Based on these, analysis and evaluation were done by adopting the actual measured data after the official launching of BDS-3. The results showed that BDS-3 performed better than the regional navigation satellite system (BDS-2) in terms of SISRE. Specifically, the SISRE of the BDS-3 medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites reached 0.52 m, slightly inferior compared to 0.4 m from Galileo, marginally better than 0.57 m from GPS, and significantly better than 2.33 m from GLONASS. And the BDS-3 inclined geostationary orbit (IGSO) satellites achieved the SISRE of 0.90 m, on par with that of the QZSS IGSO satellites. However, the average SISRE of BDS-3 geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites was 1.15 m, which was marginally inferior to that of the QZSS GEO satellite (0.91m). In terms of positioning accuracy, the overall three-dimensional single-frequency standard point positioning (SPP) accuracy of BDS-3 B1C, B2a, B1I, and B3I gained an accuracy level better than 5 m. Moreover, the B1I signal exhibited the best positioning accuracy in the Asian-Pacific region, while the B1C signal set forth the best positioning accuracy in the other regions. Owing to the advantage in signal frequency, the dual-frequency SPP accuracy of B1C+B2a surpassed that of the transitional signal of B1I+B3I. Since there are more visible satellites in Asia-Pacific, the positioning accuracy of BDS-3 was moderately superior to that of GPS. The precise point positioning (PPP) accuracy of BDS-3 B1C+B2a or B1I+B3I converged to the order of centimeters, marginally inferior to that of the GPS L1+L2. However, these three combinations had a similar convergence time of approximately 30 minutes.

This paper presents a method for increasing the speed and the positioning accuracy of the positioning systems with mechanical position feedback. The method consists in using a position transducer for real time determination of the position of the load and correcting this position using an adequate algorithm. It is preferable not to modify the construction of the positioning unit, allowing the user to decide when to use this correction method according to the practical application. An interesting solution to this problem is to use an external space-position finding sensing system, as presented in the paper.

AbstractIn addition to Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation, the number of Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) satellites is increasing; it is now possible to evaluate and analyze the position accuracy with both the GPS and GLONASS constellation. In this article, statistical analysis of static precise point positioning (PPP) using GPS-only, GLONASS-only, and combined GPS/GLONASS modes is evaluated. Observational data of 10 whole days from 10 International GNSS Service (IGS) stations are used for analysis. Position accuracy in east, north, up components, and carrier phase/code residuals is analyzed. Multi-GNSS PPP open-source package is used for the PPP performance analysis. The analysis also provides the GNSS researchers the understanding of the observational data processing algorithm. Calculation statistics reveal that standard deviation (STD) of horizontal component is 3.83, 13.80, and 3.33 cm for GPS-only, GLONASS-only, and combined GPS/GLONASS PPP solutions, respectively. Combined GPS/GLONASS PPP achieves better positioning accuracy in horizontal and three-dimensional (3D) accuracy compared with GPS-only and GLONASS-only PPP solutions. The results of the calculation show that combined GPS/GLONASS PPP improves, on an average, horizontal accuracy by 12.11% and 60.33% and 3D positioning accuracy by 10.39% and 66.78% compared with GPS-only and GLONASS-only solutions, respectively. In addition, the results also demonstrate that GPS-only solutions show an improvement of 54.23% and 62.54% compared with GLONASS-only PPP mode in horizontal and 3D components, respectively. Moreover, residuals of GLONASS ionosphere-free code observations are larger than the GPS code residuals. However, phase residuals of GPS and GLONASS phase observations are of the same magnitude.

The article presents the results of simulations that take into account the optical parameters of the selected sea region (from literature data on the southern Baltic Sea) and two optically extreme types of crude oil (from historical data) which exist in the form of a highly watered-down oil-in-water emulsion (10 ppm). The spectral index was analyzed based on the results of modeling the radiance reflectance distribution for almost an entire hemisphere of the sky (zenith angle from 0 to 80°). The spectral index was selected and is universal for all optically different types of oil (wavelengths of 650 and 412 nm). The possibility of detecting pollution in the conditions of the wavy sea surface (as a result of wind of up to 10 m/s) was studied. It was also shown that if the viewing direction is close to a direction perpendicular to the sea surface, observations aimed at determining the spectral index are less effective than observations under the zenith angle of incidence of sunlight for all azimuths excluding the direction of sunlight’s specular reflection.

With the rapid development of multi-constellation Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs), satellite navigation is undergoing drastic changes. Presently, more than 70 satellites are already available and nearly 120 more satellites will be available in the coming years after the achievement of complete constellation for all four systems- GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou. The significant improvement in terms of satellite visibility, spatial geometry, dilution of precision and accuracy demands the utilization of combining multi-GNSS for Precise Point Positioning (PPP), especially in constrained environments. Currently, PPP is performed based on the processing of only GPS observations. Static and kinematic PPP solutions based on the processing of only GPS observations is limited by the satellite visibility, which is often insufficient for the mountainous and open pit mines areas. One of the easiest options available to enhance the positioning reliability is to integrate GPS and GLONASS observations. This research investigates the efficacy of combining GPS and GLONASS observations for achieving static PPP solution and its sensitivity to different processing methodology. Two static PPP solutions, namely standalone GPS and combined GPS-GLONASS solutions are compared. The datasets are processed using the open source GNSS processing environment <i>gLAB</i> 2.2.7 as well as <i>magicGNSS</i> software package. The results reveal that the addition of GLONASS observations improves the static positioning accuracy in comparison with the standalone GPS point positioning. Further, results show that there is an improvement in the three dimensional positioning accuracy. It is also shown that the addition of GLONASS constellation improves the total number of visible satellites by more than 60% which leads to the improvement of satellite geometry represented by Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP) by more than 30%.

A regional gravity field product, comprising vertical deflections and gravity anomalies, of the Gulf of Guinea (15°W to 5°E, 4°S to 4°N) has been developed from sea surface heights (SSH) of five altimetry missions. Though the remove-restore technique was adopted, the deflections of the vertical were computed directly from the SSH without the influence of a global geopotential model. The north-component of vertical deflections was more accurate than the east-component by almost three times. Analysis of results showed each satellite can contribute almost equally in resolving the north-component. This is attributable to the nearly northern inclinations of the various satellites. However, Cryosat-2, Jason-1/GM, and SARAL/AltiKa contributed the most in resolving the east-component. We attribute this to the superior spatial resolution of Cryosat-2, the lower inclination of Jason-1/GM, and the high range accuracy of the Ka-band of SARAL/AltiKa. Weights of 0.687 and 0.313 were, respectively, assigned to the north and east components in order to minimize their non-uniform accuracy effect on the resultant gravity anomaly model. Histogram of computed gravity anomalies compared well with those from renowned models: DTU13, SIOv28, and EGM2008. It averagely deviates from the reference models by −0.33 mGal. Further assessment was done by comparing it with a quadratically adjusted shipborne free-air gravity anomalies. After some data cleaning, observations in shallow waters, as well as some ship tracks were still unreliable. By excluding the observations in shallow waters, the derived gravity field model compares well in ocean depths deeper than 2,000 m.
