Deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSDs) endanger settlements and infrastructure in mountain areas all over the world. To prevent disastrous events, their activity needs to be continuously monitored. In this paper, the movement of the Reissenschuh DSGSD in the Schmirn valley (Tyrol, Austria) is quantified based on point clouds acquired with a Riegl VZ®-6000 long-range laser scanner in 2016 and 2017. Geomorphological features (e.g., block edges, terrain ridges, scarps) travelling on top of the landslide are extracted from the acquired point clouds using morphometric attributes based on locally computed eigenvectors and -values. The corresponding representations of the extracted features in the multi-temporal data are exploited to derive 3D displacement vectors based on a workflow exploiting the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm. The subsequent analysis reveals spatial patterns of landslide movement with mean displacements in the order of 0.62 ma − 1 , corresponding well with measurements at characteristic points using a differential global navigation satellite system (DGNSS). The results are also compared to those derived from a modified version of the well-known image correlation (IMCORR) method using shaded reliefs of the derived digital terrain models. The applied extended ICP algorithm outperforms the raster-based method particularly in areas with predominantly vertical movement.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Multi-temporal 3D point clouds acquired with a laser scanner can be efficiently used for an area-wide assessment of landslide-induced surface changes. In the present study, displacements of the Vögelsberg landslide (Tyrol, Austria) are assessed based on available data acquired with airborne laser scanning (ALS) in 2013 and data acquired with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a laser scanner (ULS) in 2018. Following the data pre-processing steps including registration and ground filtering, buildings are segmented and extracted from the datasets. The roofs, represented as multi-temporal 3D point clouds are then used to derive displacement vectors with a novel matching tool based on the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm. The resulting mean annual displacements are compared to the results of a geodetic monitoring based on an automatic tracking total station (ATTS) measuring 53 retroreflective prisms across the study area every hour since May 2016. In general, the results are in agreement concerning the mean annual magnitude (ATTS: 6.4&amp;thinsp;cm within 2.2 years, 2.9&amp;thinsp;cm a<sup>&amp;minus;1</sup>; laser scanning data: 13.2&amp;thinsp;cm within 5.4 years, 2.4&amp;thinsp;cm a<sup>&amp;minus;1</sup>) and direction of the derived displacements. The analysis of the laser scanning data proved suitable for deriving long-term landslide displacements and can provide additional information about the deformation of single roofs.</p>

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Slow moving deep-seated gravitational slope deformations are threatening infrastructure and economic wellbeing in mountainous areas. Accelerating landslides may end up in a catastrophic slope failure in terms of rapid rock avalanches. Continuous landslide monitoring enables the identification of critical acceleration thresholds, which are required in natural hazard management. Among many existing monitoring methods, laser scanning is a cost effective method providing 3D data for deriving three dimensional and areawide displacement vectors at certain morphological structures travelling on top of the landslide. Comparing displacements between selected observation periods allows the spatial interpretation of landslide acceleration or deceleration. This contribution presents five laser scanning datasets of the active Reissenschuh landslide (Tyrol, Austria) acquired by airborne laser scanning (ALS), terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and Unmanned aerial vehicle Laser Scanning (ULS) sensors. Three observation periods with acquisition dates between 2008 and 2018 are used to derive area-wide displacement vectors. To ensure a most suitable displacement derivation between ALS, TLS and ULS platforms, an analysis investigating point cloud features within varying search radii is carried out, in order to identify a neighbourhood where common surfaces are represented platform independent or differences between the platforms are minimized. Consequent displacement vector estimation is done by ICP-Matching using morphological structures within the high resolution TLS and ULS point cloud. Displacements from the lower resolution ALS point cloud and TLS point cloud were determined using a modified version of the well-known image correlation (IMCORR) method working with point cloud derived shaded relief images combined with digital terrain models (DTM). The interplatform compatible analyses of the multi-temporal laser scanning data allows to quantify the area-wide displacement patterns of the landslide. Furthermore, changes of these displacement patterns over time are assessed area-wide. Spatially varying areas of landslide acceleration and deceleration in the order of &amp;plusmn;15&amp;thinsp;cm&amp;thinsp;a<sup>&amp;minus;1</sup> between 2008 and 2017 and an area wide acceleration of up to 20&amp;thinsp;cm&amp;thinsp;a<sup>&amp;minus;1</sup> between 2016 and 2018 are identified. Continuing the existing time series with future ULS acquisitions may enable a more complete and detailed displacement monitoring using entirely represented objects within the point clouds.</p>

Deformation detection determines the quantified change of a scene’s geometric state, which is of great importance for the mitigation of hazards and property loss from earth observation. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) provides an efficient and flexible solution to rapidly capture high precision three-dimensional (3D) point clouds of hillside areas. Most existing methods apply multi-temporal TLS surveys to detect deformations depending on a variety of ground control points (GCPs). However, on the one hand, the deployment of various GCPs is time-consuming and labor-intensive, particularly for difficult terrain areas. On the other hand, in most cases, TLS stations do not form a closed loop, such that cumulative errors cannot be corrected effectively by the existing methods. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes a deformation detection method with limited GCPs based on a novel registration algorithm that accurately registers TLS stations to the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) dense image points. First, the proposed method extracts patch primitives from smoothed hillside points, and adjacent TLS scans are pairwise registered by comparing the geometric and topological information of or between patches. Second, a new multi-station adjustment algorithm is proposed, which makes full use of locally closed loops to reach the global optimal registration. Finally, digital elevation models (DEMs, a DEM is a numerical representation of the terrain surface, formed by height points to represent the topography), slope and aspect maps, and vertical sections are generated from multi-temporal TLS surveys to detect and analyze the deformations. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed deformation detection method obtains good performance for the hillside areas with limited (few) GCPs.

Terrestrial and airborne 3D imaging sensors are well-suited data acquisition systems for the area-wide monitoring of landslide activity. State-of-the-art surveying techniques, such as terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and photogrammetry based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery or terrestrial acquisitions have advantages and limitations associated with their individual measurement principles. In this study we present an integration approach for 3D point clouds derived from these techniques, aiming at improving the topographic representation of landslide features while enabling a more accurate assessment of landslide-induced changes. Four expert-based rules involving local morphometric features computed from eigenvectors, elevation and the agreement of the individual point clouds, are used to choose within voxels of selectable size which sensor’s data to keep. Based on the integrated point clouds, digital surface models and shaded reliefs are computed. Using an image correlation technique, displacement vectors are finally derived from the multi-temporal shaded reliefs. All results show comparable patterns of landslide movement rates and directions. However, depending on the applied integration rule, differences in spatial coverage and correlation strength emerge.

High Accuracy Driving Maps (HADMs) are the core component of Intelligent Drive Assistant Systems (IDAS), which can effectively reduce the traffic accidents due to human error and provide more comfortable driving experiences. Vehicle-based mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems provide an efficient solution to rapidly capture three-dimensional (3D) point clouds of road environments with high flexibility and precision. This paper proposes a novel method to extract road features (e.g., road surfaces, road boundaries, road markings, buildings, guardrails, street lamps, traffic signs, roadside-trees, power lines, vehicles and so on) for HADMs in highway environment. Quantitative evaluations show that the proposed algorithm attains an average precision and recall in terms of 90.6% and 91.2% in extracting road features. Results demonstrate the efficiencies and feasibilities of the proposed method for extraction of road features for HADMs.

The implementation of laser scanning in the field of archaeology provides us with an entirely new dimension in research and surveying. It allows us to digitally recreate individual objects, or entire cities, using millions of three-dimensional points grouped together in what is referred to as "point clouds". In addition, the visualization of the point cloud data, which can be used in the final report by archaeologists and architects, should usually be produced as a JPG or TIFF file. Not only the visualization of point cloud data, but also re-examination of older data and new survey of the construction of Roman building applying remote-sensing technology for precise and detailed measurements afford new information that may lead to revising drawings of ancient buildings which had been adduced as evidence without any consideration of a degree of accuracy, and finally can provide new research of ancient buildings. We used laser scanners at fields because of its speed, comprehensive coverage, accuracy and flexibility of data manipulation. Therefore, we “skipped” many of post-processing and focused on the images created from the meta-data simply aligned using a tool which extended automatic feature-matching algorithm and a popular renderer that can provide graphic results.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is providing exciting new ways to quantify tree and forest structure, particularly above-ground biomass (AGB). We show how TLS can address some of the key uncertainties and limitations of current approaches to estimating AGB based on empirical allometric scaling equations (ASEs) that underpin all large-scale estimates of AGB. TLS provides extremely detailed non-destructive measurements of tree form independent of tree size and shape. We show examples of three-dimensional (3D) TLS measurements from various tropical and temperate forests and describe how the resulting TLS point clouds can be used to produce quantitative 3D models of branch and trunk size, shape and distribution. These models can drastically improve estimates of AGB, provide new, improved large-scale ASEs, and deliver insights into a range of fundamental tree properties related to structure. Large quantities of detailed measurements of individual 3D tree structure also have the potential to open new and exciting avenues of research in areas where difficulties of measurement have until now prevented statistical approaches to detecting and understanding underlying patterns of scaling, form and function. We discuss these opportunities and some of the challenges that remain to be overcome to enable wider adoption of TLS methods.

&lt;p&gt;Survey-grade drone laser scanners suitable for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV-LS) allow the efficient collection of finely detailed three-dimensional information of tree structures. This data type allows forests to be resolved into discrete individual trees and has shown promising results in providing accurate in-situ observations of key forestry variables. New and improved approaches for analyzing UAV-LS point clouds have to be developed to transform the vast amounts of data from UAV-LS into actionable insights and decision support. Many different studies have explored various methods for automating single tree detection, segmentation, parsing into different tree components, and measurement of biophysical variables (e.g., diameter at breast height). Despite the considerable efforts dedicated to developing automated ways to process UAV-LS data into useful data, current methods tend to be tailored to small datasets, and it remains challenging to evaluate the performance of different algorithms based on a consistent validation dataset. To fill this knowledge gap and to further advance our ability to measure forests from UAV-LS data, we present a new benchmarking dataset. This data is composed of manually labelled UAV-LS data acquired a number of continents and biomes which span tropical to boreal forests. The UAV-LS data was collected exclusively used survey-grade sensors such as the Riegl VUX and mini-VUX series which are characterized by a point density in the range&amp;#160;1 &amp;#8211; 10 k points m&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt;. Currently, such data represent the state-of-the-art in aerial laser scanning data. The benchmark data consists of a library of single-tree point clouds, aggregated to sample plots, with each point classified as either stem, branch, or leaves. With the objective of releasing such a benchmark dataset as a public asset, in the future, researchers will be able to leverage such pre-existing labelled trees for developing new methods to measure forests from UAV-LS data. The availability of benchmarking datasets represents an important driver for enabling the development of robust and accurate methods. Such a benchmarking dataset will also be important for a consistent comparison of existing or future algorithms which will guide future method development.&lt;/p&gt;

Forests reduce snow accumulation on the ground through canopy interception and subsequent evaporative losses. To understand snow interception and associated hydrological processes, studies have typically relied on resource-intensive point scale measurements derived from weighed trees or indirect measurements that compared snow accumulation between forested sites and nearby clearings. Weighed trees are limited to small or medium-sized trees, and indirect comparisons can be confounded by wind redistribution of snow, branch unloading, and clearing size. A potential alternative method could use terrestrial lidar (light detection and ranging) because three-dimensional lidar point clouds can be generated for any size tree and can be utilized to calculate volume of the intercepted snow. The primary objective of this study was to provide a feasibility assessment for estimating snow interception volume with terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), providing information on challenges and opportunities for future research. During the winters of 2017 and 2018, intercepted snow masses were continuously measured for two model trees suspended from load-cells. Simultaneously, autonomous terrestrial lidar scanning (ATLS) was used to develop volumetric estimates of intercepted snow. Multiplying ATLS volume estimates by snow density estimates (derived from empirical models based on air temperature) enabled the comparison of predicted vs. measured snow mass. Results indicate agreement between predicted and measured values (R2 ≥ 0.69, RMSE ≥ 0.91 kg, slope ≥ 0.97, intercept ≥ −1.39) when multiplying TLS snow interception volume with a constant snow density estimate. These results suggest that TLS might be a viable alternative to traditional approaches for mapping snow interception, potentially useful for estimating snow loads on large trees, collecting data in difficult to access terrain, and calibrating snow interception models to new forest types around the globe.
