In discussing the arrival of Buddhism to China, Erik Zürcher describes the meeting of “a jungle of Buddhist metaphysics” with other local philosophies and practices. This period was a transformative encounter with wide-ranging ramifications, including for textual traditions. Non-complete Emptiness (Bu zhenkong lun 不真空論), written by Seng Zhao 僧肇, is one product of this encounter. While explaining the principle of emptiness, Non-complete Emptiness incorporates Daoist and Confucian terminologies and elements. Nevertheless, the text is considered formative for the development of Buddhist writing and practice during the critical period of Buddhism’s assimilation into China in the third to fifth centuries AD. This study of Non-complete Emptiness looks at the philosophical and cultural relevance of the text. It suggests a methodological solution to some of the tensions that have arisen from Seng Zhao’s notion of emptiness. The article begins by looking into the historical and hermeneutical tendencies in the scholarship of Non-complete Emptiness. The following section provides a textual and cultural analysis of the text and its author, viewing the sage as an “open entity”, to understand Seng Zhao’s idea of emptiness. This analysis suggests that a multiple dialectic approach should be followed to improve the understanding of the text’s Buddhist message and Seng Zhao’s position as a scholar-monk in medieval China.

Children (3––6 years old) and adults were trained for 6 weeks to identify a single tone, C5. Test sessions, held at the end of each week, had participants identify C5 within a set of seven alternative tones. By the third week of training, identification accuracy of children 5––6 years old surpassed the accuracies of children 3––4 years old and adults. Combined with an analysis of perceptual strategies, the data provide strong support for a critical period for absolute pitch acquisition. Received July 12, 2003, accepted August 1,2003

This chapter explores the relevance and adoption of spirituality in cybercrime; the roles of spiritualists; experiences of self-confessed youths that are involved in ‘yahoo yahoo’ activities and the future intentions of youths to engage in cybercrime. This was with a view to providing a socio-cultural analysis of the influence of spirituality in cybercrime (‘yahoo yahoo’) activities among Nigerian youths. Vignette based focus group discussions were held with male and female youths (18-35 years), in-depth interviews with ‘yahoo yahoo’ youths and some spiritualists. Findings showed that spirituality attracts high cultural relevance in life achievements and the conduct of cybercrimes. Perceptions on youths’ involvement in cybercrime activities attracted mixed reactions. To the ‘Yahoo yahoo’ youths, they are playing a game, to other participants; ‘yahoo yahoo’ was a criminal act. Cybercrime among the youths have received the support of some spiritualists within a political economy that creates an enabling environment for cybercrimes and related activities. A few participants indicated future interests in cybercrime if their economic conditions remain unchanged or worsen. In conclusion, we argued that a holistic approach grounded in the cultural system would be more effective in re-orientating and empowering the youths to positively utilizes their internet skills. Thus, curbing cybercrimes would require a process that would not rely exclusively on legal and policing frameworks.

The Ultimatum Game is commonly interpreted as a two-person bargaining game. The third person who donates and may withdraw the money is not included in the theoretical equations, but treated like a neutral measurement instrument. Yet in a cross-cultural analysis it seems necessary to consider the possibility that the thoughts of a player – strategic, altruistic, selfish, or concerned about reputation – are influenced by both an anonymous second player and the non-anonymous experimenter.

With high optimism, the third generation mobile communication technologies were launched and adopted by telecommunication giants in different parts of the globe—Hutchison 3G in the UK, Verizon in the USA and NTT DoCoMo in Japan. However, with an uncertain and turbulent social, economic and political environment, and the downturn in the global economy, difficult conditions are pronounced for the initial promises of m-commerce technologies to be fully realized. The causes for this, determined so far, have been largely of a technical nature. In this chapter, we shift the focus of analysis from a pure technical approach to a socio-cultural one. The basic premise of the chapter is that cultural variations do play a very important part in shaping potential consumers’ choice, belief and attitude about m-commerce services. We believe that to be an important way for the m-commerce industry to fulfill its potential.

This book provides scholars with a comprehensive collection of core references extracted from Jewish, Christian, and Muslim literature to a plethora of ancient writings associated with the name of the biblical character Enoch (Gen 5:214). It assembles citations of and references to writings attributed to Enoch in non-canonical Jewish, Christian, and Muslim literary sources (ranging in age from roughly the third century BCE up through the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries CE) into one convenient thematically arranged repository, and it classifies, compares, and briefly analyzes these references and citations to develop a clearer picture of the scope and range of what one might term “the Enochic library,” or the entire corpus of works attributed to Enoch and his subsequent cross-cultural avatars. The book consists of two parts. The present volume, Volume 1, is devoted to textual traditions about the narratological career of the character Enoch. It collects materials about the distinctive epithets frequently paired with his name, outlines his cultural achievements, articulates his societal roles, describes his interactions with the celestial world, assembles the varied traditions about his eventual fate, and surveys the various identities he is assigned outside the purely biblical world of discourse within other discursive networks and intellectual circles. It also assembles a range of testimonies which express how writings associated with Enoch were evaluated by Jewish, Christian, and Muslim writers during late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Volume 2, currently in preparation, will concentrate upon textual sources which arguably display a knowledge of the peculiar contents, motifs, and themes of extant Enochic literature, including but not limited to 1 Enoch (the Ethiopic Book of Enoch) and 2 Enoch (the Slavonic Book of Enoch).

The cerebellum plays a critical regulatory role in motor coordination, cognition, behavior, language, memory, and learning, hence overseeing a multiplicity of functions. Cerebellar development begins during early embryonic development, lasting until the first postnatal years. Particularly, the greatest increase of its volume occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy, which represents a critical period for cerebellar maturation. Preterm birth and all the related prenatal and perinatal contingencies may determine both dysmaturative and lesional events, potentially involving the developing cerebellum, and contributing to the constellation of the neuropsychiatric outcomes with several implications in setting-up clinical follow-up and early intervention.

Subject of our research is dental examination and identification of the features of the dental status in women with pregnancy complicated by gestosis. There is no doubt that pregnancy is a critical period for woman’s dental health. Objectives. Determine the dental status in women with pregnancy complicated by gestosis. Methods. As part of the study of the dental status of women with pregnancy complicated by gestosis, we conducted a clinical examination of the oral cavity in 127 women. The depth of the vestibule, the level of attachment of the bridles, the state of the bite, the indices of the KPU, IK, PMA, IZN were determined. Results. Our data indicate that the complication of the course of the third trimester of pregnancy with gestosis in women is accompanied by a deterioration in periodontal status, oral hygiene, and a 100% prevalence of gingivitis. Conclusions. The results of the study made it possible to obtain clinical and dental data characterizing the effect of pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia in women in the third trimester on the course of gingivitis, which is the basis for the development of methods for optimizing and increasing the effectiveness of therapeutic and prophylactic measures in this group of patients.

This chapter argues that the charismatic period of law and literature scholarship and the days when some turned to literature as a template for legal thinking are long gone. It identifies three possible futures for law and literature. One would see the field emphasizing its distinctiveness and resisting incorporation into broader interdisciplinary explorations of law. The second would see the field embedded in broader analysis of the relationship of law and cultural production. The third involves pushing the boundaries of law and literary study beyond the humanities and culture. This law as performance perspective brings literary and cultural analysis together with social studies of the way law performs in a variety of domains. The chapter concludes that the brightest future for the field is one in which the distinctiveness of law and literature scholarship fades so that its contribution to broader understandings of law can be enhanced.
