In contrast to other secularized countries, religious and spiritual needs and/or aspects of patient-centred-care are hardly studied in South Korea, even less in the context of psychiatry and psychotherapies. This study investigates religious and spiritual values of Korean psychiatric staff, and their experiences as well as considerations regarding their patients’ religious and spiritual aspects in clinical settings. In 2015, we surveyed psychiatric staff in Daegu and suburban areas using Korean versions of the Duke Religion Index and a questionnaire on Religion and Spirituality in Medicine: Physicians’ Perspectives by F. Curlin. Six clinics participated in our research. A total of 328 questionnaires were distributed. Ultimately, 270 fully completed questionnaires were analysed (return rate: 82.3%). Regarding religious and spiritual values, Korean psychiatric staff does not differ considerably from the average of the Korean population. However, there are significant moderate correlations between their own religious and spiritual attitudes, and their consideration as well as behaviors related to religious and spiritual aspects of their patients. In addition, there is evidence of an unconscious bias which influences treatment. These results call for more professional attention and self-reflective training.

SummaryThe extent to which religion and spirituality are integrated into routine psychiatric practice has been a source of increasing controversy over recent years. While taking a patient's spiritual needs into account when planning their care may be less contentious, disclosure to the patient by the psychiatrist of their own religious beliefs or consulting clergy in the context of treatment are seen by some as potentially harmful and in breach of General Medical Council guidance. Here, Professor Rob Poole and Professor Christopher Cook debate whether praying with a patient constitutes a breach of professional boundaries in psychiatric practice.

AbstractThe type species of the genus Butlerius, viz., B. butleri Goodey, 1929, is redescribed and illustrated from specimens collected in South Korea. Additional information is provided for the cuticle, stoma structure, female reproductive system and the male caudal region. The Korean population is 1336-1857 μm long, a = 33.9-43.5, b = 5.41-6.34, c = 3.38-4.20, c′ = 14.13-19.0 and V = 40-45%. Males have spicules 39-49 μm long and a gubernaculum 25-33 μm long. There are nine pairs of genital papillae, three pairs precloacal and six pairs postcloacal. The v5,6,7 clusters are widely separated, one group situated just posterior to the phasmids and the other group at level of pd. Although there are some differences in morphometrics as compared with the type population, the species is easily identified by the similarities in the structure of the stoma, pharynx, spicules and gubernaculum. Butlerius singularis and B. filicaudatus are proposed as synonyms of the type species.

AbstractSince the publication of Bergin’s classic 1980 paper “Psychotherapy and Religious Values” in the Journal of Clinical and Consulting Psychology, an enormous amount of quality research has been conducted on the integration of religious and spiritual values and perspectives into the psychotherapy endeavor. Numerous empirical studies, chapters, books, blogs, and specialty organizations have emerged in the past 35 years that have helped researchers and clinicians alike come to appreciate the value of religion and spirituality in the psychotherapeutic process. While so much has been accomplished in this area of integration, so much more needs to occur in order for the psychotherapeutic world to benefit from the wisdom of the great religious and spiritual traditions and values. While state-of-the-art quality research has and continues to demonstrate how religious and spiritual practices and values can be used effectively to enhance the benefits of behavioral and psychological interventions, too often the field either gets overly focused on particular and perhaps trendy areas of interest (e.g., mindfulness) or fails to appreciate and incorporate the research evidence supporting (or not supporting) the use of certain religiously or spiritually informed assessments and interventions. The purpose of this article is to reflect on where the field integrating religion, spirituality and psychotherapy has evolved through the present and where it still needs to go in the future. In doing so I hope to reflect on the call for integration that Bergin highlights in his classic 1980 paper.

The contemporary world is endowed with increasingly diverse spiritual and cultural perspectives, yet little is known about the spiritual concerns and spiritual resilience of Māori from Aotearoa New Zealand at the end of life. A context is provided for the value of spiritual assessment and identification of spiritual needs or concerns. Spiritual concerns and the desire to attain a state of ka ea (fulfillment, gratitude, or peace) may point to interventions, helping activities, or referrals that guide treatment. We reflect on qualitative findings from the 2017–2020 Pae Herenga study of 61 caregiving families, their helping professionals, and religious/spiritual leaders. We explore essential spiritual values and practices that support kaumātua (older tribal people) who have a life-limiting illness in achieving a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment at the end of life. Three themes emerged: the relational is spiritual, the need to live into the future, and value of spiritual end-of-life care. While some scholars have lamented the lack of culturally appropriate rapid assessment instruments, we suggest that a more open-ended assessment guide is better suited to understand key elements of spiritual diversity and spiritual concerns, particularly the spiritual strengths and resources that lead to well-being and even thriving at life’s end. Finally, learning about spiritual diversity can assist others to reconnect to lost meanings and regain a more holistic and centred view of life.

Sewol names both the senseless mass drowning of schoolchildren in a 2014 ferry disaster off the southwest coast of South Korea and its abiding affective impact on the South Korean population and diaspora. Anchoring itself in the tide of emotion washing from the broadcasted images of Pangmok Harbor where families and friends wept and awaited news of lost loved ones, but also reactivating the image from Psalm 137 of earlier weeping by another body of water (“By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion…”), this essay explores the affective possibilities of water as an elemental archive or repository of emotion beyond the constricting confines of the national. The essay also argues that a generalized concept of affect will not suffice to do justice to Sewol. A Korean tragedy evokes a Korean affect, and that affect the essay locates in the Korean concept of Han.

This article examines the impact religion and spirituality have on the quality of life for adult oncology patients. A diagnosis of cancer can be shocking news for many patients. Many people who have a cancer diagnosis believe that they have impending death with no hope for recovery. For some, religion and spirituality can be essential resources that assist cancer patients to cope with this diagnosis. Some sources of religion and spirituality include faith, hope, and meaning of life for an individual. Research findings support that a religious and spiritual perspective decreases depression, lowers anxiety, and promotes adherence to the treatment of cancer [1]. Findings from 18 qualitative and quantitative articles were analyzed to gather an understanding on the impact of spirituality and religion on the quality of life for oncology patients. These articles suggest that inclusion of religious and spiritual needs of oncology patients can significantly increase the quality of life for oncology patients.

Objective The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of major psychiatric disorders among North Korean defectors (NKD) settled in South Korea.Methods The study population consisted of 294 North Korean defectors, aged 18 to 64 years settled in South Korea for 3 years or less. Between June 1, 2016 and October 31, 2016, face-to-face interviews were conducted using the North Korean version of the WHO-Composite International Diagnostic Interview (NK-CIDI) to diagnose DSM-IV psychiatric disorders.Results The lifetime prevalence of any DSM-IV psychiatric disorders was 62.2% in NKD and 25.0% in the general Korean population. The prevalence of specific disorders in NKD and general Korean population was as follows: 22.3% and 4.9% for major depressive disorder (MDD), 12.2% and 1.4% for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 18.0% and 4.8% for nicotine dependence, and 14.5% and 11.2% for alcohol abuse. The incidence of every single psychiatric disorder varied in each country. For instance, the generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, and alcohol use disorder occurred more frequently in North Korea whereas PTSD was more prevalent in other countries.Conclusion The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among NKD was quite higher than in the general population of South Korea.

Acinetobacter species are widely distributed in the environment and clinical settings worldwide. We report the 2.99-Mbp draft genome sequence of Acinetobacter towneri strain DSM 16313, which was isolated from seawater in South Korea and proposed as a type strain of Acinetobacter seohaensis . Genome comparisons demonstrated that A. seohaensis should be reclassified as A. towneri .

The Intensive Care Unit is an area of the hospital that can elicit high levels of emotional and spiritual distress due to high mortality and prognostic uncertainty. Religion and spirituality are often manifest through prayer, rituals, and ceremonies, which can unite the patient and family with the care team. However, miracle language and other religious or spiritual topics that misalign with the expectations of the medical team can also lead to discord. The acute nature of ICU care poses challenges in creating a therapeutic alliance necessary to effectively address the religious and spiritual needs of patients and families. In this chapter, we provide a practical approach to provide high quality spiritual care in the ICU.
