The development of transversal ethical competences is one of the aspects on which the efforts of the teaching innovation group “Ethics of University Teaching Staff” are focused. In this sense, the studies that have been carried out to date focus their interest on the results achieved among the students, being limited those that have been developed on the teacher. In an attempt to deepen this line of research, we present this work on the analysis of the motivations and professional commitment of university professors. The analysis resulting from this report will allow us to have a first approach to this vision from a different point to the one we had previously addressed in other works. In this way we can complete other investigations about this same profile carried out previously with students.

Abstract Teacher training constitutes a structural determinant of the progress of countries and of people's opportunities. In turn, the quality of the university academic body is a fundamental element that explains the training processes. In this context, the objective of the research is to analyze the relevance of university teaching staff, specifically, in the processes of initial teacher training. The research is qualitative and descriptive in nature that, through an interview with 20 key actors, uses grounded theory and axial analysis for an in-depth study of the underlying relationships between the dimensions under evaluation. The results show that the quality of university professors is of the utmost importance, as students have disadvantages in their preparation of origin and, even more so, when educators have the responsibility of the integral preparation of their students and are the model on which is projected the performance of future teachers. It is concluded that the quality of the academic body constitutes an essential element in the intellectual, professional and value preparation of those who will act as future teachers, since the former are the main reference that students have in their training process.

Because professions are constantly changing and adapting, a permanent adjustment of the skills needed by professionals at any given moment is required. Universities today must take on an active role that will enable such adjustments. University teaching staff must therefore have a broad knowledge of the reality of the profession and incorporate its needs into their own dynamics. In this study we propose an approximation to the Labor Relations profession today – currently a discipline in the field of  Labor Sciences – as the context of study, highlight the role Universities must take on today as one of their constituent elements, and stress the importance of teaching-innovation processes aimed at improving the profession. We present a teaching-innovation experience developed by INVESLAB (Research and Innovation in Labor Sciences research group of the University of Valencia) that has led to the creation of the Interuniversity Network for Teaching Innovation in Labor Sciences. This Network has gone beyond the teaching imparted at just one university by incorporating lecturers from throughout Spain (the network currently comprises 53 lecturers from 16 universities) and seeks collaboration with professional entities.

The use of active methodologies in the university is a priority to achieve higher quality learning. One of these methodologies with the greatest potential for training in competencies is Project-Oriented Learning (PLA), using it in an innovative way. Associating the use of this methodology with the objectives of sustainable development, which have become even more important since the Pandemic by COVID-19, can be a good idea to achieve a more sustained and situated learning. The aim of this study is to find out to what extent research on teaching innovation with Project-Oriented Learning is associated with the Sustainable Development Goals. A systematic review was carried out as indicated by PRISMA through the following databases: WOS and Scopus. WOS found 15 articles on AoP and 6 on Project-Oriented Learning and sustainability. In Scopus 2 were found in 2019. The main results show that in the University, especially in the branches of engineering, AoP is widely used, however, it is rarely related to SDGs. Among the conclusions, we highlight the need for research on project-oriented learning and sustainable development goals.

This study aims to show the importance of evaluating the teaching performance level of the University teaching members. It also aims to provide the suggested mechanisms for evaluating the teaching performance of the teaching staff members of Sebha University. This study was based mainly on documents and analytic description to collect information about the importance and ways of evaluating teachers with reference to some of the international experiences on teaching performance development. This study concluded that the absence of an experienced entity that would develop the teaching performance of faculty members is one of the main reasons for the weak teaching performance at Sebha University. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that there should be a planned system based on measured standards and criteria for evaluating staff members to improve the quality of teaching in the higher education domain.

The article discusses the potential opportunities for leaders of higher education to monitor and implement development management functions using a system of key performance indicators, which is often used by various business entities. The authors adapted it to the needs of higher education institutions, integrating them with their characteristics. The formation of a system of key performance indicators in the article is disclosed from the point of view of improving the management system and motivation of the management and teaching staff of higher education. Approbation of the proposed methodology was implemented in the Institution of Higher Education, where it showed its effectiveness. The new system allowed the university professors to influence directly on the bonus part of income through their own work and efficiency.

This work aims at illustrating to illustrate the design and the first results of a survey which involved 1849 university professors who were teaching courses at Bachelor's and Master's Degrees of University of Padova during the academic year 2012/13. The research is part of a project of improvement of the academic educational innovation and the quality of academic teaching. The kind of approach is an evaluative research which was conducted within the academic organization and carried out among peers, using a quali-quantitative mixed method. The data was directly obtained using a CAWI questionnaire which was distributed to the whole teaching staff, and it was linked to administrative data related to the educational offer and students' evaluation of teaching in the same academic year. After a preliminary analysis of the factors which affected the probability of answering to the questionnaire, the results were summarized using some indicators which showed the diffusion of good practices of teaching, support needs, beliefs, interest and availability of the respondents to discuss more extensively the questions of the survey. The results are presented considering as reference context of teaching action and learning activities the eight Schools into which the degree courses are organized. Lastly, we identified sub-groups of potential participants for the qualitative phase of the research: they were characterized by different levels of professional practice and interest in innovating university teaching and they will be the right subjects to involve in different and integrated activities directed to develop teachers' professional competences.

This chapter shows how virtual and physical learning spaces are shaped by pedagogy. It explores the shift in pedagogy from an orientation to teaching to an emphasis on student learning. In so doing, it touches on Net Generation literature indicating that this concept has a poor fit with the diverse nature of student populations engaged in lifelong learning. The argument is that the skill set required for lifelong learning is not age related. At the core of the chapter is a case study of the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) which describes a history of learning environments that have been variously shaped by pedagogy and the limits of technology. It refers to the concept of the ‘edgeless university’, which acknowledges that learning is no longer cloistered within campus walls, and it describes how USQ is engaging with this concept through the development of open source learning materials. An important point in the chapter is that the deliberate design of quality learning spaces requires whole-of-institution planning, including academic development for university teaching staff, themselves often ill-equipped to take advantage of the potential of new learning environments. The import of the discussion is that higher education learning spaces are shaped by deliberate design, and that student learning is optimised when that design is pedagogically informed and properly managed.
