The mining industry plays a significant role in economic growth and development. Coal is a viable renewable energy source with 185.175 billion deposits in Thar, which has not been deeply explored. Although coal is an energy source and contributes to economic development, it puts pressure on environmental sustainability. The current study investigates Sindh Engro coal mining’s impact on environmental sustainability and human needs and interest. The Folchi and Phillips Environmental Sustainability Mathematics models are employed to measure environmental sustainability. The research findings demonstrated that Sindh Engro coal mining is potentially unsustainable for the environment. The toxic gases (methane, carbon dioxide, sulfur, etc.) are released during operational activities. The four significant environment spheres (atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere) are negatively influenced by Thar coal mining. The second part of the analysis results shows that human needs and interests have a positive and significant relationship except for human health and safety with Sindh Engro coal mining. Environmental pollution can be controlled by utilizing environmentally friendly coal mining operations and technologies. Plantation and ecological normalization can protect the species, flora, and fauna of the Thar Desert. The government of Pakistan and the provincial government of Sind should strictly check the adaptation of environmental standards. Furthermore, the researchers should explore the environmental issues and solutions so that coal mining becomes a cost-efficient and environmental-friendly energy source in Pakistan.

Mining Industry is often tagged as a polluting sector since it involves since it involves extensive resource exploitation by unsustainable methods. The techniques involved in mining cause tremendous destruction to the environment and health of people living in nearby areas. There is a growing consensus on sustainable and efficient mineral development which will avoid the clash between economic and environmental interests. Deployment of advanced and sustainable technological solutions in the entire mining process, fixing the gaps in its regulatory mechanisms and learning from the successes of specific domestic and international mining operations are certain solutions that have the capacity this sector more productive. The paper provides insights into the problems of mining sector and possible solutions to overcome these problems. It also provides examples of certain best practices adopted by mining corporations for sustainable coal mining. The paper also explores various methods and technologies which can be adopted by Thermal Power Plants to reduce their emissions and simultaneously conserve environment. An empirical study of Dahanu Thermal Power Station located in state of Maharashtra of India has been undertaken for this purpose to study the modern technologies adopted by them to lower their emission levels.

The association between economic complexity (sophisticated economic structure) and carbon emissions has major implications for environmental sustainability. In addition, globalization can be an important tool for attaining environmental sustainability and it may also moderate the association between economic complexity and carbon emissions. Thus, this research examines the effects of economic complexity, economic growth, renewable energy, and globalization on CO2 emissions in the top 10 energy transition economies where renewable energy and globalization have greatly increased over the last 3 decades. Furthermore, this study also evaluates the joint effect of globalization and economic complexity on carbon emissions. Keeping in view the presence of slope heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence in the data, this research utilized second-generation unit root tests (CIPS and CADF), Westerlund cointegration approach, and CS-ARDL and CCEMG long-run estimators over the period of 1990–2018. The results affirmed the presence of cointegration among the considered variable. Long-run findings revealed that globalization, renewable energy, and economic complexity decrease carbon emissions. Conversely, economic growth increases carbon emissions. Moreover, the joint impact of economic complexity and globalization stimulates environmental sustainability. Based on these findings, the government of these groups of economies should continue to expand the usage of renewable energy. They should also promote interaction with the rest of the world by adopting the policy of opening up.


Subject Outlook for the mining sector. Significance Encouraged by this year’s price increases for most of Peru’s mineral exports, the government is seeking to push ahead with plans to attract much-needed foreign investment into the mining industry. This will involve politically contentious moves to deregulate some of the cumbersome procedures that affect investors. Impacts Next year’s growth target of 4% is probably over-optimistic. Social and environmental protests will add to the costs of mining investment in Peru. Once opposition has emerged to projects, it will prove difficult to reverse. Climate change will accentuate problems of water shortage for mining operations.

Despite the increasing reliance on alternative and renewable energy sources in recent years, coal is set to continue being the most vital element of the global energy sector. The world coal supply (1,070 billion tons) shall last for 130 years with the current mining levels. In contrast to some large countries (such as the USA and Germany) reducing their coal production and consumption, Russia plans to increase the coal production levels as part of its strategy regarding the future of the coal mining industry. The annual volume of coal output is more than 440 million tons, 1/3 of which is extracted underground. The current and projected levels of underground coal mining present a set of issues pertaining to elevated dust concentration in the air and increased dust dispersion. High dust concentration in the air leads to damage to the skin, mucous membranes and respiratory organs of workers. Also, with high dust content, visibility in the longwalls decreases, the risk of injury and accidents increases. The present article deals with the formation of detrimental dust conditions that happen in the course of cleaning and preparatory mining operations in coal mines. The article reviews the international practices on dust reduction in coal mining operations and provides an overview of studies on dustiness levels and airborne dust composition in longwall faces of coal mines. It also presents mathematical models dealing with projections on dust composition, including projections on most hazardous dust particles the size of 0.1-10 and 0.1-35 μm. The article also presents a newly developed wetting method showing increased effectiveness.

The environmental and resource constraints on economic growth are increasingly evident. China urgently needs to reshape its economic growth momentum. The increase in green total factor productivity is particularly necessary for the growth of the quantity and quality of the economy. This paper selects the provincial panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2001 to 2015, and establishes a panel exchangeable errors model to analyze the impact of eight indicators on green total factor productivity (GTFP) and verifies its effectiveness. Empirical analysis shows that inter-provincial government competition, environmental regulation, energy consumption, and capital stock have a significant impact on green total factor productivity. The influence of foreign direct investment, industrial structure, and industrialization level on the total factor productivity of green is not significant. Therefore, the government should adopt suitable, flexible and diverse environmental regulation policies, promote energy-saving emission reduction and technology innovations through policies such as taxes and subsidies, strengthen the linkage mechanism between industrial structure upgrading and energy efficiency, to increase green total factor productivity.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a critical role in supporting national economic growth. The MSME sector has been particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted supply and demand as well as supply chains, causing the economy's wheels to grind to a halt at the MSME level. MSMEs must be supported by the government and other stakeholders in order to grow and develop. The goal of empowering MSMEs is to achieve a balanced, developing, and equitable national economic structure, as well as to boost regional development, job creation, income distribution, economic growth, and poverty alleviation. The East Java Provincial Government has developed a policy as a strategy for empowering MSMEs in East Java, so that MSMEs are not disrupted in their development process during the pandemic.Keywords : strategy, MSME empowerment, pandemic

In order to objectively analyze Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) contribution to Guinea’s mining sector, the granger casualty test was used to determine the relationship among variables and to determine whether any of these variables affect others and how. The variables used are Gross Domestic Product, Government Income, Trade, FDI inflow into Guinea mining sector and the exchange rate. The granger casualty test produced evidence of a bidirectional casualty relationship which suggests that FDI’s influence on efficiency lies in the government relaxing its dependency on the mining industry for economic  growth.

AbstractMining operations in the Global South often worsen conditions for affected communities after the conclusion of the operations as compared to pre-mining conditions. This is regression, not progress, which is contrary to the narrative surrounding mining’s promise of economic growth. While mining certainly brings profit, this profit does not result in social and economic development of affected communities and people living in poverty. This is the ‘myth of mining’ and the objective of this article is to expose this myth, identify its failings and propose a notion of ‘equitable mining’ that could ensure a pro-poor mining industry.

Coal mining activities may cause a series of environmental and socio-economic issues in communities around the mining area. Mining can become an obstacle to environmental sustainability and a major hidden danger to the security of the local ecology. Therefore, the coal mining industry should follow some specific principles and factors in achieving sustainable development. These factors include geological conditions, land use, mining technology, environmental sustainability policies and government regulations, socio-economic factors, as well as sustainability optimization for post-mining land use. Resources of the remains of the coal which is defined as the last remaining condition of the resources and reserves of coal when the coal companies have already completed the life of the mine or the expiration of the licensing contract (in accordance with government permission). This research uses approch of knowledge-driven GIS based methods mainly Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy logic for utilizing coal remaining resources and post-mining land use planning. The mining area selected for this study belongs to a PKP2B (Work Agreement for Coal Mining) company named Adaro Indonesia (PT Adaro). The result shows that geologically the existing formation is dominated by Coal Bearing Formation (Warukin Formation) which allows the presence of remains coal resource potential after the lifetime of mine, and the suitability of rubber plantation for the optimization of land use in all mining sites and also in some disposal places in conservation areas and protected forests.

Kraljic matrix (or Kraljic model) is a method used to segment the purchases or suppliers of a company by dividing them into four quadrants, based on the complexity (or risk) of the supply market (such as monopoly situations, barriers to entry, technological innovation) and the importance of the purchases or suppliers (determined by the impact that they have on the profitability of the company). This quandrant allows the company to define the optimal purchasing strategies for each of the four types of purchases or suppliers. In coal mining company, hundred thousand goods, part number or SKUs are purchased by corporate in fulfilling its mining operations requirement. However, the commodities generally purchased by open pit coal mining company are classified into 6 (six) classes which are fuel, maintenance of mobile equipment, blasting material, tyre, lubricants, and others. With the complexity of dealing with suppliers, it is mandatory for developing purchasing strategies as part of managing of supply chain. Mining operations and profitability of coal mining company shall depend on the total cost of ownership in purchasing the abovementioned commodities. This Kraljic Portfolio Model (1983) will assist coal mining company in applying purchasing strategies based on the class or quadrant which has been developed. Objective of this research is to develop purchasing strategies by empirically quantifying using data from a comprehensive survey among purchasing professionals in coal mining industry. Kraljic Portfolio Matrix is developed with 2 (two) stages of questioner. First questioner is to assess the importance level of each attribute in the dimension of purchasing activity by using Analytical Hierarchy Process. Second questioner is to assess every commodity’s scoring against each supply attribute. Subsequently, the matrix is developed by using SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) software. This research successfully classifies purchasing commodity in the appropriate quadrant of Kraljic Portfolio Matrix. By classifying the commodities purchased by coal mining company in the right quadrant of Kraljic Portfolio Matrix, the company will be able to implement the right purchasing strategies which will be different in one quadrant and another.
