Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L.) is a traditional medicinal and edible herb, whose health-promoting benefits have been attributed to its phenolic constituents. In this study, the effects of enzymatic hydrolysis on total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant (2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)) and antibacterial activities of raw and roasted (200 °C, 10–20 min) butterfly pea seeds were investigated. Roasting reduced the yield of seed aqueous extracts, but it increased the TPC and FRAP values, hence the reducing ability, of the extracts. Bromelain hydrolysis enhanced the TPC and TFC of the roasted seeds up to 2- and 18-fold higher, respectively. Trypsin hydrolysis drastically increased the TPC, but not TFC, of roasted seeds; trypsin-hydrolyzed, 20 min roasted sample had the highest TPC (54.07 μg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/mg) among all samples. Bromelain hydrolysis significantly improved the antioxidant activity of the roasted seed samples, where the antioxidant activity of bromelain-hydrolyzed, 20 min roasted sample was about 50% greater than the non-hydrolyzed 20 min roasted sample. Trypsin hydrolysis raised the FRAP values of the 20 min roasted sample to 70.28 mg Fe(II) equivalent/g, the highest among all samples. Nevertheless, trypsin only weakly elevated the ABTS scavenging activity of the roasted samples, showing no enhancement of the DPPH scavenging activity. On the other hand, only bromelain hydrolysates of raw and 10 min roasted seeds were active against Staphylococcus aureus. Taken together, bromelain hydrolysis can be used to enhance the extractable phytochemical contents and antioxidant activity of roasted butterfly pea seeds.

The methanolic extract of Artemisia incisa Pamp. was dissolved in distilled water and successively partitioned with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. The antioxidant potential of all these fractions and remaining aqueous fraction was evaluated by four methods, i.e., the scavenging activity of the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH), the total antioxidant activity, the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay and the ferric thiocyanate assay. In addition, the total phenolics was determined. The obtained results revealed that among the studied fractions the ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed the most potent DPPH-radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 5.3 ? 0.71 ?g mL-1, which is even more effective than the standard antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (IC50 value 0f 12.1? 0.92 ?g mL-1). The ethyl acetate fraction also showed the highest FRAP value (3677.13 ? 27.1 ?g TE mL-1), inhibition of lipid peroxidation (60.93 ? 0.84 % at 500 ?g mL-1) and total phenolic content (95.5 ? 0.05 ?g GAE g-1) as compared to other fractions. However, the remaining aqueous fraction was found to posses the highest antioxidant activity of all the fractions.

Citrus. reticulata Blanco cv. Suavissima friut has long been regarded as a food and medicinal plant. We investigated the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of peel and pulp part of fruit growned in Zhejiang Province, PR. China by several in-vitro systems of assay, namely DPPH radical-scavenging activity, ABTS.+ radical-scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Total phenolic content was measured by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The total flavonoids contents were measured using a modified colorimetric method.The extracts of different samples were found to have different levels of antioxidant activity in the systems tested. Ethanol extracts of the fruit showed stronger antioxidant activities compared with those of the commercial compound (Trolox). The results suggest that Citrus. reticulata Blanco cv. Suavissima friut can be a good source of natural antioxidant.

This study describes the synthesis of Protorhus longifolia methanolic leaf extract-loaded Eudragit nanoparticles (NPs) and assessment of their antioxidant activity comparative to the free methanolic extract. The latter was also analyzed for its total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC). The extract-loaded NPs were obtained through the emulsification solvent evaporation process and systematically characterized using the dynamic light scattering, entrapment efficiency, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The antioxidant power was determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) in vitro model systems. Screening of the different classes of secondary metabolites was carried out through chemical reaction tests. Identification of the potential antioxidants was performed using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique and the database of National Institute Standard and Technology (NIST). The characterization techniques showed spherical-like particles having an average size of 150[Formula: see text]nm and zeta potential of [Formula: see text]22[Formula: see text]mV. The percentage of entrapped methanolic extract was determined to be 83%. The antioxidant assay demonstrated that this methodology persuaded an efficient concentration-dependent potential. This study indicates that nanoformulation of the Protorhus longifolia extracts leads to a suitable system for the enhancement of antioxidant activity. The appraisal of other pharmacological activities of the nano-encapsulated Protorhus longifolia methanol extract is under process.

Verbascum L. species have been used since ancient times in traditional medicine thanks to their bioactive compounds. In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant activity and phenolic contents of ethanolic and acetonic extract of Verbascum glomeratum that collected from Denizli, Turkey. The antioxidant activity were evaluated by using various methods (β-carotene/linoleic acid, ferric reducing power assays (FRAP), radical scavenging assays of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2and#39;-azino-bis-3-ethyl benzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), phoshomolibdenum methods) and total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents in the extracts were determined. Antioxidant activity was determined as β-carotene/linoleic acid (%58.5and#177;0.021), DPPH (IC50: 1.220and#177;0.025) and ABTS (IC50:1.552and#177;0.021), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) (4.151and#177;0.056 mgTE/g), phoshomolibdenum assay (8.218and#177;0.015 mgAE/g) total phenolic, total flavonoid and tannin contents was found as (4.41and#177;0.007 mgGAE/mL), (87.142and#177;0.009 and#181;QE/g), and (30.178and#177;0.008 mgCEs/g) respectively, and then 14 different phenolic compounds in ethanol extracts was carried out by HPLC. Epicatechin (2742.09 and#181;g/g) and 2,5dihidroksi (2544.96 and#181;g/g) were the most abundant phenolic constituents in the extracts. According the results, the extract of V. glomeratum may be considered as a potential source of biological agents.

Clitoria ternatea, commonly known as Butterfly pea flower or Bunga telang, is a tropical flower and notable as one of the most vital sources of polyphenols with high antioxidant capacity. C. ternatea abundantly produces anthocyanin compounds benefiting natural blue colourants. To date, a blue colourant is the most difficult to obtain since the anthocyanins responsible for this colour is the least stable and easily degraded after extraction. Their stability commonly relies on several operational parameters, such as shifted pH value, high temperature, and light exposure. Apart from colour attributes, anthocyanins have also been identified as a source of functional molecules due to antioxidant activity and beneficial health effects such as anti-cancer, anti-obesity, antimicrobial and more. This study aimed to characterize the chemical constituents of the extractable polyphenols from ethanolic extract of C. ternatea quantitatively. The numerical data were evaluated using the Minitab version 18 statistical method. The chemical profiling, including total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total monomeric anthocyanins (TMA) were determined using standard methods. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS methods. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of C. ternatea had 35.7 mg QE/g of TFC, 102.4 mg GAE/g280nm and 28.8 mg GAE/g750nm of TPC and 2.7 CE/g and 2.9 ME/g of TMA. The total phenolic content of C. ternatea showed a good correlation with the antioxidant activity by the DPPH method when analysed using Pearson correlation and showed an increasing trend of antioxidant power with regards to TPC in both assays. In a nutshell, this study contributes to the knowledge of ethanolic extract of C. ternatea. Future research could consider exploring other extraction methods that could enhance the stability of polyphenols particularly the anthocyanins from degradation such as using surfactants.

Several plants of the Rubiaceae family possess potential pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant activity, for subsequent drug development. We investigated the methanolic extracts from the bark and wood of five Rubiaceae species for phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity. Regarding the phytochemical contents and antioxidant activity, Mitragyna diversifolia wood (437.57 ± 9.90 mg GAE g-1) and Haldina cordifolia wood (30.11 ± 0.20 mg QE g-1) displayed the highest total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) respectively. Morinda coreia bark followed the highest antioxidant activities (IC50 = 360.58 ± 19.28 µg ml-1) in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity (DPPH), Catunaregam tomentosa bark (IC50 = 13.96 ± 5.32 µg ml-1) in the nitric oxide radical scavenging activity (NO), M. coreia wood (IC50 = 918.27 ± 0.16 µg ml-1) in the superoxide radical scavenging activity (SO) and M. coreia wood (IC50 = 236.65 ± 1.66 µg ml-1) in ferric reducing antioxidant power activity (FRAP). The TPC and TFC displayed strong correlations with DPPH in M. diversifolia wood and with FRAP in M. diversifolia bark and wood. We found high correlation between TFC and FRAP in all plant extracts except C. tomentosa wood, while no relation was detected between TFC and NO in all plant extracts. Comparing Rubiaceae species, the highest antioxidant potential were showed in C. tomentosa bark. Overall, it is worth mentioning that the Rubiaceae species exhibit potential as a promising source of natural antioxidants.

Objective: The aim of this present study is to estimate the antioxidant potential found in the leaves of Barleria longiflora that belongs to the family Acanthacea. Methods: Antioxidant activity of six different solvent extracts system of B. longiflora leaves was assayed for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical activity, scavenging of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), ferric reducing antioxidant activity, metal chelating ability assay, and total reducing ability. Total phenolic content of the extracts was determined by Folin–Ciocalteu method. Results: The radical scavenging activity was evaluated by DPPH of ethanol extract at concentration of 100 μg/mg was found to be 56.5% followed by methanol 48.4%, whereas maximum scavenging of H2O2 was observed in ethanol 83.4% followed by chloroform 70.8%. Ethanolic extract of B. longiflora leaves showed the highest value in ferric reducing antioxidant power assay 74.8%, metal chelating activity 61.6%, and total reducing ability 0.76±0.02 when compared to the standard ascorbic acid. Conclusion: The results suggest that the antioxidant potential of the ethanol extract has the highest activity in compared to other five extracts of B. longiflora leaves.

Coumarin compounds are δ-lactones where α-pyrone ring is fused with benzene ring. Coumarins are widely distributed in the plant kingdom as well as they are very important in synthetic organic chemistry. Coumarins have great interest because of their abundance in nature and diverse pharmacological activities including antibacterial, antiviral, antipyretic, and anticoagulant, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer. This study focused on synthesizing different simple Coumarins and studying their antioxidant activity. Four simple Coumarins (Coumarin (C1), 4-hydroxy coumarin (C2), 7-hydroxy coumarin (C3) and 7-hydoxy-4-methyl coumarin (C4)) were synthesized by using standard methods and were characterized by using UV, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Antioxidant activity of the simple Coumarins was studied by using standard FRAP assay and Hydrogen peroxide assay and expressed as FRAP value (mmol Fe2+/g) and IC50 value (mg/dm-3) respectively. Ascorbic acid was used as standard. All synthesized simple Coumarins showed both antioxidant activities. Hydroxyl Coumarins (C2, C3 and C4) showed higher activities in both cases than C1. Among the hydroxyl Coumarins C3 showed highest hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity and Ferric reducing capacity too. Antioxidant power of the tested simple Coumarins in decreasing order was C3, C2, C4 and C1 in both cases. But the hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity and Ferric reducing capacity of the all synthesized simple Coumarins were lower when compared to standard ascorbic acid.

This study investigated the phytochemical composition of honey from four species of Malaysian stingless bee i,e. Tetragonula laeviceps, Geniotrigona thoracica, Lepidotrigona terminata, as well as Heterotrigona itama. The measured phytochemical composition was total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity, pH, colour intensity, and mineral element analysis i.e. Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca), Zinc (Zn), Potassium (K), and Sodium (Na). The production of honey by the L. terminata had the highest TPC value (6.74±0.57 mg GAE/100 g FW) while the T. laeviceps possesses the highest TFC value (14.85±3.71 mg QE/100 g FW). In the antioxidant activity measurement, honey from the H. itama obtained the highest percentage of 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) inhibition (29.52±0.45%) and honey from T. laeviceps displayed the highest value in the Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) analysis (0.95±0.013 abs). The four distinct stingless bee species’ colour intensity demonstrated the variation of colour intensity in the range of 0.09-0.23 abs mAU. All honey obtained the pH values (4.75-5.03) within the acidic medium. Mg is the major mineral element in all honey samples which is followed by Na, Ca, K, and Zn.

Apple is an important dietary source of carotenoids and phenolic compounds, and its regular consumption is associated with several health benefits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical composition of fresh peels of four red-skinned (“Champion”, “Generos”, “Idared”, “Florina”) and two yellow-skinned (“Golden Delicious”, “Reinette Simirenko”) apple varieties. Antioxidant activity of apple peel extracts was determined by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and ABTS radical scavenging capacity assays. Total carotenoid and polyphenolic contents were determined spectrophotometrically, while the profile of individual carotenoids and anthocyanins (in red-skinned varieties) was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA). Carotenoid composition was specific for each variety, and total carotenoid content was slightly higher in yellow-skinned apple peels compared to red-skinned varieties. In contrast, total phenolic content was higher in the peels of red-skinned cultivars. Anthocyanin profile was predominated by cyanidin-3-O-galactoside. Antioxidant potential followed the trend of the total polyphenolic content, being highest in “Florina”, as measured by both FRAP and ABTS assays. Our results demonstrated apple peels have high phytochemical content with diverse compositions, and their regular consumption can be an excellent source of antioxidants.
