As the journal nears the end of its second official year, we are pleased to start accepting submissions to our first two Special Issues. The first Special Issue is on Resilience of complex coupled Socio-Technical-Environmental systems through the modeling lens with guest editors Tatiana Filatova, Tina Comes (4TU Resilience Engineering Centre), Christoph Hoelscher (ETH Zurich) and Juliet Mian (Resilence Shift). This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research and international practice to offer insights into the latest scientific modelling methods, gaps, challenges and opportunities and best practice examples relating to operationalising resilience across a range of socio-technical-environmental applications. The second Special Issue is on Large-scale behavioural models of land use change with guest editors Calum Brown (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Tatiana Filatova (University of Twente), Birgit Müller (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ), and Derek Robinson (University of Waterloo). This Special Issue is focussed on better understanding and modelling of temporal or spatial scales in land use dynamics.   We invite new proposals for Special Issues that fit within SESMO’s aims and scope. Our Special Issues are cohesive collections of articles focussed on a specific contemporary theme related to socio-environmental systems modelling. The Special Issue can build on previous work and research gaps, but can also explore new and emerging terrain relevant to our aims. Although the conceptualisation of a Special Issue may be initiated in a conference or workshop, it is critical that such a proposal also builds on the original dialogue. Articles should also be canvassed from across the globe. SESMO is an open access journal with no article processing or publication charges for authors. The Strategic Review for Southern Africa is an accredited open-access journal listed in the IBSS index and the DHET list. It has since 1978 been a platform for strategic and political analyses of themes and socio-political developments that impact on or provide lessons for Southern Africa. As a multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary journal, the Strategic Review facilitates vigorous and enlightened debate among scholars, policy makers, practitioners, students and activists in order to contribute to the wider global discourse on changing strategic and political dynamics within and beyond nation states.The journal publishes two regular issues a year (May/June and November/December) with a possibility of one additional guest special issue per year as need justifies, subject to board approval. Issues are available mainly as an open access online platform licensed under creative commons. Printed copies can be ordered. All submissions are subject to double-blind peer review by at least two appropriately qualified reviewers.

This review article is written as a contribution to the special issue presented in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Acta Radiologica. An overview is given of what has happened with and in the journal during the 15 years from 2003 to 2017 and a resume is provided concerning the handling and flow of manuscripts, manuscript publication, scientific prizes awarded by the journal, and finally the process leading up to establishing the new open-access journal Acta Radiologica Short Reports/ Acta Radiologica Open.

Peer-reviewed publications are the most common way of sharing scientific knowledge internationally. Volcanica is the only fully diamond open access journal in volcanology, publishing peer-reviewed articles without costs to authors or readers. As part of our wider journal mission, Volcanica also aims to address some of the biggest barriers in research publication and to increase accessibility to published, written research outputs. In this Editorial, we discuss Volcanica’s latest venture: to publish a complete Special Issue of Reports—one of our flagship publication formats designed specifically for cutting edge, direct observations from volcanoes—and to do so in both English and Spanish languages. Las publicaciones revisadas por pares son la forma más común de compartir el conocimiento científico a nivel internacional. Volcanica es la única revista de tipo “diamond open access” en volcanología que publica artículos revisados por pares sin ningún costo para los autores o lectores. Volcanica también tiene como objetivos reducir algunas de las mayores barreras de las publicaciones científicas y aumentar la accesibilidad a los resultados de las investigaciones publicadas. En este editorial, analizamos la última aventura de Volcanica: publicar un número especial constituido íntegramente por Reportes –uno de nuestros formatos de publicación insignia, diseñado específicamente para observaciones directas y de vanguardia sobre volcanes– en los idiomas inglés y español.
