There have been considerable recent technological developments for implant overdenture attachments. This study presents an overview of the biomechanical and biomolecular aspects of various attachments for implant overdenture. Available articles on attachments for implant overdenture were reviewed from January 1980 to August 2021 in the ScienceDirect, MEDLINE/PubMed, and Web of Science resources, and relevant studies were included in this study. We focused on the following topics: attachment systems, retention of various attachments, stress distribution with different attachments, the design and fabrication of attachments, digital techniques in overdenture attachments, and the effects of attachments in peri-implant health. We found that plastic resin is commonly used for ball and bar attachments, whereas nylon resin is commonly used in locator attachments. The locator system offers a valuable attachment option for implant-retained overdenture. Attachment retention reduces while lateral force increases with implant inclination in overdenture. The higher the retention of an overdenture attachment, the higher the transferred stresses. Additionally, clip loading produces more stress in implants and precision elements than bar-retained dentures. As such, we conclude that the ball and locator systems the best overdenture systems due to their superior tissue response, survival rate, and patient satisfaction.

The purpose of this study was to compare the biological response to two bone substitute materials, hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) and demineralized bone (DMB), when placed in canine cranial bone. The implants were surgically positioned in 15 mm diameter defects created in the parietal plate, harvested en bloc at 3 months (m) and 6m postop, and fixed in 70% ethyl alcohol to preserve the xylenol orange bone label. Half of each implant site was processed into paraffin and the other half into Spurr plastic resin. In order to evaluate the osseoinductive properties of DMB, implants were also surgically placed in the rectus femorous muscle, harvested en bloc at 3m post op, fixed in 0.1 M Na phosphate buffer, pH 7.2, decalcified in 5% EDTA, pH 7.2, and embedded in plastic. All implants were evaluated with light microscopy (LM), radiography, energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tissue for LM was routinely decalcified with SFFA, embedded in paraffin, sectioned, stained with hematoxylin/eosin, and viewed with a Zeiss transmitted-light photomicroscope [Figs. 1, 2, 5].

ABSTRACT Introduction Immediate implant-loading protocol has progressed because of various clinical advantages offered by this treatment approach. However, available studies on edentulous patients are still few compared to those in which delayed implantloading protocol was applied. Aim This prospective study was to evaluate the implant survival rate and the peri-implant tissue response in a group of patients who received two unsplinted immediately loaded dental implants in the mandibular anterior region to retain a complete overdenture using locator attachments. Materials and methods A total of 24 edentulous patients with a mean age of 63.4 years were involved in this study following certain inclusion criteria. All patients received a new set of complete dentures before implant positioning. Two Prima Connex tapered implants were put in the interforaminal area of the mandible with a flapless surgical procedure, and the prefabricated dentures were immediately retained with a zest locator attachment. Clinical and radiographic records of the patients were reviewed immediately after placement of the implant, at 3 months, and at 1, 2, and 3 years following fixture installation. The obtained data were analyzed using paired samples t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test at 0.05 significance level. Results At 3 years, all implants had osseointegrated with a 100% survival rate. In addition, the total mean marginal bone change was −0.89 ± 0.14 mm, and the mean periotest value was −7.631 ± 0.921. Conclusion Results of this study propose that immediate loading of mandibular implant overdentures that are retained with locator attachments was a feasible treatment alternative for this particular group of patients. To perform safe implant treatment, the anatomical structure and bone quality at implant placement sites are evaluated based on a patient's computerized tomography (CT) data, but there is no definite method to determine placement sites and the appropriate number of implants. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the number and arrangement of implants on the stress distribution in 3-unit posterior fixed partial dentures for the posterior mandible by mechanical analysis using the finite element method. Three-dimensional finite element analysis models were constructed from the CT data of a patient with missing mandibular teeth (Nos. 35, 36, 37). Implant placement was simulated under various conditions. Superstructures were connected and fixed with a titanium frame. As the loading conditions, 400 N vertical and lateral loads (45° on the lingual side and 45° on the buccal side) were applied to the upper areas of Nos. 35, 36, and 37, and the stress distribution and frame displacement were evaluated. When a vertical force was applied, no difference of the von Mises stress was noted among the 5 experimental conditions. When lateral force was applied from the lingual and buccal sides at 45°, the stress was higher than that induced by vertical force under all conditions, and it was especially high under mesial and distal cantilever conditions. When displacement of the titanium frame was measured, the displacement caused by lateral force was greater than that due to vertical force. In addition, comparison between long and short distal cantilever bridges revealed that displacement of the titanium frame tended to be smaller when the short cantilever was used. These findings suggested that the stress on peri-implant tissues and displacement of the titanium frame vary depending on the configuration and number of implants, with greater stress and more marked displacement of the titanium frame being induced by lateral force when the number of implants is reduced and a cantilever bridge is selected.

(1) Background: The importance of this article is to analyze the technological developments in the field of the Internet and Internet technologies and to determine their significance for sustainable development, which will result in the emergence of Society 5.0. (2) The authors used automated content analysis for the analysis of 552 articles published in 306 scientific journals indexed by SCII and/or SCI - EXPANDED (Web of Science (WOS) platform). The goal of the research was to present the relationship between the Internet and sustainable development. (3) Results: The results of the analysis show that the top four most important themes in the selected journals were “development”, “information”, “data”, and “business and services”. (4) Conclusions: Our research approach emphasizes the importance of the culmination of scientific innovation with the conceptual, technological and contextual frameworks of the Internet and Internet technology usage and its impact on sustainable development and the emergence of the Society 5.0.

Abstract Background The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of mineralized collagen (MC) versus anorganic bovine bone (Bio-Oss) for immediate implant placement in esthetic area. Methods Medical records of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Shandong Provincial Hospital were screened for patients who had been treated with immediate implant implantation in the esthetic area using either MC (Allgens®, Beijing Allgens Medical Science and Technology Co., Ltd., China) or Bio-Oss (Bio-Oss®, Geistlich Biomaterials, Wolhusen, Switzerland), between January 2018 and December 2019. All patients fulfilling the in-/exclusion criteria and following followed for a minimum period of 1 year after surgery were enrolled into the presented study. Implant survival rate, radiographic, esthetic and patient satisfactory evaluations were performed. Results Altogether, 70 patients were included in the study; a total of 80 implants were inserted. All implants had good initial stability. The survival rate of implants was 100% at 1-year follow-up. The differences in horizontal and vertical bone loss between the MC group (0.72 ± 0.26 mm, 1.62 ± 0.84 mm) and the Bio-Oss group (0.70 ± 0.52 mm, 1.57 ± 0.88 mm) were no significant difference statistically no significant 6 months after permanent restoration. Similar results occurred at 12 months after permanent restoration functional loaded. Clinical acceptability defined by pink esthetic score (PES) ≥ 6 (6.07 ± 1.62 vs. 6.13 ± 1.41) was not significantly different between groups. Patient satisfaction estimated by visual analog scale (VAS) was similar (8.56 ± 1.12 vs. 8.27 ± 1.44), and the difference was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions The biomimetic MC showed a similar behaviour as Bio-Oss not only in its dimensional tissues changes but also in clinical acceptability and patient satisfaction. Within the limitations of this study, these cases show that MC could be considered as an alternative bone graft in IIP
