The effect of thermal treatment of glass fibers (GF) on the mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of polysulfone (PSU) based composites reinforced with GF was investigated. Flexural and shear tests were used to study the composites’ mechanical properties. A dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and a heat deflection temperature (HDT) test were used to study the thermo-mechanical properties of composites. The chemical structure of the composites was studied using IR-spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to illustrate the microstructure of the fracture surface. Three fiber to polymer ratios of initial and preheated GF composites (50/50, 60/40, 70/30 (wt.%)) were studied. The results showed that the mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties improved with an increase in the fiber to polymer ratio. The interfacial adhesion in the preheated composites enhanced as a result of removing the sizing coating during the thermal treatment of GF, which improved the properties of the preheated composites compared with the composites reinforced with initial untreated fibers. The SEM images showed a good distribution of the polymer on the GF surface in the preheated GF composites.

Interfacial interaction is one of the most important factors that affect the mechanical properties of the fiber reinforced composites. The effect of fabrics′ sizing removal from glass fibers’ surface by thermal treatment on the mechanical characteristics of polyethersulfone based composites at different fiber to polymer weight ratios was investigated. Three fiber to polymer weight ratios of 50/50, 60/40, and 70/30 were studied. Flexural and shear tests were carried out to illustrate the mechanical properties of the composites; the structure was studied using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that solution impregnation of glass fabrics with polyethersulfone before compression molding allows to achieve good mechanical properties of composites. The thermal treatment of glass fabrics before impregnation results in an increase in flexural and shear strength for all the composites due to the improvement of fiber–matrix interaction.

Investigations related to polymer/metal composites are often limited to the analysis of the electrical and thermal conductivity of the materials. The presented study aims to analyze the impact of aluminum (Al) filler content (from 1 to 20 wt%) on the rarely investigated properties of composites based on the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix. The crystalline structure, rheological (melt flow index and oscillatory rheometry), thermal (differential scanning calorimetry), as well as static (tensile tests, hardness, rebound resilience) and dynamic (dynamical mechanical analysis) mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The incorporation of 1 and 2 wt% of aluminum filler resulted in small enhancements of mechanical properties, while loadings of 5 and 10 wt% provided materials with a similar performance to neat HDPE. Such results were supported by the lack of disturbances in the rheological behavior of composites. The presented results indicate that a significant content of aluminum filler may be introduced into the HDPE matrix without additional pre-treatment and does not cause the deterioration of composites’ performance, which should be considered beneficial when engineering PE/metal composites.

Although polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a champion of recycling, intense research is being done to find new solutions for using recycled plastic. This study aims to characterize the mechanical andstructural properties (SEM- scanning electron microscopy) of products made from recycled metal swarf or mesh wire with recycled plastic (PET) in comparison with virgin plastic. Samples manufactured from virgin and recycled PET are made by pressing and high temperature. The loss of mechanical properties ofproducts made from recycled plastic is a major drawback that influences their use. SEM images confirm that the dispersion and distribution of the PET phase is not very uniform. By addition of virgin plastic in various compositions with recycled plastic, processing parameters and mechanical properties can be optimized.

Due to the non-polar nature and low wettability of carbon fibers (CFs), the interfacial adhesion between CFs and the polyetheretherketone (PEEK) matrix is poor, and this has negative effects on the mechanical properties of CF/PEEK composites. In this work, we established a modification method to improve the interface between CFs and PEEK based chemical grafting of aminated polyetheretherketone (PEEK-NH2) on CFs to create an interfacial layer which has competency with the PEEK matrix. The changed chemical composition, surface morphology, surface energy, and interlaminar shear strength were investigated. After grafting, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) was improved by 33.4% due to the covalent bonds in the interface region, as well as having good compatibility between the interface modifier and PEEK. Finally, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observation also confirmed that the properties of the modified CF/PEEK composites interface were enhanced. This work is, therefore, a beneficial approach towards enhancing the mechanical properties of thermoplastic composites by controlling the interface between CFs and the PEEK matrix.

Transverse compression stress-strain curves of a single fiber having a diameter about 10 μm must be measured to obtain transverse compression mechanical properties of high performance fibers. RJY-1 thermo-mechanical analysis instrument that the smallest division value is 0.1 μm can measure the curves of the fibers by installing some auxiliary device on the instrument. The conclu- sion obtained from the features of the curve is that the Kevlar fiber showed a yielding in transverse compression, while Carbon, Ceramic and Glass fibers did not appear the yielding, and their com- pression curves were almost straight up to the point of brittleness. Transverse compression modulus, yield and breaking stress of Kevlar, Carbon and Glass fiber can be obtained from the curves.

The use of cellulosic fibers from different natural sources as fillers in polymer matrices to improve their properties has been extensively studied in the last years. It is mainly due to the vast availability of natural fibers as well as their biodegradability. The purpose of this present work was to extract cellulose, silica, and cellulose-silica fillers – these last called “hybrids” – from rice husk through delignification and subsequent oxidation and, then, prepare composites with polyamide 6 and improve mainly its thermal-mechanical properties. The content of 10 wt.% of fillers was inserted in PA 6 matrix. Infrared spectroscopy pointed the main characteristic peaks of cellulose and silica of hybrids, as thermogravimetric analysis showed high thermal stability of fillers, allowing their incorporation in PA-6 matrix by extrusion method. Thermo dynamic-mechanical analysis showed, in a general overview, a significant improvement of mechanical properties of composites, as elastic modulus, compared with neat polyamide-6, mainly the one with 2.5 wt% of silica and 7.5% of cellulose. This last also showed increasing of degree of crystallinity, measured by differential scanning calorimetry, showing the extraction efficiency of fillers from rice husk as well as the potential application of composites as structural components in automotive parts.

The above paper presents the assumptions and results of the research whose aim was to determine the influence of 2024, 6061 and 7075 aluminum alloys on the final properties of GLARE-type composites. GLARE 3 2/1 type composites, made of two layers of the epoxy prepreg, reinforced with unidirectional glass fibers, arranged in the direction of 0°/90°, and two sheets of aluminum with a thickness of 0.4 mm, were investigated. Composites of various stacking configurations of alloy layers, made of one type of aluminum alloy (so-called ‘homogeneous composites’), and two different alloys (mixed composites), were analyzed. The properties of the composites were evaluated with the use of the mixing rule and compared with the test results. The influence of the used aluminum alloys on mechanical properties of GLARE-type composites has been determined. GLARE-type composite made of 7075 alloy sheets had the most favorable mechanical properties in comparison to properties of composites with 2024 and 6061 sheets. It has been shown how the properties of GLARE-type composites depend on the type of the aluminum alloy. It has been also proved that the properties of GLARE-type composites can be evaluated with the use of the mixing rule.

The influence of long glass fiber (LGF) content on properties of PVC/PP composites were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and mechanical properties. The experimental results demonstrate that long glass fiber could effectively improve the mechanical properties and storage modulus of PVC/PP. The DMA reveals good miscibility between PVC and PP. Based on SEM, good interfacial adhesion between matrix and long glass fiber in PVC/PP/LGF composites was observed. All results in this paper were consistent, and showed long glass fiber could effective influence the properties of PVC/PP, which were proved by the mechanical properties of the composites.

Mechanical properties of composites are strongly influenced by the quality of the fiber/matrix interface. The objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of polylactide (PLA) composites as a function of modification of sisal fiber with two different macromolecular coupling agents. Sisal fiber reinforced polylactide composites were prepared by injection molding, and the properties of composites were studied by static/dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results from mechanical testing revealed that surface-treated sisal fiber reinforced composite offered superior mechanical properties compared to untreated fiber reinforced polylactide composite, which indicated that better adhesion between sisal fiber and PLA matrix was achieved. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations also showed that surface modifications improved the adhesion of the sisal fiber/polylactide matrix.

In this paper, we investigated the effects of a coupling agent (KH560) on the mechanical properties of long glass fiber (LGF) reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composites. The LGF reinforced PPS composites were prepared utilizing our self-designed mold. It’s found that KH560 was beneficial for improving the mechanical properties of the composites. Meanwhile, the fiber lengths of glass fibers in the original injection molded sample and near the fracture surface were measured under the optical microscope. Comparing to the untreated sample, the sample with KH560 possessed higher proportion of fiber length on 0.75-1.25 mm. It suggested that KH560 could protect glass fibers from broken. Meanwhile, near the fracture surface, two composites possessed similar proportions of fiber length on 0-0.75 mm. That indicated KH560 improved the interfacial bonding between glass fiber and PPS. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that more resin adsorbed on the fiber surface, which was consistent with the above phenomena.
