Over the last decades, natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites (NFRPs) gained great attention in several engineering fields thanks to the reduction of the environmental impact and the end-of-life cost disposal. Unfortunately, the use of NFRPs is limited, mainly due to their weak resistance against humid environments. Since limited literature is available about the evolution of the dynamic mechanical response of NFRPs under aggressive environments, this paper aims to investigate the damping properties of flax, jute and flax/jute epoxy composites exposed to salt-fog up to 60 days. Furthermore, sodium bicarbonate fiber treatment was performed to improve the composites’ durability. The effectiveness of treatment was evidenced for full flax-reinforced composites, whereas no beneficial effect was found for jute composites. Moreover, treated hybrid laminates having outer laminae reinforced with flax showed better damping behavior than their hybrid counterparts during the whole aging campaign.

Natural fiber composites are presently replacing the synthetic fiber in many fields. The present research work study is an attempt to manufacture and test the sisal/banana fiber reinforced polymer composites. Composite have been manufactured using banana and sisal fiber along with epoxy resin as reinforcement. With these composites drilling has been carried out to study the factors and combination of factors that influence the delamination of drilled unidirectional sisal-banana fiber reinforced composites. Drilling experiments were performed based on the L9-Taguchi method. Delamination factor evaluated for the selected parameters spindle speed, feed and diameter of the drill tool with the help of signal to noise ratio, ANOVA analysis and to obtain the conditions for minimum delamination.

In the last decade, natural plant fibers (jute, sisal, coir, banana, hemp, kenaf, flax, etc.) are getting attention from many researchers and academicians to utilize it as an alternate reinforcement of synthetic fiber reinforced polymer composites. These fibers are becoming a great replacement of conventional fibers (such as glass, carbon, and aramid) due to their light weight, low cost, carbon neutrality, fairly good mechanical properties, high specific strength, and biodegradability characteristics. Some chemical treatments are required to enhance the fiber matrix interfacial strength and to minimize the moisture absorption by these fibers which would ultimately improve physico-mechanical properties of these fiber reinforced composites. This paper is a review on mechanical properties of the natural plant fiber reinforced polymer composites and various factors affecting the mechanical performance of it. The tribological behavior of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites and scanning electron microscope analysis are also discussed. Some mathematical models are mentioned which are useful to predict mechanical behavior of the composites. It is found that Halpin–Tsai equation is the most effective equation amongst others in predicting Young’s modulus for short-fiber reinforced composites with minimum error. The applications of natural plant fiber reinforced polymer composites in various engineering fields are discussed.

Due to superior material properties of fiber reinforced composites, they are utilized in many structural fabrications. Even though many studies have been reported about various fiber reinforced composites, it is indeed to find more eco-friendly composites for modern applications. So, developing the new fiber reinforced composites and revealing its mechanical properties are vital. In this examination, the natural fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite was prepared by compression molding method. The natural fiber named as Coccinia Indica was used to fabricate the fiber reinforced composites. The impact of different fiber length on dynamic mechanical properties like loss modulus, storage modulus, and loss of weight in fiber reinforced composites was predicted using dynamic mechanical analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. The outcomes revealed that fiber length of 30 mm shows better values in storage modulus and nominal loss modulus owing to higher interfacial bonding among fiber and matrix. However, in other fiber lengths, the storage modulus depicts poor result and high loss modulus is due to inefficient stress transfer.

Natural fiber reinforced polymer composite is a much focused area of study owing to its environmentally friendly nature and good mechanical properties. These composites offer comparable mechanical properties to that of steel and other composite materials. Dynamic mechanical analysis is a widely used technique to investigate the mechanical performance of fiber reinforced composites at a wide range of temperatures. Using this technique, the thermal transitions and damping properties of fiber reinforced composites too can be studied. These natural fiber composites are widely employed in structural applications in many industries. Here, in this short review we have presented the recent works on the dynamic properties of natural fiber reinforced composite materials with an essence of the influencing factors.

Background: This era has seen outstanding achievements in materials science through the advances in natural fiber-based composites. The new environmentally friendly and sustainability concerns have imposed the chemists, biologists, researchers, engineers, and scientists to discover the engineering and structural applications of natural fiber reinforced composites. Objective: To present a comprehensive evaluation of information from 2000 to 2018 in United States patents in the field of natural fibers and their composite materials. Methods: The patent data have been taken from the external links of US patents such as IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, USPTO, USPTO Assignment, Espacenet, Global Dossier, and Discuss. Results: The present world scenario demands the usage of natural fibers from agricultural and forest byproducts as a reinforcement material for fiber reinforced composites. Natural fibers can be easily extracted from plants and animals. Recently natural fiber in nanoscale is preferred over micro and macro scale fibers due to its superior thermo-mechanical properties. However, the choice of macro, micro, and nanofibers depends on their applications. Conclusion: This document presents a comprehensive evaluation of information from 2000 to 2018 in United States patents in the field of natural fibers and their composite materials.
