Dielectric actuators (DEAs), because of their exceptional properties, are well-suited for soft actuators (or robotics) applications. This article studies a multi-stimuli thermo-dielectric-based soft actuator under large bending conditions. In order to determine the stress components and induced moment (or stretches), a nominal Helmholtz free energy density function with two types of hyperelastic models are employed. Non-linear electro-elasticity theory is adopted to derive the governing equations of the actuator. Total deformation gradient tensor is multiplicatively decomposed into electro-mechanical and thermal parts. The problem is solved using the second-order Runge-Kutta method. Then, the numerical results under thermo-mechanical loadings are validated against the finite element method (FEM) outcomes by developing a user-defined subroutine, UHYPER in a commercial FEM software. The effect of electric field and thermal stimulus are investigated on the mean radius of curvature and stresses distribution of the actuator. Results reveal that in the presence of electric field, the required moment to actuate the actuator is smaller. Finally, due to simplicity and accuracy of the present boundary problem, the proposed thermally-electrically actuator is expected to be used in future studies and 4D printing of artificial thermo-dielectric-based beam muscles.

In this paper, based on the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient tensor an elastic-plastic modeling of kinematic hardening materials is introduced. In this model, the elastic constitutive equation as well as the flow rule and hardening equation are expressed in terms of the corotational rate of the elastic and plastic logarithmic strains. As an application, the simple shear problem is solved and the stress components are plotted versus shear displacement for a kinematic hardening material.

The theory of field ion emission is the study of electron tunneling probability enhanced by the application of a high electric field. At subnanometer distances and kilovolt potentials, the probability of tunneling of electrons increases markedly. Field ionization of gas atoms produce atomic resolution images of the surface of the specimen, while field evaporation of surface atoms sections the specimen. Details of emission theory may be found in monographs.Field ionization (FI) is the phenomena whereby an electric field assists in the ionization of gas atoms via tunneling. The tunneling probability is a maximum at a critical distance above the surface,xc, Fig. 1. Energy is required to ionize the gas atom at xc, I, but at a value reduced by the appliedelectric field, xcFe, while energy is recovered by placing the electron in the specimen, φ. The highest ionization probability occurs for those regions on the specimen that have the highest local electric field. Those atoms which protrude from the average surfacehave the smallest radius of curvature, the highest field and therefore produce the highest ionizationprobability and brightest spots on the imaging screen, Fig. 2. This technique is called field ion microscopy (FIM).

Cross-linked polyethylene is widely used as electrical insulation because of its excellent electrical properties such as low dielectric constant, low dielectric loss and also due to its excellent chemical resistance and mechanical flexibility. Nevertheless, the most important reason for failure of high voltage equipment is due to its insulation failure. The electrical properties of an insulator are affected by the presence of cavities within the insulating material, in particular with regard to the electric field and potential distributions. In this paper, the electric field and potential distributions in high voltage cables containing single and multiple cavities are studied. Three different insulating media, namely PE, XLPE, and PVC was modeled. COMSOL software which utilises the finite element method (FEM) was used to carry out the simulation. An 11kV underground cable was modeled in 3D for better observation and analyses of the generated voltage and field distributions. The results show that the electric field is affected by the presence of cavities in the insulation. Furthermore, the field strength and uniformity are also affected by whether cavities are radially or axially aligned, as well as the type of the insulating solid. The effect of insulator type due the presence of cavities was seen most prevalent in PVC followed by PE and then XLPE.

±1000kV DC wall bushing under planning is a complex insulation system which bears the effects imposed by different working conditions. The electric field distribution is concentrated at the bushing outlet terminal, which might result in breakdown discharge especially when short-time abrupt conditions such as polarity reversal occur. In this paper, the finite element method is utilized to analyze electric field distribution and potential distribution of wall bushing during polarity reversal. Electric field distribution and potential distribution at the moment of polarity reversal are obtained, which provides value reference for the study of polarity reversal process.

disintegration examination and analysis are employed in flexible terminal breakdown of 110 kV XLPE insulated cables. It is considered that the main reason of breakdown is the separation of the stress cone of the terminal and the fracture of the semi- conductive layer of the cable insulation. Therefore, the finite element method is used to electric field model and simulate the dislocation fault of internal stress cone and outer semiconductor layer of cable insulation. The distribution of the electric field intensity is calculated and compared. The simulation and calculation results verify the validity of the breakdown mechanism analysis, and put forward some practical suggestions.

The voltage and electric field distribution in an arrester are very important for its long operation 15 kV with and without pollution. In order to clarify the influence of pollution severity conditions on metal oxide surge arrester, the finite element method (FEM) compilation of the voltage distribution in the ZnO column varistors under different pollution layer conductivity (200 μS, 70μS, 20μS) and clean was employed using the FEMLAB package.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have benefits in various fields, they are disadvantageous due to their tendency to form aggregates and poorly controlled alignment of the CNT molecules (characterized by order parameters). These deficiencies can be overcome by dispersing the CNTs in nematic liquid crystal (LC) and placing the mixture under the influence of an electric field. In this study, Doi and Landau–de Gennes free energy density equations are used to analytically confirm that an electric field increases the order parameters of CNTs and LCs in a dispersion mixture. The anchoring strength of the nematic LC is also found to affect the order parameters of the CNTs and LC. Further, increasing the length-to-diameter ratio of the CNTs increases their alignment without affecting the LC alignment. These findings indicate that CNT molecular alignment can be controlled by adjusting the CNT length-to-diameter ratio, anchoring the LCs, and adjusting the electric field strength.

Abstract The nonlocal effects of dimers consisted of two cylinders are studied, whose cross section is elliptical. Importantly, the results with dimers whose cross section is circular are compared. For comparison, the curvature of the ellipse is set the same with the circle, and four different geometries are considered. The electric field enhancement at the gap center and the absorption spectrum of the dimers are calculated. For the second geometry, either the electric field enhancement at the gap center or the absorption spectrum is approximately calculated using the first geometry, the frequencies corresponding to the peaks are totally different. Similarly, for the fourth geometry, either the electric field enhancement at the gap center or the absorption spectrum is approximately calculated using the third geometry, the disciplines of the peak values change as radius of curvature increases are totally different.
