Polymer-based nanocomposites properties are greatly affected by interfacial interaction. Polyacrylate nanocomposites have been widely studied, but few studies have been conducted on their interface mechanism. Therefore, there was an urgent demand for providing a thorough understanding of the polymethyl acrylate/SiO2 (PMA/SiO2) nanocomposites to obtain the desired macro-performance. In this paper, a methodology, which combined molecular dynamics simulation with experimental researches, was established to expound the effect of the surface structure of SiO2 particles which were treated with KH550, KH560 or KH570 (KH550-SiO2, KH560-SiO2 and KH570-SiO2) on the mechanical characteristic and water vapor permeability of polymethyl acrylate/SiO2 nanocomposites. The polymethyl acrylate/SiO2 nanocomposites were analyzed in binding energy and mean square displacement. The results indicate that PMA/KH570-SiO2 had the highest tensile strength, while PMA/KH550-SiO2 had the highest elongation at break at the same filler content; KH550-SiO2 spheres can significantly improve water vapor permeability of polyacrylate film.

Edible films from wheat gluten were prepared with various amounts of glycerol as a plasticizer. Water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability, tensile strength and percentage elongation at break at different water activities ( aw ) were measured. Films with low amounts of glycerol had lower water vapor and oxygen permeabilities, higher tensile strength and lower elongation at break. Wheat gluten coatings reduced weight loss during two weeks of storage for cherry tomatoes and sharon fruits compared to uncoated controls. A bilayer film of wheat gluten and beeswax significantly lowered weight loss from coated cheese cubes compared to single layer coating of wheat gluten.;

This paper explains and demonstrates the effects of beeswax on functional and structural properties of soy protein isolate films, containing different glycerol. The results showed that percentage elongation at break, water vapor permeability, and transparency of soy protein isolate films decreased when the beeswax content increased, but tensile strength and oxygen permeability increased. The higher the glycerol content, the higher the film water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability, and transparency. The results of differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested that beeswax cross-linked with soy protein isolate molecules via connecting with glycerol, composed the film matrix.

Background: Development of biodegradable and biocompatible films based on protein polymer with strong antioxidant and antibacterial activities has gradually obtained extensive concern in the world. In this study, the improvement of gelatin film properties incorporated with Ferula assa-foetida essential oil (FAO) as a potential antioxidant/antibacterial wound dressing film was investigated. Materials and Methods: Gelatin films were prepared from gelatin solutions (10% w/v) containing different concentration of FAO. The effect of FAO addition on water solubility, water swelling, water vapor permeability, mechanical behavior, light barrier properties as well as antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the films were examined. Results: Water solubility, water swelling and water vapor permeability for pure gelatin films were 29 ± 1.6%, 396 ± 8%, 0.23 ± 0.018 g.mm/m2.h, respectively. Incorporation of FAO into gelatin films caused a significant decrease in swelling and increase in solubility and water vapor permeability. Tensile strength, elastic modulus and elongation at break for pure gelatin films were 4.2 ± 0.4 MPa, 5.8 ± 4.2 MPa, 128 ± 8 %, respectively. Incorporation of FAO into gelatin films caused a significant decrease in tensile strength and elastic modulus and increase in elongation at break of the films. Gelatin film showed UV-visible light absorbance ranging from 280 to 480 nm with maximum absorbance at 420 nm. Gelatin/FAO films also exhibited excellent antioxidant ad antimicrobial activities. Conclusions: Our results suggested that gelatin/FAO films could be used as active films due to their excellent antioxidant and antimicrobial features for different biomedical applications including wound-dressing materials.[GMJ.2015;4(2):103-14]

Cellulose-based composites packaging films containing various amounts of modified nano-SiO2 were prepared by utilizing hardwood pulps as natural cellulose resource through NMMO-technology to improve the mechanical properties, permeability for oxygen and water vapor etc. The tensile strength, elongation at break, thermal stability and permeability of the cellulose composites films as a function of the content of modified nano-SiO2 were studied. The investigation suggested that the capabilities of composites films with 2 wt.% modified nano-SiO2 added were improved largely, compared to pure cellulose films, when the diameter of particles is 30nm. The tensile strength was increased from 8.95 to 17.37 MPa and the elongation at break of the cellulose composites films was improved from 41.11% to 58.34%. The composites films with rational mechanical properties have adjustable oxygen permeability (7.90×10-15-72.18×10-15 cm3·cm/cm2·s·Pa) and water vapor permeability (7.12×10-13-5.32×10-13g·cm/cm2·s·Pa). And thermal stability of the composites films was advanced through adding modified nano-SiO2.

The aim of the study has been to develop a biodegradable film from marine polysaccharides. The optimization of polysaccharides quantity for the composite film was sought by empirical response surface methodology. The Box–Behnken Model Design was applied to optimize the concentration of chitosan (1.0-2.0% (w/v), agar (1.0-2.0% (w/v) and glycerol (0.1-0.5% (w/v) as independent variables to achieve the goal. The overall desirability function fits with the quadratic model (0.862043) at a significant level (p < 0.05) for the optimum concentration of chitosan (1.5% (w/v), agar (2.0% (w/v) and glycerol (0.41% (w/v) to obtain the minimum water vapor permeability (7.25 10-10g m m-2 Pa-1 s-1) and maximum tensile strength (12.21 Ma P), elongation at break (7.32%) and puncture resistance (16.18 N) in the optimized composite film. The absolute residual errors of experimental and predicted responses were between 1.24 and 3.56% acceptable levels. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the intermolecular non-covalent hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl groups of agar and glycerol with the amino group of chitosan. 3D atomic force microscopy images revealed that the chitosan, agar and glycerol film has layer-by-layer smooth surface properties due to homogenous interaction among the polysaccharides; this provides the film with good mechanical properties and with functional application. Chitosan was found to be responsible for the lower level of water vapor permeability and higher puncture resistance of the film. Tensile strength and elongation at break were influenced by agar and glycerol. The whiteness of the film was negatively affected with the concentration of chitosan.

Abstract Baicalin, an active flavonoid ingredient of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, was extracted by heat reflux extraction and showed the same significance UV absorption property with standard baicalin. Active films were prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing baicalin extract by casting method. The effect of baicalin extracts on the UV-blocking, optical, antioxidant property, water vapor permeability, swelling and mechanical properties of the films were studied. UV–vis transmittance spectra showed that PVA films incorporated with baicalin extract blocked ultraviolet light range from 280–400 nm even with low concentration of baicalin (0.5 wt%) and maintain the high transparency in visible spectrum. The outstanding UV-blocking properties of PVA films incorporated with baicalin extract were also confirmed by Rhodamine B degradation. Baicalin conferred antioxidant properties to PVA films as determined by DPPH radical scavenging activity. Due to the interaction between hydroxy groups of baicalin and PVA molecule, water vapor permeability, swelling and elongation at break of the films were decreased accompanied with the increasing in tensile strength and Young’s modulus. FTIR reveal that the interaction between PVA molecules was significant changed by the introduction of baicalin. These results suggest that PVA film incorporated with baicalin extract can be used for the development of functional protective film.

Kefiran is an exopolysaccharide classified as a heteropolysaccharide comprising glucose and galactose in equimolar quantities, and it is classified as a water-soluble glucogalactan. This work aimed to investigate the effect of different extraction conditions of kefiran on the structural and physical properties of the edible films obtained. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were performed, together with a determinations of moisture content, solubility, water vapor permeability and degree of swelling. The kefiran films presented values of the water vapor permeability between 0.93 and 4.38 × 10−11 g/m.s.Pa. These results can be attributed to the development of a more compact structure, where glycerol had no power to increase the free volume and the water vapor diffusion through their structure. The possible conformational changes in the kefiran film structure, due to the interspersing of the plasticizers and water molecules that they absorb, could be the reason for producing flexible kefiran films in the case of using glycerol as a plasticizer at 7.5% w/w. Moreover, it was observed that the extraction conditions are a significant factor in the properties of these films and their food technology applications.

The studied samples were prepared from polyethylene (PE) polymer which was coated with modified polycaprolactone (PCL) film in order to obtain bilayer films. Thin PCL film was modified with casein/aluminum oxide compound to enhance vapor permeability as well as mechanical and thermal properties of PE/PCL films. Casein/aluminum oxide modifiers were used in order to achieve some functional properties of polymer film that can be used in various applications, e.g., reduction of water vapor permeability (WVTR) and good mechanical and thermal properties. Significant improvement was observed in mechanical properties, especially in tensile strength as well as in water vapor values. Samples prepared with aluminum oxide particles indicated significantly lower values up to 60%, and samples that were prepared with casein and 5% Al2O3 showed the lowest WVTR value.
