A new family of chemical cross-linked ionogel is successfully synthesized by photopolymerization of hyperbranched aliphatic polyester with acrylate terminal groups in an ionic liquid of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4). The microstructure, viscoelastic behavior, mechanical property thermal stability, and ionic conductivities of the ionogels are investigated systematically. The ionogels exhibit high mechanical strength (up to 1.6 MPa) and high mechanical stability even at temperatures up to 200 °C. It is found to be thermally stable up to 371.3 °C and electrochemically stable above 4.3 V. The obtained ionogels show superior ionic conductivity over a wide temperature range (from 1.2 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 20 °C up to 5.0 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 120 °C). Moreover, the Li/LiFePO4 batteries based on ionogel electrolyte with LiBF4 show a higher specific capacity of 153.1 mAhg−1 and retain 98.1% after 100 cycles, exhibiting very stable charge/discharge behavior with good cycle performance. This work provides a new method for fabrication of novel advanced gel polymer electrolytes for applications in lithium-ion batteries.

In the present work, the effect of temperature and additives on the ionic conductivity of mixed organic/ionic liquid electrolytes (MOILEs) was investigated by conducting galvanostatic charge/discharge and ionic conductivity experiments. The mixed electrolyte is based on the ionic liquid (IL) (EMI/TFSI/LiTFSI) and organic solvents EC/DMC (1:1 v/v). The effect of electrolyte type on the electrochemical performance of a LiCoO2 cathode and a SnO2/C composite anode in lithium anode (or cathode) half-cells was also investigated. The results demonstrated that the addition of 5 wt.% succinonitrile (SN) resulted in enhanced ionic conductivity of a 60% EMI-TFSI 40% EC/DMC MOILE from ~14 mS·cm−1 to ~26 mS·cm−1 at room temperature. Additionally, at a temperature of 100 °C, an increase in ionic conductivity from ~38 to ~69 mS·cm−1 was observed for the MOILE with 5 wt% SN. The improvement in the ionic conductivity is attributed to the high polarity of SN and its ability to dissolve various types of salts such as LiTFSI. The galvanostatic charge/discharge results showed that the LiCoO2 cathode with the MOILE (without SN) exhibited a 39% specific capacity loss at the 50th cycle while the LiCoO2 cathode in the MOILE with 5 wt.% SN showed a decrease in specific capacity of only 14%. The addition of 5 wt.% SN to the MOILE with a SnO2/C composite-fiber anode resulted in improved cycling performance and rate capability of the SnO2/C composite-membrane anode in lithium anode half-cells. Based on the results reported in this work, a new avenue and promising outcome for the future use of MOILEs with SN in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can be opened.

ABSTRACTLi2FeP2O7 is a newly developed polyanionic cathode material for high performance lithium ion batteries. It is considered very attractive due to its large specific capacity, good thermal and chemical stability, and environmental benignity. However, the application of Li2FeP2O7 is limited by its low ionic and electronic conductivities. To overcome the above problem, a solution-based technique was successfully developed to synthesize Li2FeP2O7 powders with very fine and uniform particle size (< 1 μm), achieving much faster kinetics. The obtained Li2FeP2O7 powders were tested in lithium ion batteries by measurements of cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling. We found that the modified Li2FeP2O7 cathode could maintain a relatively high capacity even at fast discharge rates.

Electrodes with high conductivity and flexibility are crucial to the development of flexible lithium-ion batteries. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) LiFePO4 and Li4Ti5O12 fiber membrane materials were prepared through electrospinning and directly used as self-standing electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. The structure and morphology of the fibers, and the electrochemical performance of the electrodes and the full battery were characterized. The results show that the LiFePO4 and Li4Ti5O12 fiber membrane electrodes exhibit good rate and cycle performance. In particular, the all-fiber-based gel-state battery composed of LiFePO4 and Li4Ti5O12 fiber membrane electrodes can be charged/discharged for 800 cycles at 1C with a retention capacity of more than 100 mAh·g−1 and a coulombic efficiency close to 100%. The good electrochemical performance is attributed to the high electronic and ionic conductivity provided by the 3D network structure of the self-standing electrodes. This design and preparation method for all-fiber-based lithium-ion batteries provides a novel strategy for the development of high-performance flexible batteries.

A composite of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) decorated densely with 20 nm Fe3O4 nanoparticles has been prepared by a facile solvothermal method. The Fe3O4/r-GO composites are used as the anode material for lithium ion batteries, which show an extremely high initial discharge specific capacity of 1702 mAh/g. Compared with the pure Fe3O4 nanoparticles, the composite anode exhibits a higher capacity retention capability since its specific capacity fades very slowly and retains a value of 711 mAh/g after 30 cycles. The r-GO sheets worked as an ultra-thin and conductive substrate can not only prevent the detachment and agglomeration of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, but also compensate for the volume change of Fe3O4 nanoparticles during the charge-discharge cycles, and thus extend the cycling life of the Fe3O4/r-GO composites electrode.

A novel membrane electrode was fabricated by coating conductive slurry (K/Graphene composites as its important component) on copper foil. The membrane electrode, as anode of lithium ion battery, exhibited excellent columbic efficiency and specific capacity of 831 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles. The K/Graphene composites presented a multi-layer nanostructure. It provided not only more intercalation space and intercalation sites for Li+ during the Li+ intercalation/extraction, but also alleviated the agglomeration of dispersed nanocrystals, as well as decreased the electrochemical impedance. The results suggest that the membrane electrode holds great potential as an anode material for LIBs.
