In this study, high-order distributed-feedback (DFB) polymer lasers were comparatively investigated. Their performance relies on multiple lasing directions and their advantages include their high manufacturing tolerances due to the large grating periods. Nine laser cavities were fabricated by spin-coating the gain polymer films onto a grating structure, which was manufactured via interference lithography that operated at the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th DFB orders. Low threshold lasing and high slope efficiency were achieved in high-order DFB polymer lasers due to the large grating groove depth and the large gain layer thickness. A high-order DFB configuration shows possible advantages, including the ability to control the lasing direction and to achieve multiple-wavelength lasers. Furthermore, our investigation demonstrates that the increase in threshold and decrease in slope efficiency with an increase in the feedback order can be limited by controlling the structural parameters.

In this study, we systematically and comprehensively investigated the influence of polarization angle on the fabrication of micro-structures by multi-beam laser interference lithography. Using theoretical analysis and simulation, we studied the effect of different polarization combinations, i.e. transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization combinations, on the characteristics of the micro-structures fabricated by three-, four-, and six-beam laser interference lithography. We successfully obtained micro-structures with different periodic patterns such as honeycomb dots, quasi-elliptic dots, different square dots, and quasi-triangular dots. The simulation results illustrate that polarization affects the formation of interference patterns, pattern contrasts, and periods. The methods discussed herein are simple, low cost, and allow excellent control over structural parameters, and hence are useful for the micro-structure manufacturing industry.

Surface texturing for improving the lubrication performance of journal bearings has been widely investigated in the last two decades. In practical applications, the misalignment of a journal bearing occurs due to the asymmetric bearing load, elastic deflection, manufacturing tolerances, and installation errors. However, there has been little discussion on the influence of grooves on the lubrication performance of misaligned bearings. In the present work, numerical predictions of lubrication performances are presented to test the influence of the grooves. Based on the JFO boundary condition, a mass conservation algorithm is implemented to automatically determine the position of oil film rupture and reformation. The load-carrying capacity, friction force, friction coefficient, and bearing moment are computed numerically. The influence of angular position of the groove is first conducted in a misaligned bearing. Subsequently, the groove depth and width are investigated with different values of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] ratios, respectively.
