The conducting polymer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most important and intensively investigated organic conducting materials. The PEDOT:PSS water dispersions with various concentrations of poly (4-styrenesulfonic acid) solution (PSSAS) were synthesized by 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) in the presence of water. The fabrication of the solvent-treated PEDOT:PSS films through spin coating and solvent treatment processes was achieved with a solvent of pure water mixed with acetone (or MeOH, EtOH) in a ratio of 50:50. Moreover, both the organic solvent and water have synergetic effects while the PSS and PEDOT-attached PSS segments will form a coil-like and a linear (or extended-coil) structure, respectively. That may induce a stacking of the linear and planar PEDOT-attached PSS segments, which favors the formation of a crystalline phase. Finally, the maximum electrical conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS thin films with solvent treatment was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Furthermore, we aimed to explain the synergetic effects of phase separation of the PEDOT:PSS thin films by both the organic solvent and water.

La-Nd co-doped barium hexaferrites, Ba0.7(LamNdn)0.3Fe12O19 (D-BaM), were successfully prepared by sol-gel method. PANI / D-BaM composites were synthesized by in-situ polymerization in solution. The structure, morphology and properties of samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), four-probe conductivity tester and vector network analyzer. The XRD patterns showed that the crystal structure of all the samples exist as M-type phases. The SEM images revealed that the particles presented a hexagonal platelet-like morphology. The magnetic properties could be improved by substitutions of La and Nd ions. The saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercive force (Hc) increased with the change of La / Nd ratio to the maximum at La / Nd = 3:1. The doped particles have also been embedded in conductive PANI to prepare electromagnetic materials, and the conductivity kept on the order of 10-2. The microwave absorbing properties of composites at 30 MHz-6 GHz improved obviously, the peak value of reflection loss could reach-7.5 dB.

Formation of the ternary compound Cu3BiS3 during annealing of chemically deposited CuS (∼0.3 μm) films on Bi2S3 film (∼0.1 μm on glass substrate) is reported. The interfacial atomic diffusion leading to the formation of the compound during the annealing is indicated in x-ray photoelectron depth profile spectra of the films. The formation of Cu3BiS3 (Wittichenite, JCPDS 9-488) is confirmed by the x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. The films are optically absorbing in the entire visible region (absorption coefficient 4 × 104 cm−1 at 2.48 eV or 0.50 μm) and are p-type with electrical conductivity of 102−103 Ω−1 cm−1. Potential applications of these films as optical coatings in the control of solar energy transmittance through glazings and as a p-type absorber film in solar cell structures are indicated.

In this study, the photocatalytic properties and morphology of TiO2, ZnO, Ag-graphene-zinc oxide (Ag-G-ZnO) and Ag-graphene-titanium dioxide (Ag-G-TiO2) nanocomposite were compared. The Ag-G-ZnO and Ag-G-TiO2 nanocomposite were successfully prepared by thermal decomposition of colloidal solution. These prepared composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy and photocatalytic activities. The results from XRD patterns show that Ag-G-TiO2 composites and the Ag-G-ZnO nanocomposites were in the form of fcc and hcp crystal structure, respectively. The SEM images show that at calcination of 500 °C for 3 h, the composite thin film of Ag-G-ZnO and Ag-G-TiO2 were homogenous. In the case of the photocatalytic experiments using methylene blue dye (MB) under UV irradiation, the order of the photocatalytic activities from high to low performances are Ag-G-ZnO, Ag-G-TiO2, ZnO and TiO2, respectively.

Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 thin films were prepared on soda-lime glass by sulfurization of the Cu / Sn / ZnS precursors. The microstructure, morphology and optical properties of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering (Raman), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis). The SEM images of the precursor and the thin films annealed at different temperatures are very different due to their different surface products. The absorption spectrum shifts to high-wave band region with increasing annealing temperatures. The precursor thin film annealed at 500°C for 2 h forms a single CZTS phase with kesterite structure and the bandgap is estimated to be 1.54 eV.

ZnO and Zn1-xCdxO thin films have been deposited onto glass substrate using spray pyrolysis at 200°C. Cadmium-zinc alloy thin films have been prepared by taking different concentrations of cadmium (Cd). The elemental analysis and the surface morphology of the films were carried by the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The EDX data show that the films are highly stoichiometric. The SEM images show that the film changes from nano fiber to grain with the increase of Cd concentrations. The X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the films are polycrystalline in nature. The crystal structure of the films changes from hexagonal-ZnO to cubic-CdO depending on the concentration of Zn and Cd in the Zn1-xCdxO films. The optical properties of these films were studied by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The optical band gap of the films was changed from 3.2 to 2.4 with the variation of cadmium.

Al2O3nanoparticles were synthesized using laser ablation of an aluminum (Al) target in deionized water. Nd:YAG laser, emitted the light at a wavelength of 1064 nm, was used as a light source. The laser ablation was carried out at different energies of 1, 3, and 5 J. The structure of ablated Al particles suspended in deionized water was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD patterns revealed that the ablated Al particles transformed intoγ-Al2O3. The morphology of nanoparticles was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The FE-SEM images showed that most of the nanoparticles obtained from all the ablated laser energies have spherical shape with a particle size of less than 100 nm. Furthermore, it was observed that the particle size increased with increasing the laser energy. The absorption spectra of Al2O3nanoparticles suspended in deionized water were recorded at room temperature using UV-visible spectroscopy. The absorption spectra show a strong peak at 210 nmarising from the presence of Al2O3nanoparticles. The results on absorption spectra are in good agreement with those investigated by XRD which confirmed the formation of Al2O3nanoparticles during the laser ablation of Al target in deionized water.

ZnO/AAM (anodic alumina membrane) arrays were prepared by an electrodeposition method and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that the characteristic diffraction peaks of ZnO appear, such as the lattice planes of (100), (002), and (102), moreover, the diffraction peaks of Al2O3 are dominated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show that the average sizes of the ZnO particles are about 100 nm corresponding to the channel diameters of AAM, and the ZnO arrays are composed of those close particles linked together. The photoluminescence emission spectra express that the as-prepared ZnO arrays can give out relatively pure ultraviolet light (395 nm) from the excitons.

In this study, the microstructure of Nd:YAG pulsed laser weld of C17200 copper beryllium alloy is investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The SEM images reveals three distinct solidified structures due to various thermal gradients occurred in the fusion zone. The XRD patterns show that the preferred solidification directions are the same as those of FCC materials. The effects of pulsed laser parameters on the weld pool dimensions were also studied. According to metallographic results, pulsed energy should be kept as low as possible to obtain the weld pool with the highest values of penetration and the least width. In addition, the laser beam diameter should be kept as low as possible. Moreover, polarization was carried out to investigate the effect of passive layer on the reflectivity of surface by incident laser beam. It was found that weld pool increases when the Fresnel absorption phenomenon activated at high pulsed energy.
