Benzoyl and stearoyl acid grafted cellulose were synthesized by a simple chemical grafting method. Using these as chemical adsorbents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), like pyrene and phenanthrene, were effectively removed from aqueous solution. The structural and morphological properties of the synthesized adsorbents were determined through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), FE-SEM, and NMR analyses. Through this method, it was confirmed that benzoyl and stearoyl acid were successfully grafted onto the surface of cellulose. The 5 mg of stearoyl grafted cellulose (St–Cell) remove 96.94% pyrene and 97.61% phenanthrene as compared to unmodified cellulose, which adsorbed 1.46% pyrene and 2.99% phenanthrene from 0.08 ppm pyrene and 0.8 ppm phenanthrene aqueous solution, suggesting that those results show a very efficient adsorption performance as compared to the unmodified cellulose.

Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are developing as a powerful platform for the delivery and controlled release of drugs. In this study, we reported a novel magnetic framework including MgFe2O4@MIL-53(Al) for the delivery of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic. The obtained results of this research showed that 88% of the TC was loaded on the MgFe2O4@MIL-53(Al). The drug release study was performed in pH: 7.4 and pH: 5.0 which showed 75% and 83% release within 3 days. Moreover, antibacterial activities tests based on well agar diffusion were performed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria which exhibited satisfactory antibacterial properties of TC-loaded MgFe2O4@MIL-53(Al). Moreover, the prepared structures including MgFe2O4@MIL-53(Al) and MgFe2O4@MIL-53(Al)/TC were identified using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).

Herein, we describe the synthesis of 3-[N-(4-methoxybenzyl)amino]benzo[de]anthracen-7-one via a two-step procedure including 3-aminobenzanthrone condensation with anisaldehyde and following reduction of obtained imine to appropriate amine by sodium borohydride. The structure of the synthesized compounds was established by elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (EI-MS), and infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound was analyzed by thermal gravimetric analysis, UV/vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy.

The paper presents the synthesis and investigation of zirconium oxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles that were synthesised by precipitation method with the effects of the temperatures of reaction on the particles size, morphology, crystallite sizes and stability at high temperature. The reaction temperature effect on the particle size, morphology, crystallite sizes and stabilized a higher temperature (tetragonal and cubic) phases was studied. Thermal decomposition, band structure and functional groups were analyzed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The crystal structure was determined using X-ray diffraction. The morphology and the particle size were studied using (SEM) and (TEM). The shaped particles were confirmed through the SEM analysis. The transmission electron microscopic analysis confirmed the formation of the nanoparticles with the particle size. The FT-IR spectra showed the strong presence of ZrO2 nanoparticles.

The objective of this study was to develop a novel silica modified large-sized hydroxyapatite whiskers with improved properties for use in bone repair applications. Large-sized whiskers with a mean length of 250μm were obtained by a hydrothermal co-precipitation method at 150°C, 7.5Mpa in high-pressure reactor. Silica modified hydroxyapatite whiskers were prepared by dissolving TEOS in ethanol solution, then sintering with hydroxyapatite. The compositional and morphological properties of prepared whiskers were studied by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fouier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated the evidence of nanosilicon dioxide particles on the surface of HAP whiskers. The size of nanosilicon dioxide particles depends on dropping and stirring rate. Hence, this new type of silica modified large-sized hydroxyapatite whiskers is a valuable candidate for biomedical applications.Key words: hydroxyapatite, hydrothermal co-precipitation, surface modified, whiskers

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanoparticles with uniform morphologies and controllable size have been synthesized by template directed method. The environment and eco-friendly polysaccharide soluble starch is used as a template to regulate size and shape of the nanoparticles synthesized. Structural and morphological properties of as-synthesized hydroxyapatite nanoparticles have been examined through the techniques like Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), respectively. The results indicate that the obtained particles are uniform discrete spherical nanoparticles. The average size of the hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were ranged from 45 to 60 nm.

The Fe3O4/Talc nanocomposite was synthesized by the coprecipitation-ultrasonication method. The reaction was carried out under a inert gas environment. The nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and vibrating sample magnetometry techniques (VSM), the surface area of the nanoparticles was determined to be 77.92 m2/g by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET). The kinetic data showed that the adsorption process fitted with the pseudo-second order model. Batch experiments were carried out to determine the adsorption kinetics and mechanisms of Cr(VI) by Fe3O4/Talc nanocomposite. The adsorption process was found to be highly pH-dependent, which made the material selectively adsorb these metals from aqueous solution. The isotherms of adsorption were also studied using Langmuir and Freundlich equations in linear forms. It is found that the Langmuir equation showed better linear correlation with the experimental data than the Freundlich. The thermodynamics of Cr(VI) adsorption onto the Fe3O4/Talc nanocomposite indicated that the adsorption was exothermic. The reusability study has proven that Fe3O4/Talc nanocomposite can be employed as a low-cost and easy to separate.

Polyacrylic acid/attapulgite (PAA/ATP) composite hydrogels used for removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution was synthesized via radical polymerization with acrylic acid (AA) and attapulgite (ATP) modified by hydrochloric acid as adsorbent. Chemical composition of the modified ATP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the morphology of the PAA/ATP hydrogels was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The swelling ratio, pH-sensitivity and adsorption performance of Ni (II) ions of the composite hydrogels were studied. The results showed the swelling ratio of the PAA/ATP composite hydrogels was higher than that of PAA hydrogels and the composite hydrogels displayed sensitivity to pH values with a sharp increase of swelling ratio when the pH values increased from 4 to 6. Comparing with PAA hydrogels, the composite hydrogels obtained a larger adsorption capacity of Ni (II) ions, the average adsorption capacity could reach 72.8 mg/g and adsorption ratio could reach 84%.
