In this paper, two different models of hybrid ionic liquids (ILs) based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) have been prepared. Additionally, these ILs based on POSSs (ILs-POSSs) exhibited excellent thermal stabilities and low glass transition temperatures. 1H, 13C, and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to confirm the structures of the IL-POSSs. Furthermore, the spherical vesicle structures of two IL-POSSs were observed and were caused by self-assembly behaviors. In addition, we found it very meaningful that these two ILs showed lower detection limits of 2.57 × 10−6 and 3.98 × 10−6 mol/L for detecting picric acid (PA). Moreover, the experimental data revealed that the products have high sensitivity for detecting a series of nitroaromatic compounds—including 4-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and PA—and relatively comprehensive explosive detection in all of the tests of IL-POSSs with nitroaromatic compounds thus far. Additionally, the data indicate that these two new ILs have great potential for the detection of explosives. Therefore, our work may provide new materials including ILs as fluorescent sensors in detecting nitroaromatic explosives.

This study reports a novel series of imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) towards effective detection of metal ions, especially Fe3+ ion. 1H, 13C, 29Si NMR, high resolution mass spectra (HRMS) and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) were applied to confirm the structures of the ILs based on POSS (ILs-POSS). The three ILs-POSS were synthesized via a green chemistry approach—a thiol-ene “click” reaction without metal ions as catalysts. Furthermore, the spherical vesicle structures of the ILs-POSS were observed and caused by self-assembly behaviors. Through comprehensive characterizations, these ILs-POSS have performed excellent thermal stabilities and low glass transition temperatures. In addition, we found it very meaningful that the limits of detection (LODs) of the three ILs-POSS for the detection of the Fe3+ ion were 7.91 × 10−8 M, 1.2 × 10−7 M, and 1.2 × 10−7 M, respectively. These data illustrate that these ILs-POSS have great potential for the detection of the Fe3+ ion. In conclusion, this study not only prepared novel ILs-POSS, but also provided new materials as fluorescent sensors in the detection of Fe3+.

Two highly fluorescent calix[4]arene-containing phenylene-alt-ethynylene-carbazolylene polymers (Calix-PPE-CBZs) were used in the detection of explosives from the nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) family, in solution and in vapour phases. Both fluorophores exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity towards NACs detection. The quenching efficiencies in solution, assessed through static Stern-Volmer constants (KSV), follow the order picric acid (PA) >> 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) > 2,4-dinitrotoluene > (2,4-DNT) > nitrobenzene (NB). These correlate very well with the NACs electron affinities, as evaluated from their lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) energies, indicating a photo-induced electron transfer as the dominant mechanism in fluorescence quenching. Moreover, and most interesting, detection of TNT, 2,4-DNT and NB vapours via thin-films of Calix-PPE-CBZs revealed a remarkably sensitive response to these analytes, comparable to state-of-the-art chemosensors. The study also analyses and compares the current results to previous disclosed data on the detection of NACs by several calix[4]arene-based conjugated polymers and non-polymeric calix[4]arenes-carbazole conjugates, overall highlighting the superior role of calixarene and carbazole structural motifs in NACs’ detection performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on polymer models were used to support some of the experimental findings.

Under urothermal conditions, the self-assembly of ZnII ions, 1,2,3-triazole, and two isomeric dicarboxylate ligands (1,4-H2ndc and 2,6-H2ndc) afforded two new metal–organic frameworks, namely [Zn(1,4-ndc)0.5(taz)]n·n(e-urea) (1) and [Zn(2,6-ndc)0.5(taz)]n·n(H2O)·n(e-urea) (2) (1,4-H2ndc = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; 2,6-H2ndc = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; Htaz = 1,2,4-triazole; e-urea = ethyleneurea), which were further determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, elemental analyses, powder X-ray diffraction analyses, and IR spectra. Compound 1 features a 3D pillar-layered framework with 6-connected pcu topology (pcu = α-Po), and compound 2 also features a 3D pillar-layered framework with 6-connected pcu topology. In addition, the thermal stabilities and solid-state photoluminescent properties of compounds 1 and 2 were also studied.

AbstractWe report a new method of Thin Crystal Film deposition. In the present paper we describe the method of crystallization, structure, and optical properties of Bisbenzimidazo[2,1-a:1',2',b']anthra[2,1,9-def:6,5,10-d'e'f']-diisoquinoline-6,9-dion (mixture with cis-isomer) (abbreviated DBI PTCA) sulfonation product. The Thin Crystal Film has a thickness of 200-1000 nm, with anisotropic optical properties such as refraction and absorption indices. X-ray diffraction data evidences a lyotropic liquid crystalline state in liquid phase and crystalline state in solid film. Anisotropic optical properties of the film make it useful in optical devices, e.g. liquid crystal displays.

Iron/iron oxide-based nanocomposites were prepared by IR laser sensitized pyrolysis ofFe(CO)5and methyl methacrylate (MMA) mixtures. The morphology of nanopowder analyzed by TEM indicated that mainly core-shell structures were obtained. X-ray diffraction techniques evidence the cores as formed mainly by iron/iron oxide crystalline phases. A partially degraded (carbonized) polymeric matrix is suggested for the coverage of the metallic particles. The nanocomposite structure at the variation of the laser density and of the MMA flow was studied. The new materials prepared as thick films were tested for their potential for acting as gas sensors. The temporal variation of the electrical resistance in presence ofNO2, CO, andCO2, in dry and humid air was recorded. Preliminary results show that the samples obtained at higher laser power density exhibit rather high sensitivity towardsNO2detection andNO2selectivity relatively to CO andCO2. An optimum working temperature of200°Cwas found.

The evolution of designed [(Ti-Te)]x[(Sb-Te)]y, [(Bi-Te)]x[(Sb-Te)]y, [(Ti-Te)]w[(Bi-Te)]x[(Sb-Te)]y and [(Ti-Te)]w[(Bi-Te)]x[(Ti-Te)]y[(Sb-Te)]z precursors were followed as a function of annealing temperature and time using both low and high angle x-ray diffraction techniques to probe the self assembly into nanolaminate materials. The [(Bi-Te)]x[(Sb-Te)]y precursors were found to interdiffuse at low temperatures to form a (BixSb1-x)2Te3 alloy. The [(Ti-Te)]x[(Bi-Te)]y and [(Ti-Te)]x[(Sb-Te)]y precursors formed ordered nanolaminates [{(TiTe2)}1.35]x[Bi2Te3]y and [{(TiTe2)}1.35]x[Sb2Te3]y respectively. The [(Ti-Te)]w[(Bi-Te)]x[(Sb-Te)]x precursors formed [{(TiTe2)}1.35]w[(Bi0.5Sb0.5)2Te3]2x nanolaminates on annealing, as the bismuth and antimony layers interdiffused. Over the range of TiTe2 thicknesses used in [(Ti-Te)]w[(Bi-Te)]x[(Ti-Te)]y[(Sb-Te)]z precursors, Bi and Sb were found to interdiffuse through the 2-4 nm thick Ti-Te layers, resulting in the formation of (BixSb1-x)2Te3 alloy layers as part of the final nanolaminated products. When the Bi-Te and Sb-Te thicknesses were equal in the amorphous precursors, symmetric [{(TiTe2)}1.35]m[(Bi0.5Sb0.5)2Te3]n nanolamiantes were formed. When the thicknesses of Bi-Te and Sb-Te layers were not equal in the amorphous precursor, asymmetric [(TiTe2)1.35]m[(BixSb1-x)2Te3]n[(TiTe2)1.35]m[(BixSb1-x)2Te3]p nanolaminates were formed. These results imply that to form (A)w(B)x(C)y nanolaminates using designed layered precursors all three components must be immiscible. To form (A)x(B)y(A)x(C)z nanolaminates, the components must be immiscible or the precursor to the A component and the A component itself must be an effective interdiffusion barrier preventing B and C from mixing.

In this paper gas sensing properties of 0.5–3% polyaniline (PAni) doped SnO 2 thin films sensors prepared by chemical route have been studied towards the trace level detection of NO 2 gas. The structural, optical and surface morphological properties of the PAni doped SnO 2 thin films were investigated by performing X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy measurements. A good correlation has been identified between the microstructural and gas sensing properties of these prepared sensors. Out of these films, 1% PAni doped SnO 2 sensor showed high sensitivity towards NO 2 gas along with a sensitivity of 3.01 × 102 at 40°C for 10 ppm of gas. On exposure to NO 2 gas, resistance of all sensors increased to a large extent, even greater than three orders of magnitude. These changes in resistance upon removal of NO 2 gas are found to be reversible in nature and the prepared composite film sensors showed good sensitivity with relatively faster response/recovery speeds.

Polyaniline (PANI) nanotubes were synthesized separately using amino acetic acid (AA), ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), oxalic acid (OA) as dopant and ammonium persulfate (APS) as oxidant by a self-assembly method. SEM, TEM,FTIR and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and applying the 4 probes method characterized the morphology, structure and property of the product. It was found that nanotubes morphology were synthesized when the [Aci/[A ratio is 1:2.The room template conductivity of the products were studied.
