The use of complementary medicine has recently increased in an attempt to find effective alternative therapies that reduce the adverse effects of drugs. Punica granatum L. (pomegranate) has been used in traditional medicine for different kinds of pain. This review aims to explore the scientific evidence about the antinociceptive effect of pomegranate. A selection of original scientific articles that accomplished the inclusion criteria was carried out. It was found that different parts of pomegranate showed an antinociceptive effect; this effect can be due mainly by the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, or fatty acids. It is suggested in the literature that the mechanisms of action may be related to the activation of the L-arginine / NO pathway, members of the TRP superfamily (TRPA1 or TRPV1) and the opioid system. The implications for the field are to know the mechanisms of action by which this effect is generated and thus be able to create alternative treatments for specific types of pain, which help alleviate it and reduce the adverse effects produced by drugs. The results propose that pomegranate and secondary metabolites could be considered in the treatment of inflammatory, nociceptive, and neuropathic pain.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE To present scientific evidence based on a systematic literature review (PRISMA) evaluating the association of Kawasaki Disease (DK) and COVID-19 in children. METHODS For the selection of studies, a combination based on the Medical Subject Heading Terms (MeSH) was used. The Medline (Pubmed), LILACS, SciELO, COCHRANE, and BIREME databases were used. The search period for the articles comprised the last 10 years (2010 to 2020). RESULTS 840 articles with potential for inclusion were retrieved, one of which met the inclusion criteria and the guiding question that consisted of evaluating the association of Kawasaki disease and COVID-19 in children. CONCLUSION A significant increase in the incidence of Kawasaki-type diseases after the onset of the epidemic has been reported, suggesting an association between the COVID-19 epidemic and the high incidence of a severe form of KD. However, further studies are needed to conduct an investigation of the association between these two diseases.

Despite the availability of many anti-pain drugs, in the form of NSAIDs, steroids, gabapentinoids, opioids, and antidepressants, in this study we address the natural compounds belonging to the group of Mexican medicinal plants or “Mexican folk medicine”, used for pain management in Mexico. Our interest in this subject is due to the growing idea that “natural is harmless” and to the large number of side effects exhibited in pharmacotherapy. The objective of this review was to document the scientific evidence about Mexican medicinal plants and their derivatives used for inflammatory and neuropathic pain treatment, as well as the mechanisms of action implicated in their antinociceptive effects, their possible adverse effects, and the main pharmacological aspects of each plant or compound. Our data review suggested that most studies on Mexican medicinal plants have used inflammatory experimental models for testing. The anti-pain properties exerted by medicinal plants lack adverse effects, and their toxicological assays report that they are safe to consume; therefore, more studies should be performed on preclinical neuropathic pain models. Moreover, there is no convincing evidence about the possible mechanisms of action involved in the anti-pain properties exerted by Mexican plants. Therefore, the isolation and pharmacological characterization of these plant derivatives’ compounds will be important in the design of future preclinical studies.

Objective: To provide a tool to assist health professionals in the medical clinic regarding treatments still under study to combat COVID-19 and serve as a basis for future studies. Methods: For the development of this systematic review, research was carried out on the Embase, Pubmed databases and on the website clinicaltrials.gov, with the following inclusion criteria: selection of clinical trials carried out in adults, randomized or not, who addressed the discussion on the treatment or development of vaccines for COVID-19. Of the articles found, 22 studies were selected and those with a different methodological design were excluded. Results: The studies cover clinical trials that are divided into double or triple blind and present a low risk of bias. Among the tested interventions, Hydroxychloroquine and antivirals are the drugs that show the most promise in controlling the disease. The final results, however, are not yet available, as studies are ongoing. Final considerations: There is still no scientific evidence to recommend the use of any of the tested drugs, making it necessary to continue and maintain ongoing studies.

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the analgesic activity of lyophilized juice of Punica granatum L., obtained from Hidalgo, Mexico, in theformalin test.Methods: We extracted the juice manually, filtered it and then dried down in a lyophilizer machine. We evaluated the antinociceptive effect oflyophilized juice from pomegranate in the formalin test (2%) in male Wistar rats (180–200 g body weight). Thirty minutes before the test, a dose of316 mg/kg (lyophilized juice) and acetylsalicylic acid as reference drug (100 mg/kg) both were administered intragastrically (i.g.).Results: The oral administration of lyophilized juice of pomegranate showed a significant decrease in the number of flinches in the temporal courseand a significant antinociceptive effect in nociceptive and inflammatory pain compared with the vehicle. In the same way, this effect appeared with thedrug of reference (acetylsalicylic acid 100 mg/kg i.g). Furthermore, it was shown that juice had a 34% of antinociception on overall effect versus vehicle.Conclusion: The results suggest that lyophilized juice of pomegranate has antinociceptive effect in nociceptive and inflammatory pain. Therefore, thisstudy supports the possible use of this lyophilized juice of pomegranate in the treatment of pain.

Twenty exotic pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) germplasms were studied to determine the genetic parameters to understand the usefulness of genotypes in the breeding program. Forty characteristics were measured in fruits, arils, leaves, and flowers, as well as juice characteristics including, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, sugars, anthocyanin, and phenols. Analysis of variance establishes that among all the parameters analyzed, a significant genetic difference was present for yield and yield attribution traits of the studied pomegranate germplasm. All plants were grouped into five clusters among them Green Globe and Hakubotan were most distinct from others. Saharnyi, Orange, Ovadan, Nusai, Kaim-anar, Al-Sirin-Nar, 20090265, Eve and Sogdiana may be used as one of the parent with another parent Green Globe for getting better recombinants by hybridization method. The presence of significant inter-cluster variations revealed that hybridization program could be useful for the development of better plant type by using this pomegranate germplasms. Factor analysis exhibits that fruit weight shown to have the highest different value in the tested pomegranate germplasms so that this trait can be used for the separation and selection of pomegranate germplasms.

The present experiment was conducted to study the correlation and path coefficient analyses among some morphological and biochemical traits of twenty-three pomegranate genotypes. Results of correlation analysis showed a high, positive and statistically significant (at 0.1% P) correlation between fruit weight and fruit length (r= 0.897), peel weight (r=0.931), fruit volume (r= 0.67), fruit diameter (r=0.554) and total number of arils per fruit (r=0.428). Peel weight exerted direct positive effect as well indirect positive effect on fruit weight through characters like fruit volume, fruit length, total no. of arils per fruit, aril weight and fruit diameter while among the biochemical traits, fruit juiciness exerted maximum positive direct effect on TSS (0.298). The results suggested that these traits could be used for indirect selection of genotypes for higher yield and fruit quality traits will be suitable for cultivation as well as for use in breeding programme.
