A thermal radiation light source, such as an incandescent light bulb, is considered a legacy light source with low luminous efficacy. However, it is an ideal energy source converting light with high efficiency from electric power to radiative power. In this work, we evaluate a thermal radiation light source and propose a new type of filament using a refractory metasurface to fabricate an efficient light bulb. We demonstrate visible-light spectral control using a refractory metasurface made of tantalum with an optical microcavity inserted into an incandescent light bulb. We use a nanoimprint method to fabricate the filament that is suitable for mass production. A 1.8 times enhancement of thermal radiation intensity is observed from the microcavity filament compared to the flat filament. Then, we demonstrate the thermal radiation control of the metasurface using a refractory plasmonic cavity made of hafnium nitride. A single narrow resonant peak is observed at the designed wavelength as well as the suppression of thermal radiation in wide mid-IR range under the condition of constant surface temperature.

The spectrally selective coating technology which can be applicable for solar-thermophotovoltaic (solar-TPV) generation systems is described in this paper. In solar-TPV system, the spectrally selective absorber plays a key role to obtain high-efficiency. The technologies of controlling thermal radiation spectrum at temperature over 1000°C, however, have not been established yet. We focus on metal-dielectric multi-layer coating. This selective coating shows enormously high absorptance at short wavelength range and sharp cutoff property. Thermal stability test confirms that this multi-layer structure can be one of the candidates for the selective coatings for solar-TPV systems.

Broiler production is highly dependent on the use of artificial light. The light source may affect the effectiveness of housing conditions due to increasing ambient temperature and concentration of noxious gases. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of different bulb types on the thermal, aerial, and acoustic environment of broiler aviaries. The experiment was carried out at a commercial broiler farm in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Three aviaries were used, and two flocks of male broilers from Cobb® genetic strain were reared from the first day to slaughter. Each aviary was equipped with a different light source, comprising the adopted treatments (A1 - incandescent light bulb, control; A2 - sodium vapor light bulb; A3 - fluorescent light bulb). The aviaries were divided into nine quadrants, and the environmental data (ambient dry bulb temperature and relative humidity), litter surface temperature, CO2 and NH3 concentrations, and bird sound pressure behavior were recorded in each quadrant. The aviary with incandescent light presented higher air and litter temperatures, and concentration of gases than the other tested alternatives. It also presented higher level of sound pressure in the second week of the growing period; however, from this period up to slaughter, there was no effect of the light source on the results of broiler sound pressure level.

By presenting real stories of frustrations, failures, and successes—Andrew Wiles’ proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem, Keith Jarrett’s unforgettable 1975 Köln performance, and Thomas Edison’s struggles with the incandescent light bulb, among others—the chapter further investigates the value and importance of frustration. Whereas Chapter 6 was concerned with articulating the motivational value of frustration, this chapter demonstrates the capacity of frustration to structure our lives and to endow them with significance and personal meaning. Specifically, the chapter describes how what we experience as frustrating, difficult, and effortful can often become valuable precisely because it is frustrating, difficult, and effortful to us. The chapter thus makes clear that the experience of frustration can lead to the generation of value and argues that a life devoid of frustrations runs the risk of becoming meaningless.

Abstract Tests were conducted from 14 Jul through 8 Sep 1994 on 8 year old orchid plants at a commercial dendrobium farm in Kailua-Kona. Plants were growing in 1.3 cm crushed basaltic rock under 30% polypropylene shade using standard cultural practices. Experimental plots measured 40 ft2 with 58 plants per plot arranged in a RCB with four blocks. Four weekly applications of insecticides were applied beginning 14 Jul and ending 4 Aug. A spreader-sticker (Ad-here, J. R. Simplot, Lanthrop, CA) was added to all foliar treatments, including the control, at a rate of 0.5 ml per liter solution. Insecticides were applied at 1,345 liters/ha using a backpack sprayer (Solo Inc., Newport News, VA) equipped with an 8004 Teejet nozzle (Spraying systems Co. Wheaton, IL) at 276 KPa. The control was sprayed with water. Treatment efficacy was evaluated by randomly harvesting 5 inflorescences weekly from each block. Blossoms were removed from the inflorescences, counted, and placed in Berlese funnels heated with a 60 watt incandescent light bulb. Thrips were collected in an 8:2:1:1 solution of ethanol, distilled H20, acetic acid and glycerin, and the number of nymphs and adults counted. Because the number of blossoms per inflorescences varied, thrips counts were adjusted to the number of thrips per blossom by dividing the total number of thrips recovered by the total number of blossoms. Data were transformed to log,0(x + 1) and analyzed by ANOVA.

Main aim of the presented paper is the theoretical analysis and experimental verification of the transformation parameters for the new type of nonhomogeneously poled ring transformer. The input part is poled in the thickness direction and output part in the radial direction. Two transformer geometries are studied — the input part is at inner ring segment, or it is at the outer ring segment. The optimum electrode size aspect ratios have been found experimentally as [Formula: see text] for the ring with aspect ratio [Formula: see text]. The fundamental as well as higher overtone resonances were studied for the transformation ratio, the optimum resistive load, efficiency and no-load transformation ratio. Higher overtones have better transformation parameters compared to the fundamental resonance. The new type ring transformer exhibits very high transformation ratios up to 200 under no-load and up to 13.4 under a high efficiency of 97% at the optimum load conditions of 10 [Formula: see text]. Strong electric field gradient at the output circuit is applicable for the electrical discharge generation.

The pipe thread forming machine was innovatively designed in the article, using Pro/E as a design tool, we built the structural model of the pipe thread forming machine and performed interference detection and movement simulation for it, on the basis of this, we made a physical prototype. And our experiment showed the complete machine has the characteristics of high efficiency, tight structure, small volume and light weight, and it was easy to move.
