The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has indelibly impacted routine healthcare provision across the globe. Nevertheless, management of traumatic injuries has remained a priority patient care service of oral and maxillofacial (OMF) practice. This study aimed to explore the pattern and mechanisms of OMF injuries presenting at a major public dental hospital during a COVID-19 lockdown period in Sri Lanka. An enhanced OMF injury surveillance system was established at the National Dental Hospital (Teaching) Sri Lanka (NDHTSL) on 1 March 2020. OMF injury surveillance data from 1 March 2020 to 31 May 2020 were collated from the “enhanced injury surveillance form”. This period overlapped with the strictly imposed island-wide COVID-19 community lockdown. Pre-COVID-19 period (November 2017 to January 2020) OMF injury data were compared with this period. OMF injuries were categorized as hard tissue, extra-oral or intra-oral soft tissue, upper and middle face fractures and mandibular fractures. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Fisher’s exact and Chi-square tests of significance. A total of 361 OMF injuries were identified among 208 patients who were predominantly males (71.6%); mean age was 24.95 ± 2.76 years. Injuries to gingivae and oral mucosa (26.9%) were the leading type, followed by extra-oral soft tissues (22.1%), periodontal injuries (20.7%) and hard tissue injuries (20.2%). Upper face and mandibular fractures accounted for 2.9% and 1.9%, respectively. Most patients sustained their injuries due to falls at their homes and surrounds. This was significantly increased compared to the pre-COVID-19 period (p = 0.0001). The significant increase in OMF injuries associated with falls around the home during the COVID-19 lockdown scenario in Sri Lanka compared to the pre-COVID-19 period may need further investigation in order to understand the how these injuries may be prevented.

Objectives: The burden of benign and malignant maxillofacial lesions in developing countries has increased rapidly over the years. Objective of this study was to provide a spectrum of oral and maxillofacial lesions biopsied in a tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan and to contribute in baseline data of target population. Patients and methods: This descriptive cross sectional study was made of biopsies performed in patients presenting to OPD of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Karachi, Pakistan, between July 2018 till June 2020. A total of 652 patients belonging to either gender, 18-75 years of age, incisional or excisional biopsy were included. Recurrent or previously diagnosed lesions and patients not willing to give informed consent were excluded. Data including age, gender, site and histopathological diagnosis was recorded on a performa. Descriptive statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 26. Result: Out of 652 biopsies performed, (82.9%, n=541) belonged to soft tissues and (17.1%, n=111) were hard tissue lesions. The mean age of patients was 41.82 years, with a male to female ratio of 2.9:1. The most frequent sites biopsied were buccal mucosa (50.9%, n=332) and posterior mandible (10.6%, n=69). Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) (55.1%, n=359) was the most commonly reported soft tissue lesion with major involved sites buccal mucosa (74.4%, n=267), dentoalveolar mucosa (8%, n=29) and lateral border of tongue (7.2%, n=26) and for hard tissue the most common lesion was ameloblastoma of posterior mandible (3.5%, n=23). Conclusion: This study provides useful information about distribution of oral and maxillofacial lesions and highlights OSCC as the single most frequent diagnosis involving a much younger male population.

The aim of the current study was to analyze the circumstances behind battery injuries, including the mode of injuries experienced (e.g., a shock or consumption), as well as the battery types and products most frequently involved in battery injuries. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a probability sample of US hospitals that collects information from emergency room (ER) visits related to a consumer product, was utilized. Injury data from the NEISS database was coded to identify a) the accident mode that led to the injury, b) the battery type involved, and c) the product that was powered by the battery or charger, if available. The data revealed that battery-related injuries were most often associated with (1) children consuming button cell batteries associated with toys and other household objects, and (2) adults becoming burned when handling vehicle batteries. Surprisingly, injuries associated with rechargeable batteries were the least frequent; however, when burns occurred, they were predominantly related to e- cigarettes, as well as vehicles. Results are discussed in terms of general exposure to specific battery types and products analyzing these battery types within each age group.

Interscholastic youth cross-country mountain bike racing in the United States has grown significantly over the past decade, yet little is known about the risk profile in this age group. Aiming to protect participants, we implemented a prospective, longitudinal injury surveillance system for the purpose of better understanding youth mountain biking injuries and implementing safety measures. Data were collected during competition years 2018–2020, totaling 66,588 student athlete-years. Designated reporters from each team received weekly emails with exposure and incident report forms. Variables analyzed included demographic, rider-related, trail-related, and other data. Injury characteristics during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 were compared to the years 2018 and 2019. More student athletes participated in the 2020 season (25,261) than in prior seasons (18,575 in 2018 and 22,752 in 2019). During competition year 2020, overall injury proportion was lower (1.7% versus 3.0% in 2018 and 2.7% in 2019). Variables associated with injury, body part injured, type of injury, time-loss, and disposition following injury were similar between all years. Despite the pandemic and resultant changes to competition, student athletes continued to ride their bikes and become injured, but the proportion of injuries differed. This report details injury characteristics in youth mountain bike racing, including a comparison of before and during the pandemic.
