The purpose of this randomized, placebo-controlled, blind study was to investigate the effects of the drinkable nutraceutical ELASTEN® (QUIRIS Healthcare, Gütersloh, Germany) on skin aging and skin health. Drinking ampoules provides a blend of 2.5 g of collagen peptides, acerola fruit extract, vitamin C, zinc, biotin, and a native vitamin E complex. This controlled interventional trial was performed on 72 healthy women aged 35 years or older. They received either the food supplement (n = 36) or a placebo (n = 36) for twelve weeks. A skin assessment was carried out and based on objective validated methods, including corneometry (skin hydration), cutometry (elasticity), the use of silicon skin replicas with optical 3D phase-shift rapid in-vivo measurements (PRIMOS) (roughness), and skin sonography (density). The verum group was followed for an additional four weeks (without intake of the test product) to evaluate the sustainability of the changes induced by the intake of the test product. The test product significantly improved skin hydration, elasticity, roughness, and density. The differences between the verum group and the placebo group were statistically significant for all test parameters. These positive effects were substantially retained during the follow-up. The measured effects were fully consistent with the subjective assessments of the study participants. The nutraceutical was well tolerated.

Collagen antioxidant peptides are being widely studied. However, no research has paid attention to biological parameters such as the age and anatomy of collagen-rich tissues, which can determine a change in tissue structure and composition, and then in bioactivity. Moreover, only few research works have studied and assessed peptides antioxidant activity on the food matrix. This work aimed to investigate the effect of bovine’s bone age and anatomy, and of six different enzymes, on the antioxidant activity of collagen peptides. Collagen was extracted from young and old bovine femur and tibia; six different enzymes were used for peptides’ release. The redox potential, the quenching of stable free radicals, and the antioxidant capacity on bovine meat lipids and proteins was evaluated, under heating from ambient temperature to 80 °C. Age and anatomy showed a significant effect; the influence of anatomy becomes most important with age. Each enzyme’s effectiveness toward age and anatomy was not the same. The greatest amount of peptides was released from young bones’ collagen hydrolysed with papain. The antioxidant activity was higher at higher temperatures, except for meat proteins. Assessing the effect of age and anatomy of collagen-rich tissues can promote a better application of collagen bioactive peptides.

Nutricosmetics have emerged to indicate the health benefits of the products that create beauty from inside to outside. Nutricosmetic is the latest trend in the beauty industry. Cosmeceuticals are commonly used in skincare regimens to maintainhealthy skin and improve visible signs of aging. Natural products that target skin have gained great attention due to the general belief that they are harmless. A review of the biomedical literature was conducted using peer-reviewed journal articles toidentify laboratory, animal, and clinical studies that have evaluated recent breakthroughs in the biological properties and potential dermatologic uses of the different natural bioactive ingredients used in nutricosmetics and Cosmeceuticals. Bioactive ingredients used in Nutri-cosmeceutical products are derived from collagen, peptides, proteins, vitamins, carotenes, minerals, omega‐3 fatty acids and plant extracts. These ingredients have been shown to provide dermatologic benefits with potential applications for skin regeneration, photoprotection, wound healing, and more.The information provided by this article is valuable to get the picture of the latest trends. In addition, it might be helpful for clinicians and related manufacturing companies. Despite several developments in this field, extensive research is required for performing successful and precise clinical trials in the future. Further improvements would enable the researchers to develop new products in this field.

Bovine bone is rich in collagen and is a good material for collagen peptide preparation. Although thermolysin-like proteases (TLPs) have been applied in different fields, the potential of TLPs in preparing bioactive collagen peptides has rarely been evaluated. Here, we characterized a thermophilic TLP, A69, from a hydrothermal bacterium Anoxybacillus caldiproteolyticus 1A02591, and evaluated its potential in preparing bioactive collagen peptides. A69 showed the highest activity at 60 °C and pH 7.0. We optimized the conditions for bovine bone collagen hydrolysis and set up a process with high hydrolysis efficiency (99.4%) to prepare bovine bone collagen peptides, in which bovine bone collagen was hydrolyzed at 60 °C for 2 h with an enzyme–substrate ratio of 25 U/g. The hydrolysate contained 96.5% peptides that have a broad molecular weight distribution below 10000 Da. The hydrolysate showed good moisture-retention ability and a high hydroxyl radical (•OH) scavenging ratio of 73.2%, suggesting that the prepared collagen peptides have good antioxidative activity. Altogether, these results indicate that the thermophilic TLP A69 has promising potential in the preparation of bioactive collagen peptides, which may have potentials in cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical industries. This study lays a foundation for the high-valued utilization of bovine bone collagen.
