Mexico is facing the double burden of malnutrition, and adolescents are not an exception. Diet plays an important role, both in causing overweight and undernutrition. This study aimed to describe the dietary patterns (DPs) of Mexican adolescents and to examine its association with nutritional status using data from adolescents aged 12–19 years (n = 7380) from the National Survey of Health and Nutrition (ENSANUT-2006). Principal component analysis was used to derivate the DPs. Associations between DP and nutritional status were determined by prevalence ratio (PR). Four DPs were identified: nontraditional and breakfast-type, Western, plant-based, and protein-rich. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher in adolescents who scored high on the Western pattern (PR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.08–1.21) or on the plant-based pattern (PR: 1.09, 95% CI: 1.03–1.17). The Western pattern was positively associated with anemia in girls (PR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.03–1.35), while the nontraditional and breakfast-type pattern was inversely associated with anemia in adolescents aged 12–15 years (PR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.76–0.99) and in girls (PR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.75–0.97). The Western and plant-based patterns were simultaneously associated with overweight–obesity and at least one indicator of undernutrition. In the context of the double burden of malnutrition, dietary advice must consider malnutrition in all its forms.

ABSTRACT Disease burden and lifestyle patterns have changed rapidly worldwide, especially in some Asian countries over the past 2 decades. However, cross-country comparative research is limited. This study investigated the nutritional status of preschool children and childbearing women in China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan selected based on their socioeconomic status, population size, and urbanization. Nationally representative data were used from the China National Nutrition and Health Surveillance Report, India National Family Health Survey, Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey, the WHO repository, and the World Bank. The prevalence of underweight, overweight, and obesity and some ratios were compared. These rates varied across these 4 countries and were associated with their economic development levels. China's economic status and prevalence of childhood overweight/obesity (11.5%) were highest; India's economic status was higher than that of Nepal and Pakistan, but had higher rates of stunting, wasting, and underweight (38.4%, 21.0%, and 35.7%, respectively) in preschool children. Pakistan had the highest prevalence of overweight/obesity among childbearing women (52.4% in all, 63.0% in urban areas). Nepal had the lowest economic status and overweight/obesity rate in preschool children (1.2%). In general, the prevalence of overweight/obesity was higher in urban than in rural areas, except among childbearing women in China. Nutritional status and health burden are heavily influenced by economic development. The double burden of malnutrition poses prioritization challenges for policymakers and public health efforts. Prevention of obesity is urgently needed, at least in higher-income countries in Asia.

This study aimed to examine the impact of a wide range of demographic, socioeconomic, and community factors on the double burden of malnutrition among women of reproductive age using longitudinal data. We used data about 11,348 women of reproductive age who participated in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), a longitudinal survey, between 1989 and 2015. Nutritional outcomes were categorized into four groups, namely underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity, with normal weight as reference. A multinomial logit model was fitted due to geographic clustering and repeated observations of individuals. The prevalence of underweight decreased over time from 1991 but has tended to rise again since 2004, while the prevalence of overweight/obesity continued to rise between 1991 and 2015. Improved individual factors, socioeconomic status, and community urbanization reduced the risk of underweight but elevated the risk of overweight and obesity. The medium levels, rather than the highest levels, of household income and community urbanization are associated with a higher risk of overweight and obesity. The notable increase in underweight prevalence is a cause for concern to be addressed along with efforts to curb the rising tide of overweight. In order to enhance the nutritional status of women of reproductive age, it is essential to improving the community environment, levels of education, and living environment from a wider context. Long-term and targeted plans are urgently needed for nutrition improvements among the different populations.

Abstract Objectives Disease and lifestyle patterns have been changing rapidly worldwide including Africa due to recent changes in economic growth and urbanization. However, research related to the effects of these changes on nutrition status in Africa is limited. This study investigated the shifts in nutritional status (undernutrition, overweight, obesity) in children and adults in 4 carefully selected low-, middle- and high income countries in Africa, identified factors associated with the shifts, and provided recommendations for future work. Methods Malawi, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa were selected based on their economic status, population size, urbanization, etc. Nationally representative data was obtained from sources such as 2017 Global Nutrition Report, Demographic Health Surveys (DHSs), Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), and World Health Organization (WHO). The prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity (ov/ob), and some ratios were assessed and compared across the countries between 1998 and 2016. Results Varied nutrition status and shifts were observed among the countries during 1998–2016. Countries with the higher economic status also had higher prevalence and faster increasing trends of ov/ob. South Africa had the highest GDP and highest ov/ob rates in children <5, children 5-18, and adults >18 (13.3%, 24.7%, and 51.9% respectively). Malawi, with the lowest GDP, had the highest stunting rate (37%). In each country, but most notably in South Africa, trends indicated the increasing ov/ob rate (11.8%) was much greater than the declining underweight rate (2.4%). Slight declines in overweight in children under 5 years were observed in Malawi, Kenya, and Ghana, which might be due to reduced stunting rates. Sex differences existed in older children and adults, with higher rates of ov/ob in females and undernutrition among males. Conclusions Nutrition shifts, heavily influenced by economic development, are rapidly occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. The double-burden of malnutrition posts prioritization challenges for policymakers. Because undernutrition is now a declining issue, the focus should be shifted towards prevention of obesity, at least in higher income countries in Africa. ObjectiveTo investigate the correlates of the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) among women in five sub-Saharan African countries.DesignSecondary analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The outcome variable was body mass index (BMI), a measure of DBM. The BMI was classified into underweight (BMI <18.50 kg/m2), normal weight (18.50–24.99 kg/m2), overweight (25.0–29.9 kg/m2) and obesity (≥30.0 kg/m2).SettingsGhana, Nigeria, Kenya, Mozambique and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).SubjectsWomen aged 15–49 years (n=64698).ResultsCompared with normal weight women, number of years of formal education was associated with the likelihood of being overweight and obese in Ghana, Mozambique and Nigeria, while associated with the likelihood of being underweight in Kenya and Nigeria. Older age was associated with the likelihood of being underweight, overweight and obese in all countries. Positive associations were also observed between living in better-off households and overweight and obesity, while a negative association was observed for underweight. Breastfeeding was associated with less likelihood of underweight in DRC and Nigeria, obesity in DRC and Ghana, overweight in Kenya and overweight and obesity in Mozambique and Nigeria relative to normal weight.ConclusionsOur analysis reveals that in all the countries, women who are breastfeeding are less likely to be underweight, overweight and obese. Education, age and household wealth index tend to associate with a higher likelihood of DBM among women. Interventions to address DBM should take into account the variations in the effects of these correlates.

AbstractDietary patterns derived by statistical procedures is a way to identify overall dietary habits in specific populations. The aim of this study was to identify and characterise dietary patterns in Swedish adults using data from the national dietary survey Riksmaten adults 2010–11 (952 women, 788 men). Principal component analyses were used and two patterns were identified in both sexes: a healthy pattern loading positively on vegetables, fruits, fish and seafood, and vegetable oils, and negatively on refined bread and fast food, and a Swedish traditional pattern loading positively on potatoes, meat and processed meat, full-fat milk products, sweet bakery products, sweet condiments and margarine. In addition, a light-meal pattern was identified in women with positive loadings on fibre-rich bread, cheese, rice, pasta and food grain dishes, substitute products for meat and dairy products, candies and tea. The healthy pattern was positively correlated to dietary fibre (r0·51–0·58) andn-3 (r0·25–0·31) (allP<0·0001), and had a higher nutrient density of folate, vitamin D and Se. The Swedish traditional and the light-meal pattern were positively correlated to added sugar (r0·20–0·25) and the Swedish traditional also to SFA (r0·13–0·21) (allP<0·0001); both patterns were in general negatively correlated to micronutrients. Dietary pattern scores were associated with, for example, age, physical activity, education and income. In conclusion, we identified three major dietary patterns among Swedish adults. The patterns can be further used for examining the association between whole diet and health outcomes.

AbstractThe use of dietary patterns (DP) in nutritional research is well established; however, only a few studies of DP according to specific meals have been conducted. The purpose of this study was to identify the DP regarding breakfast, lunch and dinner meals of the population (aged 20 years and older of both sexes) that participated in the Health Care Survey of Sao Paulo. Food intake was estimated by using the Multiple Source Method – considering two 24- h dietary recalls. On the basis of the food groups for each meal, a factor analysis, with a principal component estimation, was applied (varimax rotation) in order to derive the DP. Prevalences of meal skipping were 5·6 % for breakfast, 3·6 % for lunch and 12·8 % for dinner. The findings revealed three breakfast DP: healthy, traditional and snack; five lunch DP: traditional, salad, sweetened juice, Western and meats; and four dinner DP: coffee with milk and bread, transitional, traditional, and soup and fruits. The results of this study indicate that the DP identified in accordance with the meal nicely discriminates food intake, emphasising peculiarities that are not found in global analyses and might support dietary advice.

Double burden of malnutrition (DBM) is a growing concern, which refers to the coexistence of under nutrition and over nutrition within the same population. The recent increase in the prevalence of overweight and existing prevalence of underweight among Bangladeshi women clearly indicates the advent of a double burden of malnutrition in Bangladesh. Women’s nutritional status is extremely important for a nation because it affects not only their own health but also the health of their children. Both under nutrition and over nutrition have the potential to make women vulnerable to various adverse health conditions as well as adverse obstetric experience and poor birth outcome. It is a timely need for policy makers of this country to come up with specific interventions for both undernourished and overnourished women considering all these factors.

In Indonesia, the current trends and issues has changed of the malnutrition paradigm. The nutritional status of adolescents in Indonesia is experiencing double burden problems (Riskesdas 2007, 2010, and 2013). This happens due to improper lifestyle and eating habits, thus causing adolescents to be at risk of malnutrition, both deficiency or overnutrition. The nutrient deficiency has an impact on decreasing physical abilities, immune system, thinking and learning concentration. While overnutrition such as overweight and obesity in adolescents, increasing the risk of non-infectious diseases during adulthood such as heart and blood vessel disease, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this study is to develop an Android-based m-Health application model as an effort to monitor nutritional status and online consultation. The development method that used is a prototype. Application modeling begins with system requirements analysis, context diagrams, Entity Relational Diagrams (ERD), Table Relational Diagrams (TRD), Flow Charts and User Interface Design. Adolescent nutritional status measured base on Height divided by Age (TB/U), Body Mass Index divided by Age (BMI/U) and other health conditions. The system information formed by the design concept can provide an information of nutritional status and fascinate competent nutritionists to give an interactive nutritional consultation.

This study assessed the nutritional status of children and adolescents from North Korean refugee (NKR) families who have settled and are living in South Korea (SK). Among the 547 individuals who participated in the study, 526 were ultimately included after excluding 21 with missing height or weight data. Their nutritional status was estimated using the 2017 Korean National Growth Charts for children and adolescents. Stunting, underweight, wasting, and obesity were defined as a height-for-age z-score < −2.0, weight-for-age z-score < −2.0, weight-for-height z-score < −2.0, and body mass index z-score > 2.0, respectively. The overall prevalence of stunting, underweight, wasting, and obesity was 7.0%, 6.8%, 5.3%, and 9.1%, respectively. Meanwhile, the prevalence of stunting, underweight, wasting, and obesity was 5.4%, 7.0%, 7.6%, and 10.3% for individuals settled in SK for <5 years and 6.1%, 6.1%, 0.0%, and 13.3% for those living in SK for ≥5 years, respectively. Therefore, children and adolescents from NKR families experience the double burden of malnutrition and obesity.
