Lycii Fructus is a traditional medicine used to prevent liver and kidney diseases, which commonly derives from Lycium chinense and Lycium barbarum. Here, the extracts and ethyl acetate-soluble fractions of L. chinense fruits exhibited better hepatoprotective effects than those of L. barbarum, which was likely due to differences in their composition. Therefore, GC-MS and HPLC analyses were conducted to characterize the metabolite differences between L. chinense and L. barbarum. Based on amino acid (AA) and phenolic acid (PA) profiling, 24 AAs and 9 PAs were identified in the two species. Moreover, each species exhibited unique and readily distinguishable AA and PA star graphic patterns. HPLC analysis elucidated composition differences between the ethyl acetate-soluble layers of the two compounds. Further, NMR analysis identified their chemical structures as 4-(2-formyl-5-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)butanoic acid and p-coumaric acid. The higher content of 4-(2-formyl-5-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)butanoic acid was detected in L. chinense, whereas the content of p-coumaric acid was higher in L. barbarum. Therefore, the differences in the relative contents of these two secondary metabolites in the ethyl acetate-soluble layer of Lycii Fructus could be a good marker to discriminate between L. chinense and L. barbarum.

Three pyrrole alkaloid derivatives were isolated from the edible mushroom Basidiomycetes-X (Echigoshirayukidake) by water extraction followed by ethyl acetate fractionation. The chemical structures determined by MS and NMR were 4-[2-formyl-5-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl] butanoic acid (compound I), 4-[2-formyl-5-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl] butanamide (compound II), and 5-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde (compound III). Compound I was found to be the major component, followed by compound II, and compound III was the minor component. The dry powder of Basidiomycetes-X contained approximately 825 μg g−1 compound I and 484 μg g−1 compound II. Compound II was found to be a novel pyrrole aldehyde homologue not previously reported and thus is a specific component of this mushroom.

The current investigation was to examine the antioxidant potential of D.littoralis Nees. (family Acanthaceae) On paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The aerial parts of D.littoralis Nees. The powder was concentratesed with various solvents (PE, EA, and methanol) through Soxhlet concentrates and various crude concentrates utilized for hepatoprotective activity.  Hepatotoxicity was induced by paracetamol (2g/kg b.wt.) on the 5th day of the investigational period and given orally.  Paracetamol-induced rats to exhibit elevated activities of TBARS  and reduction the enzymes levels such as Superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAD), Glutathione peroxidise (GPx), Glutathione S transferase(GST) and Glutathione (GSH) in liver and kidney.  Furthermore, Oral administration of the  ethyl acetate  concentrates of  D.littoralis (200 mg/ kgb.wt.) given  rats were major reduction the level of TBARS and  also significantly elevated the levels of the enzyme such as Superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAD), Glutathione peroxidise(GPx), Glutathione S transferase(GST) and Glutathione (GSH)  in liver and kidney as compared to other concentrates. Thus, results suggested that ethyl acetate concentrates of D.littoralis could be afford better antioxidant effect against paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity rats.


The objectives of the study were to assess the potential of herbal formulation made up of Wedeliachinensis leaves and Boerhaaviadiffusa roots in possessing activities like nephroprotectivity and hepatoprotectivity. Nephroprotective and hepatoprotective activity was evaluated using MTT cytotoxicity assay using mammalian cell culture. The results of the hepatoprotective and nephroprotective activities showed that the formulation mixture of herbs Wedeliachinensis and Boerhaaviadiffusa roots is an excellent source of organ stimulator with high therapeutical importance. The hepatoprotective and nephroprotective properties make this formulation a unique one focusing on liver and kidney diseases.

Objective: Cancer represents the second leading cause of death after stroke and heart diseases. Plant extracts have long been used in traditional medicine for the prevention and treatment of many illnesses, including some types of cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antiproliferative effects of ethyl acetate fractions of two Lebanese herbs: Inula viscosa (I. vis) and Inula vulgaris (I. vul).Methods: Plants were extracted with ethanol followed by ethyl acetate, then dried and tested on three cell lines including CaCO2, HepG2, and MCF7, to check for their viability and antiproliferative activity, using trypan blue exclusion and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays. Proton (1H) and carbon (13C) nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR) were used to identify the compounds that have been isolated from both Inula species.Results: The current findings were consistent for both trypan blue and MTT assays. The results showed that the most potent effect for I. vul was HepG2 (IC50 20 µg/ml, 27 µg/ml), and for I. vis on MCF7 (9 µg/ml, 15 µg/ml) and CaCO2 (12 µg/ml, 22 µg/ml) in the two mentioned assays respectively. However, insignificant differences were observed among the studied plants for each of the evaluated cells indicating comparable potencies. Quercetin, quercetin glycoside, and epicatechin derivatives were isolated by fractionation on column chromatography and identified using NMR spectroscopy.Conclusion: The antiproliferative activities of the two plants could be related to their content that is significant for high levels of secondary metabolites. The identification of those compounds is necessary to establish a relationship between their chemical structures and their activities.

Abstract-HCTN_16Methanol extract of the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis effectively inhibited the bacterial growth of human pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Bacillus cereus ATCC 21768 and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 at MICs of 2,000 µg/mL. n-Hexane, ethyl acetate and aqueous residues were prepared by successively partitioning the methanol extract with n-hexane and ethyl acetate. Among them, only ethyl acetate layer showed antibiotic effect; whereas n-hexane and aqueous layers were inactive against tested bacteria. The ethyl acetate residue was fractionated by silica gel column chromatography to afford three flavonoids and an oligosaccharide. Their chemical structures were elucidated as wogonin (SB1), baicalein (SB4), baicalin (SB5) and tetrasaccharide (SB10) on the basis of the analysis of NMR and MS spectroscopic data. The isolates were evaluated for in vitro inhibitory effect against human pathogenic bacteria using micro dilution bioassay method. Baicalein (SB4) showed a broad-spectrum inhibition against various human pathogenic bacteria. In particular, it was found to potently inhibit S. aureus ATCC 6538 and B. cereus ATCC 21768 with MICs of 9.5 and 38 µg/mL, respectively. The study results demonstrated antibiotic effect of the extracts from the roots of S. baicalensis and characterization of compounds isolated from the plant materials.

Objective: To evaluate health care related to medication regimens among institutionalized elders in Damanhour, Beheira Governate, Egypt. Methods: A prospective, multi-centered, observational study was conducted in the two elderly residential homes in Damanhour between March and May 2017. A questionnaire was developed and validated to test for elderly socio-economic, chronic diseases, current therapy adherence, vaccination history and patient education. Descriptive and quantitative analysis were performed. Results: sixty-three elderly residents were included in the study. The sample showed broad socioeconomic variability posing a true reflection of Egyptian population. 63.5% had no hearing problems, 31.7% had proper vision and 57% could move with no help. More than three quarters had chronic diseases of which 58.7% were previously hospitalized. The most prevalent diseases were hypertension, diabetes and arthritis 46%, 41.3%, 26.9% respectively. Only 7.9% and 4.7% showed chronic liver and kidney diseases, respectively and less than 10% suffered from respiratory related diseases. No alcohol drinker, 25.3% were smokers and 58.7% drank caffeine. Only 25.3% of residents showed full adherence to their medication pattern. Approximately 80% of residents never received proper patient education. Forty-three residents did not know the indication of their medications and 92% ignored its side effects. Conclusion: Absence of proper medical care exposure for the elderly residents was reflected in their low medication adherence, adverse side effects and hospitalization. We suggest extension of the national medical insurance system to include larger number of elderly population. To monitor the care given concerning medication, a daily resident gerontological nurse needs to be assigned, visits by clinical pharmacists weekly or bi-weekly from the nearby governmental hospital can improve improper medication. doi: https://doi.org/10.12669/pjms.36.4.1923 How to cite this:Algameel M. Urena lobata L. is used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for the treatment of several diseases. Tree roots are used to treat rheumatism, dysentery, poor digestion, flu, tonsils, malaria, asthma, goiter. Flowers are used to treat chickenpox, fever, and mental disorders. Branches, leaves or whole trees used to treat injuries bruises, rheumatism, mastitis, bites. Phytochemical investigation of the n-hexan and ethyl acetate extract of Urena lobata L. led to the isolation of β-sitosterol (1), β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), a-acetylamino-phenylpropyl a-benzoylamino-phenylpropanoate (3), quercetin (4), and trans-tiliroside (5). Their chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including MS, 1D, 2D NMR and comparing with those reported in previous papers. Two compounds 3, 5 were isolated for the first time from Urena lobata plant.

Objective: Bergenia ciliata (family-Saxifragaceae) is a well-known herb for kidney stone. The main objective of the study was the identification of flavonoids along with ADME profile. Another supportive objective was to check inhibition of enzymes which perform active role in oxalate synthesis. Methods: The hydromethanolic extract was fractionated by liquid-liquid extraction to obtain ethyl acetate and ethyl ether fractions. The chemical structures of the purified compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results: A total of 12 volatile chemical compounds belonging to hydrocarbons, esters, alcohols, fatty acids, ketones, etc. were identified and characterized in ethyl acetate fraction through GC-MS analysis Fractions enriched in flavonoids showed glycolate oxidase and lactate dehydrogenase enzyme inhibition with IC50 value (µg/ml) 65.76 and 69.84 respectively. The kinetic behaviour of the extracts that inhibit the Glycolate oxidase and Lactate dehydrogenase activity was determined by the Lineweaver-Burk plot. The mode of inhibition of the studied plant extract was type of a non-competitive inhibition. ADMET screening of compounds successfully passed all the parameters of screening. Conclusion: On the basis of the results, it was found that Bergenia ciliata (rhizome) may serve as a novel and rich source of therapeutic compounds and it can be further explored for urolithiasis treatment purposes.

The emergence of antibiotic resistant pathogens has continuously increased, leading to a growing worldwide health threat due to infectious diseases. And therefore in our search for antibacterial and antifungal compounds from the polypore Ganoderma adspersum, the dried, ground fruiting bodies of G. adspersum were extracted with methanol and solvent removed in a rotary evaporator. The extract was suspended in distilled water, then partitioned using ethyl acetate solvent to obtain an ethyl acetate extract. The extract was fractionated and purified using column chromatographic method and further purification on sephadex LH20. The chemical structures were determined on the basis of NMR spectroscopic data from 1H and 13C NMR, HSQC, HMBC, 1H-1H COSY, and NOESY experiments. Antimicrobial activity against clinically important bacterial and fungal strains was assessed and zones of inhibition were recorded. Compound (1), ergosta-7,22-dien-3-one weakly inhibited the growth of Gram positive bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia and a fungus Cryptococcus neoformans. Compounds ergosta-7,22-dien-3-ol (2) and ergosta-5,7,22-trien-3-ol (3) also inhibited gram positive Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria.Keywords: Polypores, steroid compounds, antimicrobial activity.
