The aim of the research was to increase the efficiency of the hydrodistillation process and determine the volatile composition, biological activity, and aroma profile of essential oil from celery seeds (Apium graveolens L.). The essential oil was extracted from the plant material by ultrasonic hydrodistillation with higher efficiency when compared with classical hydrodistillation. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the impedimetric method for the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and yeast Candida vini as well as moulds Aspergillus niger and Penicillium expansum with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) (μL/mL) values: 30, 10, 20, 3, 30, 40, and 40, respectively. The oil possessed very weak 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) antioxidant activity with the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 81.6 g/L. Initial studies of the aroma profile indicated that the perception of the fragrance of the oil could be related to the sex of the panellists. According to women, the fragrance of celery seeds oil was intense herb-like. From the men’s point of view, it had a fresh, mossy, and mushroom scent.

The efficacy of extracts and essential oils fromAllium tuberosum, Coriandrum sativum, Cymbopogon martini, Cymbopogon winterianus,andSantolina chamaecyparissuswas evaluated againstCandidaspp. isolates from the oral cavity of patients with periodontal disease. The most active oil was fractionated and tested againstC. albicansbiofilm formation. The oils were obtained by water-distillation and the extracts were prepared with macerated dried plant material. The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration—MIC was determined by the microdilution method. Chemical characterization of oil constituents was performed using Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). C. sativum activity oil upon cell and biofilm morphology was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The best activities against planktonicCandidaspp. were observed for the essential oil and the grouped F8–10fractions fromC. sativum. The crude oil also affected the biofilm formation inC. albicanscausing a decrease in the biofilm growth. Chemical analysis of the F8–10fractions detected as major active compounds, 2-hexen-1-ol, 3-hexen-1-ol and cyclodecane. Standards of these compounds tested grouped provided a stronger activity than the oil suggesting a synergistic action from the major oil constituents. The activity ofC. sativumoil demonstrates its potential for a new natural antifungal formulation.

AbstrakKembang leson adalah racikan jamu untuk mandi yang terdiri dari berbagai obat-obatan herbal yang umum ditemukan di Jawa. Kembang leson mengandung minyak atsiri utama, yaitu camphene 1,29%, benzene methyl cymene 4,93%, camphor 4,75%, cyclohexane methanol 7,56%, dan curdione 4,83%. Golongan senyawa minyak atsiri dapat menghambat radikal bebas 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) dan memiliki aktivitas antibakteri yang ditunjukkan dengan uji aktivitas antibakteri terhadap Staphylococcus aureus dan Escherichia coli. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui aktivitas antioksidan dan antibakteri dari minyak atsiri kembang leson. Minyak Atsiri kembang leson diekstraksi dengan metode destilasi. Minyak atsiri yang diperoleh diuji aktivitas antioksidan dengan metode DPPH, serta aktivitas antibakteri dengan metode difusi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa minyak atsiri kembang leson memiliki aktivitas antioksidan dengan persentase penghambatan DPPH sebesar 56,16%, dan memiliki nilai IC50 (half maximal inhibitory concentration) sebesar 825,78 ppm. Aktivitas antibakteri minyak atsiri kembang leson juga efektif menghambat pertumbuhan E. coli, tetapi belum mampu menghambat pertumbuhan S. aureus. Minyak atsiri kembang leson  dapat digunakan sebagai sumber antioksidan alami. Abstract Kembang leson is an herbal concoction used for bathing. It comprises various herbal medicines found in Java. Kembang leson contains essential oils such as camphene 1.29%, benzene methyl cymene 4.93%, camphor 4.75%, cyclohexane methanol 7.56% and curdione 4.83%. It is known that essential oils can reduce DPPH free radicals and have antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli.  Our research to determine the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of kembang leson essential oil. The essential oil was extracted by distillation. The essential oil obtained was tested for antioxidant activity using the DPPH method, and antibacterial activity using the diffusion method. The results show that kembang leson essential oils have antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The percentage of DPPH inhibition was 56.16% and the IC50 value was 825.78 ppm. Antibacterial activity of kembang leson essential oil inhibited the growth of E. coli but could not inhibit the growth of S. aureus. Thus, kembang leson essential oils have antioxidant and antibacterial activity against E. coli, but only have antioxidant activity against S. aureus. Further studies are needed to determent the main ingredients that play an important role in the mechanism of antioxidants and antibacterial of kembang leson essential oil.

Numerous articles on Salvia officinalis L. have been published regarding the composition of their essential oil. The considerable variation found may be due to the quality of the plant material as well as to the methods used for analysis. A simple GC-MS method was developed and optimized in the QbD approach, for the determination of sage essential oils. The optimization of GC-MS analysis was performed using different mobile phase flows, injection volumes, split ratios and temperature programs. The optimized method proved to be simple and can be successfully applied for the determination of sage essential oils.

The compounds in Ginger (Zingiber officinale-Roscoe) essential oil provenience China and wild oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil of Romanian origin were identified by GC/MS and their antioxidant and antifungal properties were evaluated. Wild oregano oil was characterized by high content of oxygenated monoterpenes hydrocarbons (84.05%) of which carvacrol was the most abundant (73.85%) followed by b-linalool (3.46%) and thymol (2.29%). Ginger oil had a higher content of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons including zingiberene (31.47%), b-sesquiphellandrene (13.76%), a-curcumene (10.41%), a-farnesene (8.31%) and b-bisabolene (7.55%) but a lower content of oxygenated monoterpenes (7.97%). The high content of oxygenated monoterpens of wild oregano oil is in accordance with total content of polyphenols determined by the Folin�Ciocalteu method (6.71�0.73 mg of gallic acid equivalent per g oil). Ginger oil had only 1.34�0.22 mg gallic acid equivalent per g oil. Wild oregano oils exhibited appreciable in vitro antioxidant activity as assessed by 2, 2`-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and 2,2�-azino-bis (3 ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS). The sample concentration required to scavenge 50% of the DPPH free radicals was 0.76�0.13 mg/mL for wild oregano oil compared to 20.22�2.12 mg/mL for ginger oil. Also, wild oregano oils showed significant inhibitory activity against selected pathogenic fungi (Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium expansum). 1�L of oregano oil is sufficient for almost 75% growth inhibition of Aspergillus flavus compared to ginger oil which shows antifungal activity at 240�L for 78% growth inhibition. It can be concluded that wild oregano oil could be used as food preservative in some food products in which Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus flavus and Penicillium expansum could grow and have potential to produce health hazards mycotoxines.

Background: Carthamus caeruleus belongs to the Asteraceae family. The roots are traditionally used as healing agents. They help to heal burns and treat skin diseases. They are also used against joint inflammation and are very effective against diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome for cancer patients. Objectives: The purpose of this work was i) to study the chemical composition of i) the essential oil and hydrosol extract of Carthamus caeruleus, ii) to isolate the major component of both extracts and iii) to evaluate their antioxidant, antifungal and insecticidal activities. Methods: The essential oil and hydrosol extract obtained from the roots were studied by GC and GC/MS. The antioxidant activities were performed using two different methods i) Radical scavenging activity (DPPH) and ii) the Ferric-Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), using BHT as a positive control. Whereas, the antifungal activity of the essential oil and Carlina oxide was investigated against plant fungi. The fumigation toxicity of C. caeruleus essential oil besides Carlina oxide was evaluated against adults of Bactrocera oleae better known as the olive fly. Results: The essential oil and hydrosol extract were mainly represented by acetylenic compounds such as carline oxide and 13-methoxy carline oxide. Carlina oxide was isolated and identified by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic means. The results showed that Carlina oxide presented interesting antioxidant and antifungal properties, while C. caeruleus root essential oil had better insecticidal activity. Furthermore, Carlina oxide has demonstrated promising in vivo antifungal activity to control infection of apples by Penicillium expansum. Conclusion: Carlina oxide can be used as a natural food preservative and alternative to chemical fungicides to protect stored apple against Penicillium expansum.

The knowledge of traditional healers o en represents a basis for the pharmacological and phytochemical inves ga on of naturals medicaments. This work aims for the phytochemical study and evaluation of the antioxidant activity of essential oils of medicinal plant Pistacia atlantica.Through the results obtained, it appears that the leaves are rich in substances with a high antioxidant power. For essential oils, it is 0.24 % for 100 g of plant material. And the phytochemical screening of the plant showed the presence of tannins, resins, coumarins, terpenoids and  flavonoids, and absence of saponins. The strong antioxidant activity of extracts obtained only confirms the traditional use of this plant by the local population.

Even though the Lavandula species may be propagated by seeds, it should not be the preferred propagation method because it causes a great lack of uniformity. On the other hand, asexually propagated lavender crops would provide more homogeneous crops, and clones from high quality plant material would increase the odds for obtaining a higher quality essential oil. However, problems such as poor rooting and restrict market availability for superior clones have been a problem in vegetative propagation of the Lavandula species. The objective of this work was to define which type and size of cutting is more adequate for cutting propagation of L. dentata, a very productive Lavandula species. Cuttings with 5, 8, 10 or 13 cm and from the apical or basal parts of stems cut from L. dentata stock plants were placed in Plantmax HT® filled polystyrene foam trays and kept under intermittent mist system for two months. Averages of root number, length of the longest root, fresh and dry root weight, and percentage of rooting were evaluated. Apical cuttings combined 97.9% rooting with an average of 13.2 roots per cutting and basal cuttings 93.7% rooting with 2.98 roots per cutting. Apical cuttings with at least 10 cm in length were considered the most adequate for cutting propagation of L. dentata.
