The paper deals with the study of antioxidant properties of extracts from vine seeds (Vitis vinifera L.) using spectrometric and chromatographic techniques. Ten vine varieties (Cerason, Laurot, Kofranka, Gewürztraminer, Hibernal, Blaufrankisch, Zweigeltrebe, Erilon, Palava, and Welschriesling) obtained from the years 2015, 2016, and 2017 were selected for the study. The antioxidant activity was determined spectrophotometrically using four fundamentally different methods; the content of total polyphenolic compounds was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. In 2015, the content of 14 antioxidants (gallic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, coutaric acid, ferulic acid, fertaric acid, trans-piceid, trans-piceatannol, rutin, quercetin-3-β-d-glucoside, quercitrin, myricetin, catechin, and epicatechin) were studied. The results of the study show the high content of antioxidant components in grape seeds and the differences in content in individual varieties and in individual years.

Tragopogon graminifoliusDC. (TG), Compositae family, is traditionally used for the treatment of various diseases like gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders. The aim of the present study is to standardize extracts from TG used for preparation of different dosage forms in traditional Iranian medicine (TIM) based on phenolic compounds. For this purpose, total phenolic content and some phenolic compounds were determined in ethanolic extracts from aerial part and root of TG by HPLC method. Furthermore, antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH-HPLC methods. Caffeic acid, gallic acid,ρ-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and catechin were detected in root and aerial part of TG.ρ-Coumaric acid (6.357 ± 0.014 mg·g−1) was dominant phenolic compound in aerial part followed by ferulic acid (1.24 ± 0.018 mg·g−1). Also,ρ-coumaric acid (2.685 ± 0.031 mg·g−1) was highly abundant in root, followed by catechin (2.067 ± 0.021 mg·g−1). Antioxidant activity of root extract (460.45 ± 0.78 µg Vit.E.E·mL−1) was better than that of aerial part. Generally, phenolic compounds are one of the major constituents of TG and could be used as markers for standardization of dosage forms prepared from this plant. Also, TG demonstrated significant antioxidant activity using DPPH-HPLC method. Phenolic compounds of TG may be responsible for its marked antioxidant properties.

: We identified and quantified by LC-MS/MS 11 (quercetin, galangin, pinocembrin, kaempferol, vanillin, chrysin, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, trans-ferulic acid, caffeic acid, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester) out of the 21 polyphenolic compounds we looked for in ethanolic (25% and 50%) and aqueous propolis extracts by comparison with standards and literature data.

This study investigated the impact of Parinari curatellifolia peel flour on the nutritional, physical and antioxidant properties of formulated biscuits. Biscuits enriched with 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of Parinari (P). curatellifolia peel flour were formulated and characterised. Thermal, physicochemical, polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant properties of flour and biscuits were determined. The incorporation of P. curatellifolia peel flour significantly increased (p < 0.05) thermal properties (onset, peak and conclusion temperatures) of flour. However, enthalpy of gelatinisation, viscosity and pH of flour samples decreased. Nutritional analysis revealed an increase in ash (0.74% to 2.23%) and crude fibre contents (0.39% to 2.95%) along with an increase of P. curatellifolia peel flour levels. Protein content and carbohydrates decreased while moisture content was insignificantly affected by the addition of P. curatellifolia peel flour. The L*, b* values and whiteness index of formulated biscuits decreased while parameter a* value (10.76 to 21.89) and yellowness index (69.84 to 102.71) decreased. Physical properties such as diameter (3.57 mm to 3.97 mm), spread ratio (2.67 to 3.45) and hardness (1188.13 g to 2432.60 g) increased with the inclusion levels of peel flour while weight and thickness decreased. The inclusion of P. curatellifolia improved the polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of biscuits with values of total flavonoids content ranging from 0.028 to 0.104 mg CE/g, total phenolic content increasing from 20.01 mg to 48.51 mg GAE/g, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) increasing from 108.33 mg to 162.67 mg GAE/g and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) from 48.70% to 94.72%. These results lead to the recommendation of the utilisation of P. curatellifolia peel flour to enhance the nutritional value, polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of bakery products such as biscuits.

Just like in other stone fruits, also in peach trees, the Plum pox virus is commonly known to be the cause of lower yields, worse quality and smaller size of fruits and it also affects the contained substances. The fruits of peach trees infected with the Plum pox virus (PPV) were subjected to various analyses to determine the content of antioxidant activity and overall polyphenolic compounds. The evaluation took place from 2011 to 2012. To conduct this experiment, two cultivars that had been infected by PPV naturally were selected – ‘Royal Glory’ and ‘Symphony’. Antioxidant activity was established using five principally different methods (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, DMPD and Free Radicals). The content of total polyphenolic compounds was established using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The results of these analyses are expressed as the equivalent of gallic acid (GAE) in mg·kg−1. Furthermore, in the period from April to October the intensity of PPV symptoms in blossoms, leaves and fruits was also assessed.It was discovered that as a result of the PPV infection, the content of antioxidant activity as well as of total polyphenols had increased. Average reading of antioxidant activity in the PPV infected fruits had increased by 13.2 % (DPPH), 26.7 % (FRAP), 27.6 % (ABTS), 28.1 % (DMPD), 39.2 % (Free Radicals) and the content of polyphenolic compounds had gone up by about 30.4 % in comparison with the control varieties.

The antioxidant activity (AA) of various extracts of grape marc (Vitis vinifera L.) was studied. Radical absorption activity (RAA) was calculated in reactions with DPPH+ and ABTS•+ radicals and AA in rat liver homogenate by two markers of oxidative stress (OS): contents of thiobarbiturative products and carbonyl groups of proteins. All the extracts showed antioxidant activity. Water-based extract and 96 % ethanol extract obtained via heat bath method were inhibitors of the formation of free radical oxidation of lipids and proteins. 96% ethanol extract is promising for the development of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

This study was conducted to study the influence of plant density and irrigation on the content of phenolic compounds, i.e., phenolic acids and flavonols in cv. ‘Sevilla’ cauliflower curds. Levels of phenolic acids and flavonols were in the range of 3.0–6.2 mg and 25.4–87.8 mg/100 g of dry weight, respectively, depending on plant density and irrigation. Of the phenolic acids, caffeic acid was detected in the highest amount, followed by p-coumaric acid, sinapic acid, gallic acid, and ferulic acid. Of the two flavonols detected, the levels of quercetin were higher than those of kaempferol. The content of the detected phenolic acids (with the exception of ferulic acid) and both flavonols increased with increasing plant density. Furthermore, the concentration of phenolic compounds (with the exception of ferulic acid) was significantly higher under irrigation.
