Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites that are found ubiquitously in plants, fruits, and vegetables. Many studies have shown that regular consumption of these compounds could have a positive effect on our health. The aim of this study was to compare the phytochemical contents of the water extracts from three different plants used as folk remedies in Turkey: Aesculus hippocastanum, Olea europaea, and Hypericum perforatum. A liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) analysis was performed to explore the phenolic profiles. The biological activities of these extracts were also evaluated in terms of their antioxidant activities (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl DPPH, 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid ABTS, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power Assay FRAP, cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity CUPRAC, β-carotene, phosphomolybdenum, and metal chelating) and enzyme inhibitory properties (against acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase). The aqueous extract of H. perforatum showed the highest levels of total phenolic, flavonoid, and saponin contents. Protocatechuic acid, vanillic acid, verbascoside, hesperidin, hyperoside, apigenin 7-hexosides, and quercetin were the most common compounds found in this species. The results confirm that A. hippocastanum, O. europaea, and H. perforatum represent a potential source of natural-derived molecules with positive properties that could be used as valid starting point for new food supplements, and drugs in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries.

Phenolic composition and biological activities of fruit extracts from Italian and AlgerianOlea europaeaL. cultivars were studied. Total phenolic and tannin contents were quantified in the extracts. Moreover 14 different phenolic compounds were identified, and their profiles showed remarkable quantitative differences among analysed extracts. Moreover antioxidant and enzymatic inhibition activities were studied. Three complementary assays were used to measure their antioxidant activities and consequently Relative Antioxidant Capacity Index (RACI) was used to compare and easily describe obtained results. Results showed thatChemlal, between Algerian cultivars, andCoratina, among Italian ones, had the highest RACI values. On the other hand all extracts and the most abundant phenolics were tested for their efficiency to inhibitα-amylase andα-glucosidase enzymes.Leccino, among all analysed cultivars, and luteolin, among identified phenolic compounds, were found to be the best inhibitors ofα-amylase andα-glucosidase enzymes. Results demonstrated thatOlea europaeafruit extracts can represent an important natural source with high antioxidant potential and significantα-amylase andα-glucosidase inhibitory effects.

Oleaster (wild olive tree) by-products represent a renewable and low-cost source of biopolyphenols. Leaf extracts (sylv.OLE) of Algerian oleaster, locally called a’hachad (Olea europaea subsp. europaea var. sylvestris), were applied at 1 and 5% (v/w) to raw Halal minced beef (HMB) in order to test its safety and shelf-life prolongation during retail/display. The total phenolic compound content in the extract was 198.7 ± 3.6 mg gallic acid equivalent. Ten compounds were identified in the sylv.OLE by High Performance Liquid Chromatography/Diode Array Detector (HPLC/DAD), of which oleuropein was the most abundant (43.25%). Samples treated with 5% sylv.OLE had significantly higher antimicrobial and antioxidant effects than those treated with 1% extract (p < 0.05). The addition of sylv.OLE reduced psychrotrophic counts as well as the level of pathogens (Salmonella enterica ser. Enteritidis and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7). A thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) value of 2.42 ± 0.11 was reached throughout six days of retail/display in control samples, while the addition of 5% sylv.OLE reduced TBARS value by 58% (p < 0.05). The presence of sylv.OLE at the tested concentrations did not negatively influence the overall acceptability and bitterness of HMB.

Edible flowers have been used as ingredients because of their biological activities, taste, and overall appearance. This research was aimed to characterize the chemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of the marigold flower (Calendula officinalis L.) extracted with different proportions of water and ethyl alcohol, and the lyophilized extract with higher content of antioxidant compounds was incorporated into an organic yogurt. Results showed that the hydroalcoholic extract (50:50 v/v) presented the highest total phenolic content (TPC), flavonoids, and antioxidant activity (ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total reducing capacity (TRC), and Cu2+/Fe2+ chelating ability). Phenolic acids and flavonoids were quantified in the extract by LC-DAD, while 19 compounds were tentatively identified by ESI-MS/MS. The lyophilized marigold extract (LME) also inhibited 12% of Wistar rat’s brain lipid oxidation in vitro, inhibited α-amylase, and α-glucosidase activities, but showed no cytotoxicity towards cancerous cells (HCT8 and A549). However, marigold flower extract protected human erythrocytes against mechanical stress. When added into an organic yogurt model (0 to 1.5%), LME increased TPC and antioxidant activity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and TRC), and the sensory analysis showed that the organic yogurt had an acceptance of 80.4%. Our results show that the use of LME may be a technological strategy to increase the content of bioactive compounds in yogurts.

Although many scientists have been studying lichens, the bacterial communities among lichens have not been fully explored. In this study, the biological activities of bacterial isolates from Arctic lichen Ochrolechia sp. were screened. Cell cultures were extracted using ethyl acetate, and these cultures were tested for antibacterial and antioxidant activities. To evaluate the antibacterial activities, we carried out a disk diffusion test and minimum inhibitory concentration assay. The inhibition zone diameter (mm) was 8 to 12, and its MIC value ranged from 222.0 to > 1000 μg/ml (control antibiotic ampicillin ranged from 0.31 to 0.58 μg/ml). PAMC26625 (Sphingomonas sp., sequence similarity: 99.108%) showed a high amount of total phenolic and total flavonoid contents within 5 extracts and also exhibited 77.23% and 80.02% in the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl assay and the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) assay, respectively. In the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay, it was determined that PAMC26625 contained a higher amount of ferrous ion [8.72 mM Fe(II)/mg extract] than control ascorbic acid [6.21 mM Fe(II)/mg extract]. Our data indicated that they had potential to be novel sources of antibacterials and antioxidants.

Olive leaf extracts are of special interest due to their proven therapeutic effects. However, they are still considered a by-product of the table olive and the oil industries. In order to learn possible ways of exploiting this waste for health purposes, we investigated the phytochemical profiles and antioxidant activities in the leaves of 15 Italian Olea europaea L. cultivars grown in the same pedoclimatic conditions. The phenolic profiles and amounts of their seven representative compounds were analyzed using HPLC ESI/MS-TOF. The antioxidant activities were determined using three different antioxidant assays (DPPH, ORAC, and superoxide anion scavenging assay). Wide ranges of total phenolic content (11.39–48.62 g GAE kg−1 dry weight) and antioxidant activities (DPPH values: 8.67–29.89 µmol TE mg−1 dry weight, ORAC values: 0.81–4.25 µmol TE mg−1 dry weight, superoxide anion scavenging activity values: 27.66–48.92 µmol TE mg−1 dry weight) were found in the cultivars. In particular, the cultivars Itrana, Apollo, and Maurino, showed a high amount of total phenols and antioxidant activity, and therefore represent a suitable natural source of biological compounds for use in terms of health benefits.

Presentamos en este trabajo la web ‘Etnobotánica de los Países Catalanes’ (https://etnobotanica.iec.cat), una herramienta interactiva para redescubrir el saber popular sobre las plantas. En el momento de hacerse pública, contiene casi 80.000 entradas con nombres de plantas y 55.000 con usos medicinales, y se trabaja para introducir, en los próximos dos años, unas 30.000 entradas de usos alimentarios y unas 30.000 más de otros usos y otras informaciones. Estos datos provienen de más de 1300 entrevistas realizadas a casi 2000 informantes de alrededor de 500 municipios del dominio lingüístico catalán. Los territorios de lengua catalana se encuentran entre las áreas del sur de Europa mejor prospectadas etnobotánicamente, y actualmente sigue habiendo investigaciones activas. La información hasta ahora volcada ha originado un centenar de obras, cuya lista se puede consultar en la misma web. En cuanto a nombres populares, los táxones con mayor diversidad son Zea mays, Achillea millefolium, Cynara cardunculus, Hypericum perforatum y Ceterach officinarum. En cuanto a usos medicinales -los únicos que por el momento figuran-, los táxones más reportados son Thymus vulgaris, Sambucus nigra, Olea europaea subsp. europaea var. europaea, Matricaria recutita y Rosmarinus officinalis. Esta página web es una buena herramienta para el retorno a la sociedad de un saber sobre los patrimonios natural y cultural que de ella proviene, conservándolo y poniéndolo al alcance de las nuevas generaciones y, además, permitirá detectar huecos en la investigación etnoflorística, realizar metanálisis hasta ahora muy raramente hechos en etnobotánica y suministrar información a instituciones y empresas interesadas en desarrollar productos comerciales a base de plantas. Olea europaea L. var. sativa (OESA) preparations are widely used in traditional medicine in the Mediterranean region to prevent and treat different diseases. In this research, olive extracts derived from the leaves of the OESA tree have been screened for antioxidant activity by two methods: the DPPH free radical scavenging assay (DPPH) and the Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. The DPPH assay showed that OESA possesses a stronger antioxidant activity (84%) at 1 mg/mL while the FRAP method showed a strong metal ion chelating activity (90%) at 1 mg/mL. The low IC50 values, obtained by two different methods, implies that OESA has a noticeable effect on scavenging free radicals comparable to standards. During EBV infection, the free radicals increased triggering lipid oxidation. Therefore, the monitoring of the secondary lipid peroxidation products was done by measuring malonaldehyde (MDA) and conjugated dienes (DC). The simultaneous treatment of Raji cells with OESA and TPA, as an inductorof the lytic cycle, generated a significant decrease in MDA levels and DC (p < 0.05). Besides, Raji cells simultaneously exposed to TPA and OESA exhibited a percentage of EBV-positive fluorescence cells lower than TPA treated cells (**** p < 0.0001). This suggests that OESA treatment has a protective effect against EBV lytic cycle induction.
