This research characterizes the kaolinitic clays from Cretaceous–Paleocene lateritic deposits of Terra Alta (south Catalonia) to evaluate their possible applications. The outcrops and quarries belong to the Horta de Sant Joan and Pinell de Brai areas. The chemical composition, mineralogy, rheological behavior, particle size distribution and plasticity are determined. The Fe and Ti4+ contents prevent them from being directly used as raw material for white ceramics. The mineralogy consists of kaolinite with quartz, illite, hematite, and minor K-feldspar and calcite. Most of the area comprises medium plastic clays that are classified as fired clays and can be used as ceramic and construction materials. In Horta de Sant Joan, a kaolinitic-rich level, up to 75 wt % of kaolinite, is highly crystalline with low plasticity and can be classified as flint clay, useful as a refractory clay. The evaluated kaolinitic clays can also be used to obtain a triaxial ceramic when they are mixed with feldspar to act as a fluxing agent and chamotte.

Quality of raw materials, including quartz sand and quartzite, varies from one deposit to another. Furthermore, the material quality determines in which industrial branches it can be used after certain preparation processes. Potential applications of quartz raw materials are: in the construction and refractory industry, ceramics and glass industry, then in metallurgy, foundry and also in production of water treatment filters. Geological investigations of the central Serbia region, in the Rekovac municipality, resulted in identification of occurrence of quartz sand ("Ursula") and quartzite ("Velika Krusevica"). Preliminary laboratory tests and characterization of the quartz sand size fraction -0.63+0.1 mm confirmed the possibility of applying this size fraction in the construction materials industry, while the quartzite can be used in refractory, glass and metallurgy industries. After determining the geological reserve of quartz sand "Ursula" and quartzite "Velika Krusevica", detailed investigations are required. Quality conditions from the aspect of chemical composition and physical properties of quartz sand and quartzite are mostly clearly defined by a special standard for this purpose. On the other hand, there are also application areas where standards does not exist, but users define their quality conditions. This example is with the application of quartz sand in the production of water glass. Chemical composition as well is not always the determining factor for the application of quartz raw material. For example, for quartz sand used for sandblasting, grain form is essential. From the economic analysis point of view, the prices of quartz raw materials vary depending on their chemical and physical properties. After all, what needs to be pointed out is the fact that these raw materials are very widespread in nature and that their exploitation is quite simple. After the raw material is excavated, it is stored and further sieved, washed, dried and processed according to customer requirements. All of these processes are cheaper than preparing, for example, limestone, and significaly cheaper than preparation of metal ores.

A large amount of dust can be produced in iron and steel making process. This paper analysis the chemical composition, particle size distribution and microscopic characteristics of those iron and steel making dust. Some dust with high iron content, some dust with much CaO and some dust with carbon, those indicate that the iron and steel making dust can be used as iron making raw material. But the size of the iron and steel making dust is very small, which will make it harder to deal with those dust.

The physical properties of some Nigerian clays were studied in order to determine their suitability for a variety of industrial applications. From the analysis, the specific gravity of Ukpor and Ahoko clays were 1.89 and 2.26 respectively and the Plasticity Index 26.05% and 22.45%, drying shrinkage was 18.90% and 8.2% and particle size distribution showed that the samples are clays. The results show that the physical properties of the clays are within the specifications for kaolin clays and are suitable for industrial uses.

Представлен сравнительный анализ гранулометрических, органолептических и физико-химических показателей качества порошков из капусты брокколи, полученных конвективным и лиофильным способами сушки из отечественного сорта Тонус и импортного гибрида Маратон F1. По показателям гранулометрического состава исследованные образцы порошков конвективной и лиофильной сушек относятся к грубодисперсным системам. Меньшие значения среднего размера частиц (0,14–0,15 мм) имеют порошки из брокколи гибрида Маратон F1 двух способов сушки. Проведен анализ морфологии частиц порошков из капусты брокколи по характеристикам распределения вытянутости, гладкости и яркости. По гранулометрическому составу и морфологии частиц из порошков капусты брокколи сорта Тонус и гибрида Маратон F1существенных различий не обнаружено. Органолептические показатели – вкус, запах, цвет порошков капусты брокколи сорта Тонус и гибрида Маратон F1соответствовали использованному сырьевому источнику. Содержание белков, жиров и углеводов в порошках, полученных конвективным и лиофильным способами сушки, практически одинаково. Установлена сохранность витамина С в порошках при переработке свежей капусты: сорта Тонус в среднем на 26%, гибрида Маратон F1на 53,5%. Сохранность полифенольных соединений в порошках из брокколи сорта Тонус и гибрида Маратон F1, выработанных двумя способами сушки, составила 57,8–67,8%. Комплексные исследования показали, что порошки из капусты брокколи, выработанные из отечественного и импортного сырья, имеют ценный химический состав, что позволяет отнести их к перспективному продовольственному сырью для использования в технологиях функциональных продуктов питания. The comparative analysis of granulometric, organoleptic and physical and chemical indicators of quality of powders of cabbage of the broccoli received convective and liofilny by ways of drying from a domestic grade the Tonus and an import hybrid Maraton F1is submitted. On indicators of particle size distribution the studied samples of powders of convective and liofilny drying belong to grubodispersny systems. Smaller values of the average size of particles of 0,14–0,15 mm have hybrid broccoli powders Maraton of F1 of two ways of drying. The analysis of morphology of particles of powders of cabbage of broccoli according to characteristics of distribution of elongation, smoothness and brightness is carried out. On particle size distribution and morphology of particles of powders of cabbage of broccoli of a grade the Tonus and a hybrid Maraton F1of essential distinctions isn’t revealed. Organoleptic indicators – taste, a smell, color of powders of cabbage of broccoli of a grade the Tonus and a hybrid Maraton of F1corresponded to the used raw source. Content of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in the powders received convective and liofilny by ways of drying were almost close. The safety of vitamin C in powders when processing fresh cabbage is established: grades the Tonus on average 26%, a hybrid Maraton F1– 53,5%. Safety of polyphenolic connections in grade powders the Tonus and a hybrid Maraton of F1developed on two ways of drying made 57,8–67,8%. Complex researches have shown that the powders of cabbage of broccoli produced from domestic and import raw materials have the valuable chemical composition that allows to carry them to perspective food staples for use in technologies of functional food.

Wastes generated by processing ornamental stones are an increasing environmental problem in Brazil. Recycling alternatives are being investigated for the different types of wastes. The addition into clay ceramic is a possibility as long as the stone waste presents compatible characteristics. Therefore the objective of this work was to characterize a waste obtained from the sawing operation of granite by a steel multi-wire equipment as well as to evaluate its effect on the plasticity of clayey formulations. This characterization was performed in terms of chemical composition, X-ray diffraction and particle size distribution. The results indicated not only similar chemical and physical aspects but also a potential for addition into clay bodies of Campos dos Goytacazes in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by the adjustment of the excessive plasticity of the clay.
