Three novel Gram-positive, aerobic, chemoheterotrophic, motile, non-endospore-forming, orange-pigmented bacteria designated strains T13T, T90T and R8T were isolated from the Tabernas Desert biocrust (Almería, Spain). Cells of the three strains were coccus-shaped and occurred singly, in pairs or clusters. The three strains were oxidase-negative and catalase-positive, and showed a mesophilic, neutrophilic and non-halophilic metabolism. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences, the closest neighbours of strains T13T, T90T and R8T were Kineococcus aurantiacus IFO 15268T, Kineococcus gypseus YIM 121300T and Kineococcus radiotolerans SRS 30216T (98.5%, 97.1% and 97.9% gene sequence similarity, respectively). The genomes were sequenced, and have been deposited in the GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ databases under the accession numbers JAAALL000000000, JAAALM000000000 and JAAALN000000000, respectively, for strains T13T, T90T and R8T. The average nucleotide identity (ANIb) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values confirmed their adscription to three new species within the genus Kineococcus. The genomic G + C content of strains T13T, T90T and R8T ranged from 75.1% to 76.3%. The predominant fatty acid of all three strains was anteiso-C15:0. According to a polyphasic study, strains T13T, T90T and R8T are representatives of three new species in the genus Kineococcus, for which names Kineococcus vitellinus sp. nov. (type strain T13T = CECT 9936T = DSM 110024T), Kineococcus indalonis sp. nov. (type strain T90T = CECT 9938T = DSM 110026T) and Kineococcus siccus sp. nov. (type strain R8T = CECT 9937T = DSM 110025T) are proposed.

A polyphasic study was undertaken to establish the taxonomic position of an isolate, strain DS472T, from soil in Kyoto, Japan. Phylogenetic analysis, based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences, revealed that this strain constitutes a new subline within the genus Rhodococcus, with Rhodococcus yunnanensis YIM 70056T and Rhodococcus fascians DSM 20669T as its nearest phylogenetic neighbours (98.2 and 97.8 % sequence similarity, respectively). DNA–DNA hybridization experiments revealed 36 and 29 % relatedness between the isolate and its phylogenetic relatives, R. yunnanensis and R. fascians, respectively. Chemotaxonomic characteristics, including the major quinone MK-8(H2), predominant fatty acids C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c and 10-methyl C18 : 0, the presence of cell-wall chemotype IV and mycolic acids, were consistent with the properties of members of the genus Rhodococcus. The DNA G+C content was 64.5 mol%. On the basis of both phenotypic and genotypic evidence, strain DS472T represents a novel species of the genus Rhodococcus, for which the name Rhodococcus kyotonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain DS472T (=IAM 15415T=CCTCC AB206088T).

A halotolerant, Gram-negative, rod-shaped and light-red-pigmented bacterium, designated LP51T, was isolated from pond sediment near a hexachlorocyclohexane dumpsite located at Chinhat, Lucknow, India. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain LP51T formed a distinct phyletic clade along with the members of the genus Pontibacter. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to members of the genus Pontibacter ranged from 94.2 to 99.4  %. The cells were motile, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15  :  0 (17.8  %), iso-C15  :  0 3-OH (8.8  %), iso-C17  :  0 3-OH (5.7  %), summed feature 3 (C16  :  1ω7c and/or C16  :  1ω6c; 6.5  %) and summed feature 4 (iso-C17  :  1 I and/or anteiso-C17  :  1 B; 30.7  %). The polar lipid profile of strain LP51T showed the presence of phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminophospholipid, unknown aminolipids, unknown polar lipids and unknown glycolipids. DNA–DNA relatedness of strain LP51T with respect to the most closely related type strain, Pontibacter korlensis X14-1T, was 47.2  %. On the basis of this information, it is proposed that the isolate be assigned to a novel species of the genus Pontibacter, for which the name Pontibacter chinhatensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LP51T ( = CCM 8436T = MCC 2070T).

Two novel vibrio isolates (R-40492T and R-40493T) originating from the zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum in Brazil in 2005 were taxonomically characterized by means of a polyphasic approach comprising multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA), DNA–DNA hybridization (DDH), ΔT m analysis and phenotypic characterization. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that R-40492T and R-40493T fell within the genus Vibrio and were most closely related to each other with 99 % similarity; similarities of these two novel isolates towards Vibrio neptunius LMG 20536T, Vibrio coralliilyticus LMG 20984T, Vibrio nigripulchritudo LMG 3896T, Vibrio sinaloensis LMG 25238T and Vibrio brasiliensis LMG 20546T varied between 97.1 and 98.5 %. DDH experiments showed that the two isolates had less than 15 % relatedness to the phylogenetically most closely related Vibrio species. R-40492T and R-40493T had 55–57 % relatedness to each other. The ΔTm between R-40492T and R-40493T was 6.12 °C. In addition, MLSA of concatenated sequences (16S rRNA, ftsZ, gyrB, recA, rpoA, topA, pyrH and mreB; 6035 bp in length) showed that the two novel isolates formed a separate branch with less than 92 % concatenated gene sequence similarity towards known species of vibrios. Two novel species are proposed to accommodate these novel isolates, namely Vibrio variabilis sp. nov. (type strain, R-40492T = LMG 25438T = CAIM 1454T) and Vibrio maritimus sp. nov. (type strain, R-40493T = LMG 25439T = CAIM 1455T).

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, designated Gsoil 1105T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Pocheon Province in South Korea and characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that the isolate belongs to the order Bacillales, showing the highest level of sequence similarity with respect to Tumebacillus permanentifrigoris Eur1 9.5T (94.6 %). The phylogenetic distances from other described species with validly published names within the order Bacillales were greater than 9.0 %. Strain Gsoil 1105T had a genomic DNA G+C content of 55.6 mol% and menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Gsoil 1105T represents a novel species of the genus Tumebacillus, for which the name Tumebacillus ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 1105T ( = KCTC 13942T  = DSM 18389T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile and coccoid actinobacterium, designated P31T, was isolated from a traditional, fermented seafood. The strain was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. Cells grew in the presence of 0–15.0 % (w/v) NaCl, and at pH 5–10 and 15–37 °C. Major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. Strain P31T contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone. The DNA G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain P31T was 65.2 mol%. A phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain P31T was most closely related to Kocuria kristinae DSM 20032T, with 96.9 % similarity, and these two strains clustered together in constructed phylogenetic trees. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain P31T and K. kristinae DSM 20032T was 21.1 %. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, it is suggested that strain P31T represents a novel species of the genus Kocuria, for which the name Kocuria koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is P31T (=KCTC 19595T=JCM 15915T).

Two non-motile, orange- or yellow-pigmented bacteria, designated strains KYW48T and KYW147T, were isolated from seawater collected from the South Sea, Republic of Korea. Cells of both strains were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids of strain KYW48T were C18 : 1ω7c (35.3 %), summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) (22.7 %), C17 : 1ω6c (19.8 %), C14 : 0 2-OH (7.4 %) and C16 : 0 (5.9 %), and those of strain KYW147T were C18 : 1ω7c (36.0 %), summed feature 3 (18.3 %), C16 : 0 (14.7 %), 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c (10.7 %), C16 : 0 2-OH (9.1 %) and C18 : 1ω9c (8.0 %). The predominant isoprenoid quinone of both strains was ubiquinone 10 (Q-10). The DNA G+C contents of strains KYW48T and KYW147T were 63.8 and 67.2 mol%, respectively. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains KYW48T and KYW147T were grouped with the members of the family Erythrobacteraceae and formed a distinct clade with the members of the genus Altererythrobacter (<95.7 % sequence similarity). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, the novel species Altererythrobacter namhicola sp. nov. (type strain KYW48T  = KCTC 22736T  = JCM 16345T) and Altererythrobacter aestuarii sp. nov. (type strain KYW147T  = KCTC 22735T  = JCM 16339T) are proposed.

In this study, a novel betaproteobacterium, strain DPN7T, was isolated under mesophilic conditions from compost because of its capacity to utilize the organic disulfide 3,3′-dithiodipropionic acid. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain DPN7T revealed 98.5 % similarity to that of Tetrathiobacter kashmirensis LMG 22695T. Values for sequence similarity to members of the genera Alcaligenes, Castellaniella and Taylorella, the nearest neighbours of the genus Tetrathiobacter, were about 95 % or less. The DNA G+C content of strain DPN7T was 55.1 mol%. The level of DNA–DNA hybridization between strain DPN7T and T. kashmirensis LMG 22695T was 41 %, whereas it was much lower between strain DPN7T and Alcaligenes faecalis LMG 1229T (7 %) or Castellaniella defragrans LMG 18538T (5 %). This genotypic divergence was supported by differences in biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics. For this reason, and because of the differences in the protein and fatty acid profiles, strain DPN7T should be classified within a novel species of Tetrathiobacter, for which the name Tetrathiobacter mimigardefordensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain DPN7T (=DSM 17166T=LMG 22922T).

A novel, moderately halophilic bacterium belonging to the genus Salinicoccus was isolated from crabs preserved in soy sauce: a traditional Korean fermented seafood. Colonies of strain CrmT were ivory and the cells were non-motile, Gram-positive cocci. The organism was non-sporulating, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The major fatty acids of strain CrmT were iso-C15 : 0 (22.0 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (40.6 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (12.1 %). The cell wall peptidoglycan contained lysine and glycine, and the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-6. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. Strain CrmT was closely related to the type strain of Salinicoccus halodurans, with which it shared 96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains CrmT and S. halodurans DSM 19336T was 7.6 %. Based on phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain CrmT should be classified as a novel species within the genus Salinicoccus, for which the name Salinicoccus carnicancri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CrmT (=KCTC 13301T =JCM 15796T).

A Gram-positive, yellowish bacterium strain AK-1Twas isolated from soil sample collected from peanut (Arachis hypogaea) crop field and studied by using a polyphasic approach. The organism had morphological and chemotaxonomic properties consistent with its classification in the genusAgromyces. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain AK-1Twas closely related toAgromyces aurantiacus(98.6%) followed byAgromyces soli(98.3%),Agromyces tropicus(97.6%),Agromyces ulmi(97.3%),Agromyces flavus(97.2%), andAgromyces italicus(97.0%), whereas the sequence similarity values with respect to the otherAgromycesspecies with validly published names were between 95.3 and 96.7 %. However, the DNA-DNA hybridization values obtained between strain AK-1Tand other related strains were well below the threshold that is required for the proposal of a novel species. The DNAG+Ccontent of the strain is 71.8 mol%. The above data in combination with the phenotypic distinctiveness of AK-1Tclearly indicate that the strain represents a novel species, for which the nameAgromyces arachidissp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AK-1T(=MTCC 10524T= JCM 19251T).
