Phagnalon saxatile subsp. saxatile is a wild species widespread in Algeria which is utilized for medicinal purposes as analgesic and anticholesterolemic. However, information is still scarce regarding its phytochemical content. The objective of this study was to identify and quantify the phenolic compounds from different extracts of its leafy stems. For this purpose, the effects of four extracting solvents were investigated on the content of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of this plant. The extracts prepared with polar solvents (methanol and water) contained higher amounts of phenolic compounds and showed better antioxidant activity than the extracts with apolar solvents (hexane, dichloromethane). The methanolic extract, richest in total phenolic and total flavonoid, had significant antioxidant activity as regarded by DPPH° scavenging capacity (IC50 of 5.5 µg/mL), ABTS+° scavenging capacity (IC50 of 63.8 µg/mL) and inhibition of oxidation of linoleic acid (IC50 of 22.7 µg/mL), when compared to synthetic antioxidants. Chlorogenic acids and several flavonoids were identified and quantified by UPLC-DAD-MSn. The di-O-caffeoylquinic acids isomers were the most concentrated phenolics (25.4 mg/g DW) in the methanolic extract.

The contents, composition and radical scavenging capacity of phenolic compounds from parsnips of various root weights grown in Serbia were examined. The content of phenolic compounds depended on root size, and the highest content was in the group where the samples with the lowest root size were grouped. The content of phenolic compounds varied from 109.7 to 125.3 μmol of chlorogenic acid per g dry extract, i.e.5470.8 to 6245.1 mg per kg fresh weight. Among the identified compounds were quercetin, kaempferol, apigenin and genkwanin glucosides and hydroxycinnamic and caffeoylshikimic acids. The highest antioxidant capacity was found for the group with the lowest root weight; the IC50 values ranged from 1.59 to 2.49 mg mL–1. There was positive correlation between the total phenolic content and scavenging capacity, and the kaempferol glucosides content could be an indicator of DPPH scavenging capacity of parsnip roots.

Background:Propolis contains compounds with antibacterial and antioxidant capacities, such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial and antioxidant effects of six propolis samples from northern Morocco and to determine their content of polyphenols and flavonoids.Methods:The total polyphenols and flavonoids of Ethanol Extracts (EEP) were evaluated by colorimetric assays. To test the antibacterial activity, the well diffusion and micro-dilution methods were adopted. The kinetic of bacterial growth in the presence of EEP was tested. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three techniques: reducing power, β-carotene bleaching test, and DPPH scavenging capacity assay.Results:The EEPs were found to have high total phenolic content (65.09 - 122.00 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (41.95 - 50.44 mg QE/g). The screening of the antibacterial activity showed that all tested bacteria were sensitive to EEP except Escherichia coli. The inhibitory zones varied from 11.50 ± 0.70 to 32.00 ± 0.70 mm, and MIC and MBC ranged from 0.07 to 5 mg/mL and 0.07 to >5 mg/mL, respectively. The antioxidant activity was proportional to the phenolic content of propolis. The IC50 varied from 48.70 to 156.00 mg/mL and the RAA% ranged from 75.07 to 96.68 %.

Thymelaea hirsuta  is a medicinal plant, belonging to the genus Thymelaea (Thymelaeaceae) widely used in Mediterranean countries especially in Algeria. In this study, we have evaluated the total polyphenols and flavonoids contents of methanolic and aqueous extracts of Leaves and flowers of Thymelaea hirsuta as well as its antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2'2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl) and β-carotene /linoleic acid bleaching assays. The yield of the methanolic and aqueous extract was 11, 55% and 13, 25% respectively. The total polyphenols content of the methanolic extract was 295, 22 µg GAE/ mg extract and flavonoids was 09, 40 µg QE/mg and 26, 42 µg RE/ mg extract. The total polyphenols content of the aqueous extract was 57, 95 µg GAE/ mg extract and flavonoids was 4.59 µg QE/ mg and 10.66 µg RE/ mg extract. In the DPPH assay, methanolic extract showed the higher scavenging capacity (IC50 = 0.03 ± 0.004 mg/ml), followed by aqueous extract with IC50 of 0.275 ± 0.019 mg/ml. In the test of β-carotene /linoleic acid, the percentage of inhibition was 39.1±1.33% for the aqueous extract and 41.05±2.72% for methanolic extract. Pulp and seeds from four varieties of black goji and two varieties of red goji with different geographical origins were examined for their total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), condensed tannin content (CTT), monomeric anthocyanin content (MAC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging capacity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) using colorimetric methods. Contribution rates of pulp and seed to phytochemical contents and overall antioxidant capacities of whole fruits were calculated for each parameter. It was observed that most of the phytochemicals and antioxidant activities were predominantly contributed by the pulp in all six varieties. Boiling led to significant (p< 0.05) losses in the phytochemical content and antioxidant capacity. The average MAC value in black goji was significantly (p< 0.05) higher than that observed for red goji.

Sementes, folhas e frutos de algumas espécies do gênero Garcinia são amplamente utilizadas em várias partes do mundo para fins medicinais, e atualmente, inúmeros compostos fitoquímicos tem sido descritos neste gênero com potenciais efeitos antioxidantes e anti-inflamatórios. O objetivo deste estudo foi quantificar compostos fenólicos, e outros fitoquímicos, e atividade antioxidante das folhas e frutos da espécie Garcinia Cochinchinensis Choisy, conhecida como mangostão amarelo ou falso mangostão. Os frutos e as folhas utilizados no experimento foram obtidos do pomar da Fatec (Faculdade de Tecnologia) de Pompéia/SP, e a identificação da planta foi feita no Herbário do Departamento de Biologia da FFCLRP-USP. Foram realizadas análises de compostos fenólicos totais, flavonoides, carotenóides, antocianinas, pigmentos clorofila A e B, e atividade antioxidante por DPPH nas folhas e frutos. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com três repetições, e os dados foram submetidos a análise de variância (ANOVA) e teste Tukey usando o programa Sisvar (p<0,05). Os resultados revelaram valores expressivos de compostos fenólicos totais na polpa (469,6 ± 114,9 mg ácido gálico 100g-1) e nas folhas (3739,7 ± 310,5 mg ácido gálico 100g-1) da G. Cochinchinensis Choisy, quando comparados à outras espécies de Garcinia. As folhas apresentaram teores significativamente superiores de flavonoides (665,1 ± 122,9 mg de rutina 100g-1 e 104,6 ± 19,3 mg de quercetina 100g-1), quando comparados à polpa dos frutos (89,6 ± 14,7 mg de rutina 100g-1 e 14,9 ± 2,43 mg de quercetina 100g-1), porém a atividade antioxidante pelo radical DPPH foi maior nos frutos (90,6 ± 2,52 %). Diferenças significativas foram também observadas entre os frutos e as folhas para os teores de carotenoides, antocianinas e pigmentos clorofila A e B, sendo os teores destes fitoquímicos mais expressivos nas folhas do mangostão amarelo. Os teores de antocianinas foram baixos quando comparados a outros frutos do gênero Garcinia. Analyzes of total phenolic compounds, flavonoids, carotenoids, anthocyanins, chlorophyll A and B pigments, and antioxidant activity by DPPH in leaves and fruits were performed. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design with three replicates, and the data was  submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test using Sisvar program (p <0.05). Significant differences on of carotenoids, anthocyanins and chlorophyll A and B pigments were also observed between fruits and leaves.  Yellow mangosteen leaves showed the most expressive phytochemical content. The levels of anthocyanins were low compared to other fruits of the Garcinia genus. The fruits and leaves of Garcinia Cochinchinensis Choisy present expressive concentrations of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, in addition, a high total antioxidant activity.KEYWORDS: Yellow mangosteen, gallic acid, flavonoids, antioxidant.

Abstract BackgroundHibiscus sabdariffa is popularly known as food and herbal drink with numerous health benefits. The phytochemical compounds present in Hibiscus sabdariffa calyces are important in developing nutraceutical foods. In this study hibiscus jam and yoghurt were produced from dried hibiscus calyces’ powder.MethodsThe phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of these products were then analysed in terms of Total phenolic content (TPC), Total flavonoid content (TFC), Condensed tannins (CT) and DPPH Scavenging activity.ResultsThe results showed the presence of all phytochemical compounds (TPC, TFC, CT) and antioxidant activity in all Hibiscus sabdariffa products. The hibiscus calyces powder showed the highest phytochemical contents of 35.24 mg GAE. g -1 , 0.91 mg QE. g -1 , 2.85 mg CAE. g -1 and 48.2 % inhibition for TPC, TFC, CT and DPPH Scavenging activity, respectively. Hibiscus jam and Hibiscus yoghurt had phytochemical contents of 6.44 and 4.81 mg GAE. g -1 , 0.19 & 0.24 mg QE. g -1 , 1.40 & 0.66 mg CAE. g -1 and 26.2 & 39.3 % inhibition for TPC, TFC, TC and DPPH Scavenging activity, respectively.ConclusionsThe results of the current study showed that there is potential in using Hibiscus sabdariffa to develop functional foods.

The study compared the content of eight phenolic acids and four flavonoids and the antioxidant activity of six Polish varietal honeys. An attempt was also made to determine the correlations between the antioxidant parameters of the honeys and their polyphenol profile using principal component analysis. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity (ABTS) and reduction capacity (FRAP) were determined spectrophotometrically, and the phenolic compounds were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The buckwheat honeys showed the strongest antioxidant activity, most likely because they had the highest concentrations of total phenols, total flavonoids, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, vanillic acid and chrysin. The principal component analysis (PCA) of the data showed significant relationships between the botanic origin of the honey, the total content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids and the antioxidant activity of the six Polish varietal honeys. The strongest, significant correlations were shown for parameters of antioxidant activity and TPC, TFC, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid and p-coumaric acid. Analysis of four principal components (explaining 86.9% of the total variance), as a classification tool, confirmed the distinctiveness of the Polish honeys in terms of their antioxidant activity and content of phenolic compounds.

AbstractCoconut water (Cocos nucifera L.) from fruits of two ripening stages (green and mature) was used to perform microwave heat treatments. Three different heating conditions with maximum temperatures of 70, 80 and 90 °C were tested in three holding times (0, 2 and 4 min). The Total Phenolic Content (TPC) using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and ABTS radical scavenging capacity were evaluated for each combination of coconut fruit age, heating temperature and holding time. It was observed that green coconut water exhibited significant differences (p < 0.05) compared to mature coconuts in terms of TPC (46.03 and 69.16 mg GAE/L, respectively) and ABTS radical scavenging capacity (422.31 and 549.1 μmol TE/L, respectively). An increase in TPC (up to 23%) and antioxidant activity (up to 19%) was also observed with increasing temperature in the range of 70–90 °C. Green coconut water showed the largest increase in both TPC and antioxidant activity.

Abstract Ilex paraguariensis, commonly known as yerba mate, is a tree species native to South America. Its commercial value is due to the manufacturing of teas, with potential also in the pharmacological and cosmetic industries. Vegetative propagation of yerba mate is considered an innovation to the traditional production systems based on sexual propagation. The present study aimed to evaluate the rhizogenic potential and chemical attributes of mini-cuttings from 15 yerba mate genotypes, as well as to verify the correlation between phytochemical and rooting-related variables. Mini-cuttings were collected from a pre-existing mini-clonal hedge and the experimental design was completely randomized, with 15 treatments (genotypes), four replications and 10 mini-cuttings per plot. After 120 days, mini-cuttings were assessed regarding rooting, mortality, callogenesis and leaf retention percentages, percentage of mini-cuttings with both calluses and roots, number of roots and average root length. At the time of collection, subsamples from each plot were used for phytochemical analyses including total phenolic compounds, protein, caffeine and theobromine contents and antioxidant activity. Rooting percentages ranged from 5 to 72.5%, with significant variation among genotypes. Adventitious rooting and phytochemical profile of yerba mate mini-cuttings are genotype-dependent. Leaf retention is a relevant factor in the rooting of yerba mate mini-cuttings and the levels of total phenolic compounds, antioxidants and theobromine present in mini-cuttings are negatively correlated components to Ilex paraguariensis adventitious rooting.
