In this paper, the effect of heat treatment (solution treatment and artificial aging) on the microstructure and properties of as-cast Al5Si1Cu0.5Mg aluminum alloy and its composite reinforced with 1.5 wt.% SiC particles was studied. The results showed that at 520 °C the optimal solution time for the aluminum alloy and its composite is 9 h and 6 h, respectively. After solution treatment, the microstructure of these two materials consists of a uniform distribution of nearly spherical eutectic Si and skeletal γ phase, furthermore, the composite eutectic Si phase is smaller and γ phase is more dispersed. After artificial aging at 175 °C for 6 h, the microstructure of the composite is more dispersed and finer than that of the aluminum alloy on the whole and Al2Cu is precipitated. After heat treatment, the microhardness, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation of the aluminum alloy and its composite are higher than those of the as-casts. At the same time, the morphology of tensile fracture surface changes very much from a large area of cleavage plane to a large number of dimples and the tearing ridges become thicker for both the aluminum alloy and its composite.

Heat treatment is widely used to improve the properties of Al–Si–Mg alloys and its outcomes are influenced by the parameters applied during the treatment. This study describes the effect of the solution and artificial aging treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of die-cast Al–Si–Mg alloys. The microstructure of the as-cast Al–Si–Mg alloy was mainly composed of α-Al, complex needle-type eutectic Si particles, Mg2Si, and α-AlFeMn. The complex needle-type eutectic Si particles disintegrated into spheroidal morphologies, while the Mg2Si was dissolved due to the solid solution treatment. The maximum yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) values were 126.06 and 245.90 MPa at 520 °C after 90 min of solution heat treatment, respectively. Although the YS and UTS values of the Al–Si–Mg alloys reduced due to the solution treatment, the elongation (EL) of the solid solution heat-treated Al–Si–Mg alloys was improved in comparison to that of the as-cast Al–Si–Mg alloy. The maximum YS and UTS of 239.50 and 290.93 MPa were obtained after performing artificial aging at 180 °C for 180 min, respectively. However, the EL of the aging heat-treated alloy was reduced by a minimal value.

This study aims to develop the mechanical properties of the Al6Si2Cu aluminum alloy through the double-solution treatment. In addition to the Al matrix, large amounts of coarse eutectic Si, Al2Cu intermetallic, and Fe-rich phases were generated through thermo-calc simulation in agreement with the equilibrium phases. The eutectic Si phase is fragmented and spheroidized by the solution treatment as the heat treatment temperature and time increase. The Al2Cu intermetallic phase is dissolved into the Al matrix, resulting in an increase in both strength and elongation. The second-step solution temperature at 525 °C should be an optimum condition for enhancing the mechanical properties of the Al6Si2Cu aluminum alloy.

AbstractFriction stir welded (FSWed) joints of aluminum alloys exhibited a hardness drop in both the advancing side (AS) and retreating side (RS) of the thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) due to the thermal cycle involved in the FSW process. In this investigation, an attempt has been made to overcome this problem by post weld heat treatment (PWHT) methods. FSW butt (FSWB) joints of Al-Cu (AA2014-T6) alloy were PWHT by two methods such as simple artificial aging (AA) and solution treatment followed by artificial aging (STA). Of these two treatments, STA was found to be more beneficial than the simple aging treatment to improve the tensile properties of the FSW joints of AA2014 aluminum alloy.

In the present study, the influence of the initial heat-treatment conditions on the artificial aging behavior after conventional linear extrusion at room temperature was investigated for the precipitation hardening of a 6056 aluminum alloy. A solution-annealed condition was systematically compared to naturally-aged and pre-aged conditions. Differential scanning calorimetry was used for analyzing the precipitation sequence and its dependence on the initial heat treatment. The natural aging behavior prior to extrusion and the artificial aging behavior after extrusion were determined by microhardness measurements as a function of the aging time. Furthermore, the microstructure, dependent on the induced strain, was investigated using optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. As a result of pre-aging, following a solid-solution treatment, the formation of stable room-temperature clusters was suppressed and natural aging was inhibited. The artificial aging response after extrusion was significantly enhanced by pre-aging, and the achieved hardness and strength were significantly higher when compared with the equally processed solution-annealed or naturally-aged conditions.

In this paper, based on the liquid forging part flange LY12, the influence of heat treatment on the organization and performance of the liquid forging part was studied through microstructure, mechanical properties and tensile fracture surface analysis methods, this article also has some guiding significance to the formulation of the best liquid forging process parameters. The results show that the sample after natural aging which mechanics performance is best, and grain is relatively small; the latter two that after artificial aging are relatively poor. With the extension of artificial aging time, the mechanical properties and the organization has a descending trend.

It is the objective of this study to investigate the effect of ECAP processing and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of the UFG 7075 alloy. Also the effect of post ECAP heat treatment is investigated. The alloy is processed by ECAP after annealing as well as solution treatment to produce an UFG structure. Furthermore mechanical properties and their variations during annealing and aging are investigated. The hardness of the pre-ECAP annealed and the pre-ECAP solutionised 7075 aluminum alloy has increased significantly compared with that of the CG sample. Also hardness of ECAPed specimen has not experienced significant changes in post-ECAP heat treatment and indicated that the alloy had approximately good thermal stability.

Cast aluminum alloy 354 is used extensively for production of critical automobile components, owing to its excellent castability and attractive combination of mechanical properties after heat-treatment. With the advent of higher performance engines, there has been a steady demand to further improve the mechanical behavior of the castings made of the alloy, among others, through improvements in processing. The present study explores the possibility of improving tensile properties of the alloy by adopting certain non-conventional aging treatments. The non-conventional treatments include aging cycles similar to T6I4 and T6I6 referred to in the published literature, artificial aging in two steps instead of in single step and artificial aging preceded by various natural aging times. The results show that none of these non-conventional treatments leads to improvement of all tensile properties compared to the standard T61 treatment. Significant hardening takes place in the alloy due to natural aging. Changing the time of natural aging preceding artificial aging was found to have little effect on tensile properties.

This manuscript investigates the Fabrication and Microstructure of Automotive Brake Rotor Made of AlSi-SiC Composites. This work is oriented toward fabrication of automotive brake rotors from Al-9Si and Al-12Si reinforced with 10 and 20% SiC particles using stir-casting method. The brake rotors were subjected to heat treatment. Aging behavior showed that hardness increased with the addition of SiC reinforcements by 104%, comparing to solution treatment condition. Also, the addition of SiC particles accelerates formation of precipitates. Microstructure of brake rotors made of composite revealed uniform distribution of SiC particles, primary phase (⍺-Al) and modified eutectic Si. EDX analysis showed the presence of Al, Mg and O at the interface between matrix and SiC particles.

Fatigue behavior of A356 aluminum alloy for motorcycle rim was experimentally investigated based on T6 heat treatment and artificial aging. The high speed of 1,100 rpm from centrifugal casting was used in this study. The pouring temperature at 750 °C was employed and the preheated temperature at 250 °C was applied on the mold. The solution heat treatment of the sample was conducted for 4 hours at 540 o C before it immersed into the water for rapid cooling at room temperature. This step followed by natural aging treatment at 30 °C and artificial aging treatment at 150 °C, 175 °C, and 200 °C for 2 hours, respectively. It is found that increasing centrifugal casting speed into 1,100 rpm combined with heat treatment and artificial aging temperature can significantly increase not only its mechanical properties but also the fatigue life of motorcycle wheel made of A356 aluminum alloy. This experiment proved that the lowest fatigue crack growth rate obtained with this method was at temperature of 175°C.

Three different aging treatments including single-aging, delayed-aging, and pre-aging were carried out on 6082 extruded profiles after solution heat treatment, then their hardness, tensile strength, and microstructure were tested. The experimental results reveal that the properties and microstructure changes during single-aging. Based on this, the negative effects of room temperature delay and the results of short-term pre-aging treatments used in the experiment to improve this phenomenon have been concluded.
