A transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling approach was used to study the complex multi-phase flow in an argon-stirred industrial scale ladle with a nominal capacity of 150 tons. During the stirring process, when gas was injected through the porous plug from the bottom into the steel bath, it breaks up into bubbles and infringes the slag layer creating an open-eye. The volume of fluid model was used to investigate the open-eye formation process in the simulations. In the numerical simulations, the open-eye area changed from 0.7 to 2.24 m2 with the increment of argon flow rate from 200 to 500 NL/min for slag layer thickness of 40 cm. Furthermore, the influence of slag layer height on the open-eye area was investigated. An argon flow rate of 200 NL/min was able to break the slag layer for slag layer height of 40 cm, and the open-eye formation was not possible for the same flow rate when the slag layer height was elevated from 40 to 55 cm. The numerical simulation results were validated against industrial measurements carried out at Outokumpu Stainless located in Tornio, Finland. The numerical simulation results of dynamics and time-averages of the slag area showed a good agreement when compared to the industrial measurements. To conclude, it is necessary to define gas flow rate based on the slag layer height to have an open-eye suitable for alloying.

AbstractThe influences of loose gas on gas-solid flows in a large-scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB) gasification reactor were investigated using full-loop numerical simulation. The two-fluid model was coupled with the QC-energy minimization in multi-scale theory (EMMS) gas-solid drag model to simulate the fluidization in the CFB reactor. Effects of the loose gas flow rate, Q, on the solid mass circulation rate and the cyclone separation efficiency were analyzed. The study found different effects depending on Q: First, the particles in the loop seal and the standpipe tended to become more densely packed with decreasing loose gas flow rate, leading to the reduction in the overall circulation rate. The minimum Q that can affect the solid mass circulation rate is about 2.5% of the fluidized gas flow rate. Second, the sealing gas capability of the particles is enhanced as the loose gas flow rate decreases, which reduces the gas leakage into the cyclones and improves their separation efficiency. The best loose gas flow rates are equal to 2.5% of the fluidized gas flow rate at the various supply positions. In addition, the cyclone separation efficiency is correlated with the gas leakage to predict the separation efficiency during industrial operation.

Titanium dioxide coatings were deposited by utilizing atmospheric plasma-spraying system. The agglomerated P25/20 nano-powder and different spraying parameters (e.g., Argon flow rate and spray distance) were used to determine their influences on the microstructure, crystalline structure, photo-absorption, and photo-catalytic performance of the coatings. The microstructure and phases of as-sprayed TiO 2 coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscope SEM and X-ray diffraction, respectively. Surface characteristics were investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared. Photo-catalytic efficiency of the elaborated samples was also determined in an environmental test chamber set-up and evaluated from the conversion rate of ethanol. The photo-absorption was determined by UV–Vis spectrophotometer. The as-sprayed TiO2 coating was photo-catalytically reactive for the degradation of ethanol. The photo-catalytic activity was influenced by spray conditions. It is found that the photo-catalytic activity is significantly influenced by anatase content, surface area, and surface state. The results showed that the argon flow rate has an influence on the microstructure, anatase content, and photo-catalytic activity of the TiO 2 coatings.

Abstract Perforation is the final stage in well completion that helps to connect reservoir formations to wellbores during hydrocarbon production. The drilling perforation technique maximizes the reservoir productivity index by minimizing damage. This can be best accomplished by attaining a better understanding of fluid flows that occur in the near-wellbore region during oil and gas operations. The present work aims to enhance oil recovery by modelling a two-phase flow through the near-wellbore region, thereby expanding industry knowledge about well performance. An experimental procedure was conducted to investigate the behavior of two-phase flow through a cylindrical perforation tunnel. Statistical analysis was coupled with numerical simulation to expand the investigation of fluid flow in the near-wellbore region that cannot be obtained experimentally. The statistical analysis investigated the effect of several parameters, including the liquid and gas flow rate, liquid viscosity, permeability, and porosity, on the injection build-up pressure and the time needed to reach a steady-state flow condition. Design-Expert® Design of Experiments (DoE) software was used to determine the numerical simulation runs using the ANOVA analysis with a Box-Behnken Design (BBD) model and ANSYS-FLUENT was used to analyses the numerical simulation of the porous media tunnel by applying the volume of fluid method (VOF). The experimental data were validated to the numerical results, and the comparison of results was in good agreement. The numerical and statistical analysis demonstrated each investigated parameter’s effect. The permeability, flow rate, and viscosity of the liquid significantly affect the injection pressure build-up profile, and porosity and gas flow rate substantially affect the time required to attain steady-state conditions. In addition, two correlations obtained from the statistical analysis can be used to predict the injection build-up pressure and the required time to reach steady state for different scenarios. This work will contribute to the clarification and understanding of the behavior of multiphase flow in the near-wellbore region.

Precise control of the flow rate of fluids stored in multiple tank systems is an important task in process industries. On this reason coupled tanks are considered popular paradigms in studies because they form strongly nonlinear systems that challenges the controller designers to develop various approaches. In this paper the application of a novel, Fixed Point Iteration (FPI)-based technique is reported to control the fluid level in a “lower tank” that is fed by the egress of an “upper” one. The control signal is the ingress rate at the upper tank. Numerical simulation results obtained by the use of simple sequential Julia code with Euler integration are presented to illustrate the efficiency of this approach.

The tar decomposition of low-pressure ejection type burner was researched. The burner used software to simulate and analyse impact of the nozzle diameter d, the gas flow rate V and the distance of the nozzle to the wall L on tar cracking. The orthogonal test were used for design parameters d, V and L, the optimization values of these three parameters were carried out, and experimental method was used for test the numerical simulation results. Numerical simulation and experimental results showed that the greatest impact on tar cracking is the nozzle diameter d, the minor effect is the distance of the nozzle to the wall L and the weakest effect is the gas flow rate V, and when the nozzle diameter d=4 mm, the distance L=18 mm and the gas flow rate V=0.10 m3/h, the tar cracking is the most efficiency.

Argon stirring is one of the most widely used metallurgical methods in the secondary refining process as it is economical and easy, and also an important refining method in clean steel production. Aiming at the issue of poor homogeneity of composition and temperature of a bottom argon blowing ladle molten steel in a Chinese steel mill, a 1:5 water model for 110 t ladle was established, and the mixing time and interface slag entrainment under the different conditions of injection modes, flow rates and top slag thicknesses were investigated. The flow dynamics of argon plume in steel ladle was also discussed. The results show that, as the bottom blowing argon flow rate increases, the mixing time of ladle decreases; the depth of slag entrapment increases with the argon flow rate and slag thickness; the area of slag eyes decreases with the decrease of the argon flow rate and increase of slag thickness. The optimum argon flow rate is between 36–42 m3/h, and the double porous plugs injection mode should be adopted at this time.

The process of dimensional fused silica etching was offered. The production process of molycoat by magnetron sputtering of molybdenum target in inert gas (Argon) on vacuum distillation unit (NIKA-2012 TN) was examined. The coat quality (delamination, discontinuity) was analyzed; the influence of the first kind internal strains on the type of the observed defects was determined. The research was conducted by means of microscopic and X-ray diffraction analysis. It has been established that the internal strain value in the coat depends on the sputtering gas (Argon) flow rate, and, consequently, its pressure in the magnetron system for molybdenum sputtering. Zero stresses are registered under Argon's flow rate, which is 7.5 L/h. Influence of internal stresses level in the barrier coating on the quality of etching dimple.

In the process of bottom argon blowing large argon flow rate can cause vigorous fluctuations on the surface of the molten steel and splash and reoxidize the molten steel, making the slag rolled into the steel slag, also causing the erosion of the ladle lining refractories. A 1:7 ratio ladle water model system of 150 ton ladle was established from the similarity theory in the lab. Study and analyze the effects of the inserting depth and diameter of immersed tube and bottom blowing flow rate on the fluctuation of the surface of liquid steel. Results show that the fluctuations on the surface of steel can be limited effectively by changing the diameter and inserted depth of immersed tube when selecting a larger flow rate of bottom blowing, which improve the mixing effect of liquid steel.

The gas flow in the cold storage plays a very important role in the effect of cold storages of procambarus clarkii. Only the reasonable gas flow ensures the uniform temperature field.The paper uses the technique of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to conduct the numerical simulation of the flow field and finds out the law of the distribution of the temperature field,on the basis of which the numerical simulation of non steady state of the freezing process of the frozen products is carried out.The experiments prove that the simulation results can better reflect the reality,and show that CFD tools can play an important role in the design and optimization of cold storages.

The results studies influence physicochemical properties and thickness cover slag, formed during ladle desulfurization pig iron by blowing a mixture of lime and magnesium, features formation a breaker on the surface bath and the level of metal losses with emissions outside ladle from this zone are presented. The necessity creating conditions for ensuring height breaker, which would not exceed thickness slag layer on the surface bath, has been substantiated. Using results of the high-temperature simulation blowing the cast iron melt with a neutral gas supplied through the nozzles tips stationary and rotating submersible lances, features development of counter waves and metal splashes in the absence and during formation slag cover with thickness of 30—80 mm on the surface bath are determined. The features change in the height and area breakers are determined depending on the gas flow rate for blowing bath and thickness slag. Based on the analysis results low-temperature modeling bath blowing, scientific ideas about the combined effect of the bath blowing intensity, speed of rotation submerged lance and thickness slag layer on the diameter bubbling zone, gas saturation of the bath and features wave formation on its surface in the slag-free zone were further developed (so-called «eye»). The nature relationship between length of the gas jet from lance nozzle, diameter «eye», and geometric parameters breaker has been established. It is shown that dependence profile breaker on speed of rotation lance and thickness slag layer is nonlinear. So, blowing bath through tip of a rotating lance with one nozzle at 240 rpm. with a gas flow rate of 2.2 l/min. creates conditions for raising top breaker to a height that is 33 % higher than the current thickness slag layer and contributes to the intensification formation of waves and bursts on the surface bath. With a decrease in the gas flow rate to 1.0 l/min., Under other unchanged conditions, height breaker is already 2/3 of the height slag layer, and as thickness slag decreases proportionally decreases. The smallest, recorded in the experiments, relative height breaker was 33.3% of the slag thickness at a lance rotation speed in the range of 90—120 rpm. Mathematical models are proposed that are suitable for calculating height breakers depending on the thickness slag layer, speed of rotation lance and intensity of gas injection into the bath. Taking into account established mutually opposite effect thickness of the cover slag layer and speed of rotation submerged lance on the «eye» area and height of the breaker, it is advisable to continue search for ways to improve design tip submerged lance and slag mode of ladle desulfurization.
