Frequency is an important factor influencing the fatigue behavior. Regarding to the dwell fatigue, it corresponds to the effect of rise and fall time, which is also an important issue especially for the safety evaluation of structure parts under dwell fatigue loading, such as the engines of aircrafts and the pressure hulls of deep-sea submersibles. In this paper, the effect of rise and fall time (2 s, 20 s, 110 s, and 200 s) on the dwell fatigue behavior is investigated for a high strength titanium alloy Ti-6Al-2Sn-2Zr-3Mo-X with basket-weave microstructure. It is shown that the dwell fatigue life decreases with increasing the rise and fall time, which could be correlated by a linear relation in log–log scale for both the specimen with circular cross section and the specimen with square cross section. The rise and fall time has no influence on the crack initiation mechanism by the scanning electron microscope observation. The cracks initiate from the specimen surface and all the fracture surfaces present multiple crack initiation sites. Moreover, the facet characteristic is observed at some crack initiation sites for both the conventional fatigue and dwell fatigue tests. The paper also indicates that the dwell period of the peak stress reduces the fatigue life and the dwell fatigue life seems to be longer for the specimen with circular cross section than that of the specimen with square cross section.

In a joint project of a German working group supported by the ECSC and the Studiengesellschaft fu¨r Stahlanwendung e.V., the fatigue behavior of large-scale hybrid tubular joints with inserts manufactured from the high-strength cast steel GS-12 MnMo 7 4 welded into tubular members formed from the fine-grained steel StE 500 were compared to the behavior of large-scale welded tubular joints. The latter were made from medium-strength fine-grained steel StE 355 and high-strength StE 690. In addition, data from hybrid joints with cast steel inserts of medium-strength GS-8 Mn 7 welded into StE 355 tubulars is available for comparison. The tests were carried out under variable amplitude loading in artificial seawater. The results were evaluated for the failure criteria fatigue life to crack initiation (a = 1 mm) and through crack. With medium-strength (Rp0.2 > 355 N/mm2) hybrid tubulars, where by the use of cast steel inserts the welds were removed into areas of lower stress concentration, fatigue lives higher than a factor of 100 were achieved compared to the welded nodes, even those made from StE 690. However, by the use of high-strength (Rp0.2 > 500 N/mm2) cast steel inserts and tubular members of corresponding strength, the fatigue life to crack initiation was improved by a factor of two despite a thickness reduction compared to the medium-strength design. Post-weld treatments of the welded tubulars without cast steel inserts like shot-peening, TIG-dressing, or their combination resulted only in a slight increase of fatigue life. The results of this investigation do not only show how to improve the fatigue life by a new design using cast steel inserts, but indicate also how to revise design codes from the point of damage calculation (damage sum of 0.50 for welded nodes and 0.25 for cast steel inserts instead of the conventional value of 1.00), as well as consideration of fatigue life to initiation of a technically detectable crack with a defined depth e.g., a = 1 mm.

The very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) property of TC21 titanium alloy blunt-notched specimens were investigated by using an ultrasonic fatigue test machine with a frequency of 20 kHz. S–N of blunt-notched specimens illustrated a continuous decrease characteristic with a horizontal line over the 105–109 cycle regimes. However, the fatigue life showed a large scatter for blunt-notched specimens. Blunt-notch significantly reduced the fatigue property in the high cycle and very high cycle regimes compared with that of smooth specimens. The crack initiation modes for blunt-notched specimens in the very high cycle regime can be divided into three types: (i) surface initiation, (ii) subsurface with flat facet, and (iii) subsurface with “facet + fine granular area”. The crack initiation mechanism of blunt-notched specimens is discussed in view of the interaction of notch stress gradient distribution and heterogeneous microstructure. Furthermore, the fatigue limit model based on the theory of critical distance (TCD) was modified for the very high cycle regime, and the scatter of the fatigue property of the blunt-notched specimens were well predicted by using this model.

Dwell sensitivity of titanium alloys at ambient temperature (~250 C) is a well-known phenomenon, although the question about the exact micromechanical reasons responsible for this still remains open. In this work, the normal and dwell fatigue response of a near-alpha titanium alloy, IMI 834, is studied. Samples with three different microstructures, namely, fully lamellar, fully equiaxed and bimodal, are evaluated for their dwell fatigue behaviors. A reduction in fatigue life by at least an order of magnitude is seen in all the three microstructures. Large plastic strain accumulation (almost equal to the monotonic ductility) was observed during the dwell fatigue loading condition and this is held responsible for this large debit in fatigue life. The normal fatigue lives decreased in the order, bimodal > fully equiaxed > fully lamellar, while the dwell fatigue lives decreased in the order, fully equiaxed > fully lamellar > bimodal. Bimodal microstructure showed a dwell fatigue debit of 17, while fully lamellar and fully equiaxed showed a debit of 9 and 10, respectively.

Titanium alloy Ti1023 is a typical difficult-to-cut material. Tool wear is easy to occur in machining Ti1023, which has a significant negative effect on surface integrity. Turning is one of the common methods to machine Ti1023 parts and machined surface integrity has a direct influence on the fatigue life of parts. To control surface integrity and improve anti-fatigue behavior of Ti1023 parts, it has an important significance to study the influence of tool wear on the surface integrity and fatigue life of Ti1023 in turning. Therefore, the effect of tool wear on the surface roughness, microhardness, residual stress, and plastic deformation layer of Ti1023 workpieces by turning and low-cycle fatigue tests were studied. Meanwhile, the influence mechanism of surface integrity on anti-fatigue behavior also was analyzed. The experimental results show that the change of surface roughness caused by worn tools has the most influence on anti-fatigue behavior when the tool wear VB is from 0.05 to 0.25 mm. On the other hand, the plastic deformation layer on the machined surface could properly improve the anti-fatigue behavior of specimens that were proved in the experiments. However, the higher surface roughness and significant surface defects on surface machined utilizing the worn tool with VB = 0.30 mm, which leads the anti-fatigue behavior of specimens to decrease sharply. Therefore, to ensure the anti-fatigue behavior of parts, the value of turning tool wear VB must be rigorously controlled under 0.30 mm during finishing machining of titanium alloy Ti1023.

Bonded patches are widely used in several industry sectors for repairing damaged plates, cracks in metallic structures, and reinforcement of damaged structures. Composite patches have optimal properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio, easiness in being applied, and high flexibility. Due to recent rapid growth in the aerospace industry, analyses of adhesively bonded patches applicable to repairing cracked structures have become of great significance. In the present study, the fatigue behavior of the aluminum alloy, repaired by a double-sided glass/epoxy composite patch, is studied numerically. More specifically, the effect of applying a double-sided composite patch on the fatigue life improvement of a damaged aluminum 6061-T6 is analyzed. 3D finite element numerical modeling is performed to analyze the fatigue performance of both repaired and unrepaired aluminum plates using the Abaqus package. To determine the fatigue life of the aluminum 6061-T6 plate, first, the hysteresis loop is determined, and afterward, the plastic strain amplitude is calculated. Finally, by using the Coffin-Manson equation, fatigue life is predicted and validated against the available experimental data from the literature. Results reveal that composite patches increase the fatigue life of cracked structures significantly, ranging from 55% to 100% for different applied stresses.

The fatigue properties of a low strength weld metal in a dissimilar welding joint in high cycle and very high cycle regimes were investigated by fully reversed axial tests in air at room temperature and 370°C. A clear duplex S-N curve existed as a result of the transition of fatigue failure mode from surface-induced failure to internal-induced failure at 370°C, while the S-N curve was continuously decreased at room temperature. A new model was successfully proposed to predict fatigue life, and interpret the crack initiation modes transition from surface inclusion to interior inclusion. It was concluded that cracks were initiated by competition among non-metallic inclusions, welding pores and discontinuous microstructures in high cycle regime. While in the very high cycle regime, non-metallic inclusions were the dominant crack initiation mechanism which depended on stress level, inclusion size as well as inclusion depth.

In this work 300M steel samples is used. This high-strength steel is used in aeronautic and aerospace industry and other structural applications. Initially the 300 M steel sample was submitted to a heat treatment to obtain a bainític structure. It was heated at 850 °C for 30 minutes and after that, cooled at 300 °C for 60 minutes. Afterwards two types of surface treatments have been employed: (a) using low-power laser CO2 (125 W) for introducing carbon into the surface and (b) plasma nitriding at a temperature of 500° C for 3 hours. After surface treatment, the metallographic preparation was carried out and the observations with optical and electronic microscopy have been made. The analysis of the coating showed an increase in the hardness of layer formed on the surface, mainly, among the nitriding layers. The mechanical properties were analyzed using tensile and fatigue tests. The results showed that the mechanical properties in tensile tests were strongly affected by the bainitic microstructure. The steel that received the nitriding surface by plasma treatment showed better fatigue behavior. The results are very promising because the layer formed on steel surface, in addition to improving the fatigue life, still improves protection against corrosion and wear.

Fatigue tests of smooth and notched round bars of austenitic stainless steels SUS316NG and SUS316L were conducted under cyclic tension and cyclic torsion with and without static tension. Fatigue strength under fully reversed (R=−1) cyclic tension once increased with increasing stress concentration factor up to Kt=1.5, but it decreased from Kt=1.5 to 2.5. Fatigue life increased with increasing stress concentration under pure cyclic torsion, while it decreased with increasing stress concentration under cyclic torsion with static tension. From the measurement of fatigue crack initiation and propagation lives using electric potential drop method, it was found that the crack initiation life decreased with increasing stress concentration and the crack propagation life increased with increasing stress concentration under pure cyclic torsion. Under cyclic torsion with static tension, the crack initiation life also decreased with increasing stress concentration but the crack propagation life decreased or not changed with increasing stress concentration then the total fatigue life of sharper notched specimen decreased. It was also found that the fatigue life of smooth specimen under cyclic torsion with static tension was longer than that under pure cyclic torsion. This behavior could be explained based on the cyclic strain hardening under non-proportional loading and the difference in crack path with and without static tension.

The effects of Y addition to the Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloy on the change of the microstructure and the mechanical properties (with the Y content range of 1 to 3 wt%) have been investigated. It shows that when Zn content is constant (5.65wt%), the alloys with Y content between 1.17 and 1.72wt% nearly reach its highest strength. With the composition near the optimums, the extruded Mg-6%Zn-1%Y-Zr alloy shows high strength and excellent ductility. The deformation behavior of this new alloy at high temperature has also been studied. Moreover, the super-long fatigue behavior of the Mg-6%Zn-1%Y-Zr alloy has also been tested, the results show the alloy with a high fatigue strength of about 85-90MPa in the super-long fatigue life regime of 1×109 cycles.
