<p>In this study, we have investigated the effect of various mechanical activation (MA) modes on phase and structure formation in powder mixtures made up to produce Ti<sub>3</sub>AlC<sub>2</sub> MAX phase. The optimal MA duration has been established which results in the maximum heat release under SHS due to accumulation of structural defects leading to the growth of internal energy. The effect of MA on the character and kinetics of combustion front propagation has been investigated. It was shown that following pretreatment of a powder mixture in a planetary ball mill, the combustion mode changes from stationary to a pulsating combustion and, consequently, the combustion rate decreases. The burning-out of the sample is partial and with interruptions (depressions). Force SHS-pressing technology was used for obtaining of compacted samples with homogeneous structure based on Ti<sub>3</sub>AlC<sub>2</sub>.</p>

Shake flask bioleaching of a low-grade nickel-cobalt-copper sulfide ore from Lao was investigated to test the technical feasibility to recovery metals from this ore. The mineralogical results indicated that the valuable minerals were disseminated finely and the ore had a low content of sulfur and high content of iron and magnesium, which was very harmful for bioleaching. The effects of different parameters such as the amount of acid addition, inoculation volume, initial pH, temperature and leaching time on the bioleaching performance of the ore were evaluated after pre-leaching with dilute acid. The results showed that nickel, cobalt, copper leaching rates reached 81.61%, 80.75%, 70.97% at 33 °C and 83.40%, 82.13%, 70.34% at 45 °C. The mineralogical analysis of the leaching residues revealed that the leaching rate of nickel sulfide was more than 92% and the unleached nickel was mainly present as nickel silicate.

Copper ore is classified into three groups; primary copper sulfide, copper oxide and secondary copper sulfide. Leaching copper from primary copper sulfide, such as chalcopyrite, with sulfuric acid takes longer time than from copper oxide and secondary copper sulfide. As such, an oxidant is required to extract copper from chalcopyrite. In this study, column leaching tests were carried out using primary copper sulfide ores produced in an iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposit and rich in iron in coparison to porphyry copper ores. The columns of 10 cm diameter and 100 cm long had a double tube structure so that the column temperature can be kept at desired temperature by circulating warm water in the outer tube. The oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of the leaching solutions were adjustedto 400, 450 and 500 mV vs Ag/AgCl. The column leaching test using just pH 2.0 sulfuric acid without adjustment of ORP at 45 °C got a copper recovery rate of 37 % in 400 days. On the other hand, with ORP adjusted leaching solutions of pH 2.0 sulfuric acid containing 500 mg/L Fe, the copper recovery rate reached up to 87 % in 400 days.In addition, it was necessary to keep the temperature above 45 oC to enhance copper leaching by ORP adjusted leaching solution. The result of the column leaching test at room temperature (around 30 °C) using ORP adjusted leaching solution shows that the recovery rate of copper is lower than the result at 45 °C. The ORP adjustment of leaching solution is effective for leaching copper from primary copper sulfide ore, however, the leaching temperature needs to be kept above 45 °C. As a result, it makes clear that copper leaching is enhanced by utilization of ORP adjusted leaching solutions and suggests that the solution ORP control is important to the application of bioleaching.

The influence of mechanical activation on the formation, sintering kinetics and morphology was investigated in sintered barium strontium titanate (BST) ceramics with different Ba-to-Sr ratios. Initial powders were mechanically activated for 20 and 120 min, leading to mechano-chemical reaction and formation of BaxSr1-xTiO3 phases. Agglomeration was found to represent an important factor in the process of formation of BaxSr1-xTiO3 phases around 800?C and during sintering. It reduces the effectiveness of mechanical activation on formation of BaxSr1-xTiO3 phases beyond the short period (20 min), while in the process of sintering, prolonged mechanical activation (120 min) leads to a significant reduction in sintering temperature and the corresponding value of activation energy. In addition, all three systems show a phase transformation around 1100?C, attributed to the hexagonal-to-cubic phase transition. Morphology of the final sintered ceramics can be correlated primarily with the state of the pre-sintered powder, where mechanically activated powders with smaller particle size produced more compact and less porous final product.

Cordierite is known as a leading candidate material for many applications. In this study, mechanical activation assisted synthesis of cordierite using andalusite as a starting material was attempted and phase formation of powder obtained from the heat treatment of talc-andalusite-silica system was investigated. The stoichiometric composition of cordierite (2MgO·2Al2O3·5SiO2) was prepared and ground in planetary ball mill at the rotational speed of 300 and 500 rpm for 0, 30, 60 and 90 min. The powder mixtures were heat treated in air at the temperature ranging from 1150 to 1350°C for 2 hours. Thermal reaction, phase present and microstructure of the starting materials and synthesized products were analyzed by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. It was found that cordierite phase increased with the grinding time and speed and synthesis temperature. The kinetics of phase formation in this system were also discussed.
