Aluminium 6061 has proven to be a suitable alloy as a basis for producing metal matrix composites (MMC). These MMCs have a low specific weight combined with a relatively good specific stiffness and high specific strength. The hardness and compressive strength of Al composites can be increased by reinforcing bulk material with nano particles. However the ductility of such alloys is relatively low, therefore one of the applications for such light alloys could be wear applications. In many wear conditions such as erosive or abrasive wear at normal impact angles the surface wear resistance plays a significant role. The surface fatigue properties have not been widely studied for such nanoparticle reinforced aluminium composites. The nano-reinforced composite materials were produced by means of high-energy milling (HEM) of nano-sized reinforcement particles together with a metallic matrix powder, followed by hot pressing. By utilizing up to 6 wt% multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as reinforcement the hardness of Al6061 MMC has been increased from 45 HV10 up to 317 HV10, compressive yield strength from 58 MPa up to 660 MPa and indentation modulus from 60 GPa up to 90 GPa compared to hot pressed Al6061. Surface fatigue tests were conducted at impact (dynamic) loading conditions using a hardened steel sphere as indenter. The Wöhler-like curves are plotted to estimate the surface fatigue. The surface fatigue indents were photographed by the aid of light optical microscopy (LOM) and analysed by image analysis software and optical profilometry (OP).

Aluminum Nano Metal Matrix Composites are extensively utilized for high-performance operations such as branches of engineering and medicine due to their enhanced physical and mechanical properties compared to traditional metals and metal alloys. In this research, Al6063 alloy was reinforced with 15 nm sized Magnesium Oxide particles in different weight percentages. The development of Nano Metal Matrix Composites (NMMC) was completed through stir casting method at 750 °C temperature. The fabricated Nanocomposites were examined for the mechanical properties and impact of drilling parameters on chips and burr formation. The input parameters adopted for analysis were speed, feed, and material of the drill tool. The drill tools made of HSS & TiN coated HSS were utilized in the drilling of NMMC. The influence of process parameters on chips and burr formation were analyzed and optimized the process parameters for better output intended for this experimental environment through the Artificial Immune Algorithm technique.

‘The micro/nano reinforced particle’ aluminum metal matrix composites (Al-MMCs) are widely used in manufacturing sector due to light-weight, superior strength-to-weight ratio, better fracture toughness, improved fatigue, and tensile property, enhanced corrosion resistance to harsh environment, etc. This article provides an overview of the manufacturing processes and different reinforcing elements used during the synthesis of Al-MMCs. Generally, the reinforced particles like carbides, nitrides, and compounds of oxides are used. Different organic, inorganic, industrial and agricultural waste which can be used for reinforcement in the aluminum matrix is highlighted with their feasible applications. The common mechanical properties (i.e. hardness, tensile and compressive strength, etc.) reported by different researchers are thoroughly discussed with the aim to highlight the amount of reinforcement and improvement occurred during processing. The formation and methodology for mixing condition and sintering behaviour of Al-MMCs are discussed to impart knowledge about the processing circumstances in powder metallurgical route. The affecting conditions during operating and responsible factor for the tribological behaviour are deliberated in a precise manner to recognize the potentiality of reinforcing particles in Al-MMCs. Finally, the different shortcomings and future prospects of the Al-MMCs are given to encourage the future research directions.

Metal matrix composites (MMCs) constitute an important class of weight-efficient structural material which empowering every field of engineering applications. Aluminium based metal matrix composites contains potential for high specific strength and advanced structural applications, as well as good elevated temperature resistance along with light weight application. However, need for improved tribological performance has led to the fabrication of newer variants of the composite. In the present work, aluminium based metal matrix composite (MMCs) developed through stir casting route by reinforcing different weight percentage of SiC micro (5% and 10%) and nano (1% and 2%) particles. In this research, 5083 aluminium alloy is used as matrix phase due its broad range of industrial applications. Wear behaviour of the developed aluminium matrix composite (AMC) was investigated under different conditions of applied load, operation time and speed. The analysis carried out at room temperature for three different loads (10N, 20N, and 30N) with varying four different operation times (30 mins, 60 mins, 90 mins, and 120 mins). The speed was kept constant at 1450 rpm during all experiments. The results of all considered composites are investigated and the composite with 2% SiC nano reinforcement is identified as a superior among all other composition for tribological applications point of view. Also the developed aluminium matrix composites have potential applications in many industries such as pressure vessels, pipe fittings, boat hulls, gears and pistons.

As part of a broad program on composite materials, the role of the interface on the micromechanics of deformation of metal-matrix composites is being studied. The approach is to correlate elastic behavior, micro and macroyielding, flow, and fracture behavior with associated structural detail (dislocation substructure, fracture characteristics) and stress-state. This provides an understanding of the mode of deformation from an atomistic viewpoint; a critical evaluation can then be made of existing models of composite behavior based on continuum mechanics. This paper covers the electron microscopy (transmission, fractography, scanning microscopy) of two distinct forms of composite material: conventional fiber-reinforced (aluminum-stainless steel) and directionally solidified eutectic alloys (aluminum-copper). In the former, the interface is in the form of a compound and/or solid solution whereas in directionally solidified alloys, the interface consists of a precise crystallographic boundary between the two constituents of the eutectic.
