One possibility to improve the fatigue life and strength of metallic materials is shot peening. However, at elevated temperatures, the induced residual stresses may relax. To investigate the influence of shot peening on high-temperature fatigue behavior, isothermal fatigue tests were conducted on shot-peened and untreated samples of gamma TiAl 48-2-2 at 750 °C in air. The shot-peened material was characterized using EBSD, microhardness, and residual stress analyses. Shot peening leads to a significant increase in surface hardness and high compressive residual stresses near the surface. Both effects may have a positive influence on lifetime. However, it also leads to surface notches and tensile residual stresses in the bulk material with a negative impact on cyclic lifetime. During fully reversed uniaxial tension-compression fatigue tests (R = −1) at a stress amplitude of 260 MPa, the positive effects dominate, and the fatigue lifetime increases. At a lower stress amplitude of 230 MPa, the negative effect of internal tensile residual stresses dominates, and the lifetime decreases. Shot peening leads to a transition from surface to volume crack initiation if the surface is not damaged by the shots.

An experimental investigation was conducted on Haynes Alloy 556 to study the fatigue behavior of the material at elevated temperatures. Fatigue tests were run at constant temperatures ranging from room temperature to 871°C with strain ranges from 0.265 to 1.5 percent resulting in lives between 102 and 106 cycles. Cyclic deformation properties were evaluated based on the fatigue data. Three fatigue life models were evaluated for their ability to predict the isothermal fatigue lives of the material. These included the Ostergren, Frequency Separation and Stress-Strain-Time models. Strengths and weaknesses of each model are discussed based on the experimental results.

Laser shock peening has established itself as an effective surface treatment to enhance the fatigue properties of metallic materials. Although a number of works have dealt with the formation of residual stresses, and their consequent effects on the fatigue behavior, the influence of material geometry on the peening process has not been widely addressed. In this paper, Laser Peening without Coating (LPwC) is applied at the surface of a notch in specimens made of a 6082-T6 aluminum alloy. The treated specimens are tested by three-point bending fatigue tests, and their fatigue life is compared to that of untreated samples with an identical geometry. The fatigue life of the treated specimens is found to be 1.7 to 3.3 times longer. Brinell hardness measurements evidence an increase in the surface hardness of about 50%, following the treatment. The material response to peening is modelled by a finite element model, and the compressive residual stresses are computed accordingly. Stresses as high as −210 MPa are present at the notch. The ratio between the notch curvature and the laser spot radius is proposed as a parameter to evaluate the influence of the notch.

AbstractThe stability of compressive residual stresses generated by deep rolling plays a decisive role on the fatigue behavior of specimens and components, respectively. In this regard, deep rolling at elevated temperature has proven to be very effective in stabilizing residual stresses when fatigue analysis is conducted at ambient temperature. However, since residual stresses can be affected not only by plastic deformation but also when thermal energy is provided, it is necessary to analyze the influence of temperature and time on the relaxation behavior of residual stresses at elevated temperature. To evaluate the effect of deep rolling at elevated temperatures on stability limits under thermal as well as combined thermo-mechanical loads, the present work introduces and discusses the results of investigations on the thermal stability of residual stresses in differently deep rolled material conditions of the steel SAE 1045.

Due to their high strength-to-weight-ratio, magnesium alloys are very attractive for use in automotive engineering. For application at elevated temperatures, the alloys must be creep-resistant. Therefore, the influence of the operating temperature on the material properties under quasistatic and cyclic load has to be understood. A previous study investigated tensile-tensile fatigue behavior of the magnesium alloys DieMag422 and AE42 at room temperature (RT). The aim of this study was the comparison of both alloys regarding compression, tensile, and compression-compression fatigue behavior. The quasistatic behavior was determined by means of tensile and compression tests, and the tensile-compression asymmetry was analyzed. In temperature increase fatigue tests (TIFT) and constant amplitude tests (CAT), the temperature influence on the cyclic creeping (ratcheting) behavior was investigated, and mechanisms-relevant test temperatures were determined. Furthermore, characteristic fracture mechanisms were evaluated with investigations of the microstructure and the fracture surfaces. The initial material was analyzed in computed tomographic scans and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses.

It is well known that the field of residual stresses in the surface layer of a component greatly influences its fatigue behavior. The distribution of stresses is created by processes like welding, machining, thermal treatments. The object of the present study was to correlate the effect of operations like turning, broaching and shot peening with the residual stresses of a highly–stressed flight safety component like a turbine disc made in Inconel 718 superalloy. The residual stress distributions were measured with newly installed x–ray diffraction equipment, in which real engine components can be tested. Different machining parameters and tools were used, and other factors like deformations during processing and thermal conditions of the disc in service were taken into account. The final aim of the activity was to perform a manufacturing cycle which can minimize production costs and, at the same time, guarantee the highest possible quality level required in such a critical component.

AbstractMechanical properties inherently possess uncertainties. Among these properties, fatigue behavior data generally shows significant scatter which introduces a challenge in the safe design of dynamically loaded components. These uncertainties in fatigue behavior are mainly results of factors related to surface state including: Roughness, tensile residual stresses, scratches and notches at surface. Therefore, controlling these parameters allows one to increase fatigue strength and reduce scatter and uncertainties in fatigue behavior. Mechanical surface treatments are applied on parts to increase fatigue strength via introducing compressive residual stresses and work-hardening at surface. Two of the most common among these treatments are shot peening and deep rolling. Shot peening has found many applications in industry because of its flexibility. However, it introduces irregularities at the surface and may increase roughness which causes uncertainties in the fatigue behavior data; especially for low-medium strength materials. Unlike shot peening, deep rolling reduces surface roughness. Therefore, it has the capability to reduce uncertainty in the fatigue behavior. To this date, rolling direction of deep rolling was selected as tangential direction to turning direction for axisymmetric parts. Nonetheless, the authors believe that the rolling direction has an apparent effect on the fatigue behavior. In this study, longitudinal direction was also applied for deep rolling operation and the results of these two direction applications on the EN-AW-6082 aluminum alloy were investigated. It was shown that, longitudinal rolling had yielded less scatter and uncertainty in the fatigue behavior than the tangential rolling together with the higher fatigue strength.

Modified 9Cr-1Mo steel is one of the heat-resistant steels developed for steam generator in a FBR (Fast Breeder Reactor). When it is used in a FBR, the lifetime of the steel under HCF (High Cycle Fatigue) and V-HCF (Very-High Cycle Fatigue) caused by flow-induced vibration has to be considered for assuring its long-term reliability up to 1011 cycles. Since previous studies showed that the fatigue limit did not appear up to 108 cycles, it is necessary to investigate the fatigue strength of this alloy in cycles higher than 108 cycles. In this study, in order to clarify high cycle fatigue strength and fracture mechanism of the modified 9Cr-1Mo steel, the change of the lath martensitic strengthening structure was observed in detail on the surface of specimens fractured by rotary bending fatigue tests by using EBSD (Electron Back-Scatter Diffraction) method. The Kernel Average Misorientation (KAM) value obtained from the EBSD analysis was used for the quantitative evaluation of the change of the lath martensitic texture. It was found that the average KAM values clearly decreased on the surface areas of the fractured specimens after the application of 107-108 cycles of fatigue loading at temperatures higher than 550°C. This result indicates that degradation of the lath martensitic texture occurred around the surface of specimens tested at the temperature higher than 550°C. In order to quantitatively evaluate the decrease of its strength, a hardness test was performed at room temperature by using a nanoindentation method. It was confirmed that the surface hardness of specimens decreased drastically in the specimens fractured at temperatures higher than 550°C. From these results, it was concluded that the effective 0.2%-proof stress decreased during the fatigue tests by the degradation of the lath martensitic texture caused by the fatigue loading at elevated temperatures. Further analyses are indispensable for explicating the damage mechanism more in detail.

The effects of variable amplitude loading on fretting fatigue behavior of titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V were examined. Fretting fatigue tests were carried out under constant stress amplitude and three different two-level block loading conditions: high-low (Hi-Lo), low-high (Lo-Hi), and repeated block of high and low stress amplitudes. The damage fractions and fretting fatigue lives were estimated by linear and non-linear cumulative damage rules. Damage curve analysis (DCA) and double linear damage rule (DLDR) were capable to account for the loading order effects in Hi-Lo and Lo-Hi loadings. In addition, the predictions by DCA and DLDR were better than that by linear damage rule (LDR). Besides its simplicity of implementation, LDR was also capable of estimating failure lives reasonably well. Repeated two-level block loading resulted in shorter lives and lower fretting fatigue limit compared to those under constant amplitude loading. The degree of reduction in fretting fatigue lives and fatigue strength depended on the ratio of cycles at lower stress amplitude to that at higher stress amplitude. Fracture surface of specimens subjected to Hi-Lo and repeated block loading showed the clear evidence of change in stress amplitude of applied load. Especially, the repeated two-level block loading resulted in characteristic markers which reflected change in crack growth rates corresponding to different stress amplitudes.

Shot peening is a mechanical treatment that induces several changes in the material: surface roughness, increased hardness close to the surface, and, the most important, compressive residual stresses. This paper analyzes the effect of this treatment on alloy Al 7075-T651 in the case of fretting fatigue with cylindrical contact through the results of 114 fretting fatigue tests. There are three independent loads applied in this type of test: a constant normal load N, pressing the contact pad against the specimen; a cyclic bulk stress σ in the specimen; and a cyclic tangential load Q through the contact. Four specimens at each of 23 different combinations of these three parameters were tested—two specimens without any treatment and two treated with shot peening. The fatigue lives, contact surface, fracture surface, and residual stresses and hardness were studied. Improvement in fatigue life ranged from 3 to 22, depending on fatigue life. The relaxation of residual-stress distribution related to the number of applied cycles was also measured. Finally, another group of specimens treated with shot peening was polished and tested, obtaining similar lives as in the tests with specimens that were shot-peened but not polished.

To evaluate the effect of coatings on the fatigue behaviors of turbine rotor steel, TiN and TiAlN films were deposited on the 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels by arc-ion plating (AIP) method with and wihtout screen ion filter. The coating thickness were varied with 2.5 μm, 3.5 μm, and 5.0 μm. A Cu-K α beam source was used as a characteristic X-ray and the crystal plane of (422) was selected to evaluate the residual stresses. In order to clear the relationship between fatigue behavior and residual stress of specimen coated with TiN and TiAlN films, the fatigue tests of specimens with and without coating were carried out at room temperatures respectively. It is shown that the fatigue life of the coated specimen was longer than that of uncoated specimen. The compressive residual stresses on the coatings were higher, and the fatigue crack initiated at an inclusion in the substrate near bond interface. It is known that compressive residual stress caused by hard coating would retard the fatigue crack initiation on the specimen surface, and then led to fatigue strength and fatigue life increasing.
