Fine-grained steels belong to the progressive materials, which are increasingly used in the production of welded structures subjected to both static and dynamic loads. These are unalloyed or microalloyed steels hardened mainly by the grain-boundary strengthening mechanism. Such steels require specific welding procedures, especially in terms of the heat input value. At present, there are studies of the welding influence on the change of thermomechanically processed steels’ mechanical properties, however mainly under static loading. The paper is therefore focused on the assessment of the welding effect under dynamic loading of welded joints. In the experimental part was determined the influence of five different heat input values on the change of weld fatigue life. As a result, there is both determination of five S-N curves for the double-sided fillet welds from the thermomechanically processed fine-grained steel S460MC and the quantification of the main influences reducing the fatigue life of the joint.

This paper presents a method for fatigue life prediction of engineering components subjected to dynamic loads. It is based on the determination of the nominal stress at the crack position using frequency response functions and this in turn enables the prediction of dynamic fatigue life under forced vibration. The main advantage of this approach lies in the fact that stresses used for fatigue life prediction are determined via a vibration analysis and hence not only elastic but also inertia and damping forces are included in the model. The implementation of the technique is discussed in the case of a bladed-disc assembly where single-blade mistuning is caused by a fatigue crack. It is believed that the proposed method has promising implications for safer designs and also for the prediction of inspection intervals, especially in rotating machinery applications where such considerations are of paramount importance.

The paper presents the results of theoretical modeling of joined movement of pump rods and plunger pump and multiphase flow in a well for determination of dynamic loads on the polished rod of pumping unit. The specificity of the proposed model is the possibility of taking into account for complications in rod pump operating, such as leakage in valve steam, presence of gas and emulsion, incorrect fitting of plunger inside the cylinder pump. The satisfactory agreement of results of the model simulation with filed measurements are obtained.

Laminated materials incorporating plastics seem to be especially well suited lor highly stressed aircraft components, by reason of their good strength properties. Paper, fabric and wood veneers treated with plastics on a phenolic basis were tested with regard to their strength, especially in bending, shear, absorbed energy in impact bending, notching strength and in their resistance against moisture. Further, the behaviour of compressed plastics was studied at different temperatures under static and dynamic loads. A part of the research was extended to pure phenol resin and to thermoplastics based on methacrylate and polyvinylchloride. The bonding properties of laminated compressed plastics were established. Concluding, some experiments relating to the practical manufacture of aeroplane components are communicated.

ABSTRACTA recent consideration in aircraft design is the use of folding wing-tips with the aim of enabling higher aspect ratio aircraft with less induced drag while also meeting airport gate limitations. This study investigates the effect of exploiting folding wing-tips in flight as a device to reduce both static and dynamic loads. A representative civil jet aircraft aeroelastic model was used to explore the effect of introducing a wing-tip device, connected to the wings with an elastic hinge, on the load behaviour. For the dynamic cases, vertical discrete gusts and continuous turbulence were considered. The effects of hinge orientation, stiffness, damping and wing-tip weight on the static and dynamic response were investigated. It was found that significant reductions in both the static and dynamic loads were possible. For the case considered, a 25% increase in span using folding wing-tips resulted in almost no increase in loads.

Non-alloyed P355NH steel according to EN 10028-3:2003 belongs to a group of fine-grained steels for pressure vessels being used in welded construction at decompression chamber for divers. Values of the chemical, structural and mechanical characteristics and steel toughness experimentally determined fit the analyzed steel in P355NH steel group according to EN 10028-3:2003. The toughness of the analyzed steel at the test temperature of -30°C is characterized by high values of fracture energy KV in longitudinal direction between 48 and 86 J and on transverse direction between 17 and 34J. Steel toughness at the test temperature of -30°C required by ABS standard (in Section 4/5.3 and Table 1) provides for breaking energy KV of min. 35J, with ductile fracture surfaces, value that is not respected at some lots of the three batches (A, B, C) of steel. Finally, based on the direct correlation established between HV10 hardness of the fine structure and the toughness it was made a selection of the lots of non-alloy steel P355NH which correspond to ABS norm for welded construction of the decompression chamber for divers

The determination of tearing energy, i.e. the energy available for crack growth, is an essential prerequisite for the estimation of the fatigue life of rubber components. Three methods of determining tearing energy are considered: from changes in total energy, from crack surface displacements, and by comparison with known values for the same crack growth rates. It is shown by applying experimental and numerical techniques to plane-stress testpieces, not necessarily of uniform stress or thickness, that the methods are satisfactory.
