The paper presents an algorithm for calculating the fatigue life of S355J0 steel specimens subjected to cyclic bending, cyclic torsion, and a combination of bending and torsion using mean stress values. The method of transforming cycle amplitudes with a non-zero mean value into fatigue equivalent cycles with increased amplitude and zero mean value was used. Commonly known and used transformation dependencies were used and a new model of the impact of the mean stress value on the fatigue life of the material was proposed. The life calculated based on the proposed algorithm was compared with the experimental life. It has been shown that the proposed model finds the widest application in the load cases studied, giving good compliance of the calculation results with the experimental results.

In this paper, based on the thought of Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM), a new general model for predicting multiaxial fatigue life with influence of mean stress is presented. Different from the MWCM, the expressions of multiaxiality effect and mean stress effect are located separately in the proposed fatigue equation, so that the new model can consider the impact of both axial and torsional mean stresses, and the equation form possesses excellent extendibility and variability. The wildly used von Mises equivalent stress is adopted as the fatigue parameter to improve computational efficiency. Finally, in conjunction with the Itoh criterion, the model can be trivially extended to perform non-proportional fatigue prediction with different mean stresses. Some representative fatigue tests published in the previous literature are used to verify this study.

Considering the effects of mean stress, the progressive accumulation inelastic strain occurs in engineering components under the direction of mean stress, it is simply known as ratcheting. Based on the ductility exhaustion theory, a new model is proposed to account for the effects of mean stress and ratcheting on the component fatigue life. The capability and accuracy of the proposed model are compared with those of Walker, Xia-Ellyin, Goswami, GDP and Peng models. A comparison between the model prediction and tested life is found to be quite satisfactory in the cases of 9 sets of experimental data available in the literature under different loading conditions.

The paper reports on the results of a comparison involving mathematical models applied for fatigue life calculations where the mean load value is taken into account. Several models based on the critical plane approach and energy density parameter were tested and analyzed. A fatigue test results for three types of materials are presented in this paper. The specimens were subjected to bending, torsion and a combination of bending with torsion with mean value of the load. Analysis of the calculation results show that the best fatigue life estimations are obtained by using models that are sensitive to the changes of material behavior under fatigue loading in relation to the specified number of cycles of the load.

The paper deals with a comparison of fatigue life calculations, obtained on the basis of classical Basquin diagrams and approximated diagrams acquired with the use of the section method, which allows us to fit the diagrams shape to real material properties. While comparing the calculation results, literature data concerning fatigue tests of welded cruciform specimens from high performance low-alloy steel HSLA-80 presented by Kihl and Sarkani as well as of smooth specimens out of the aluminum alloy 75S-T6 by Grover et al. has been used. It has been noticed that the calculations performed with the use of fatigue diagrams approximated using the section method reflect the true behavior of the material. The models by Niesłony-Böhm and Smith-Watson-Topper compensating the influence of the mean stress gave similar results.

The paper presents comparison of the mathematical models for fatigue life calculations including influence of the mean load value. Several model based on stress analysis on the critical plane and energy density parameter were investigated. In this paper three types of materials were tested and subjected to bending, torsion and combination of bending with torsion loading with the participation of mean value of the load. It was found, that the best fatigue life estimations obtained by models taking into account changes of the material behavior under fatigue loading related to the specified numbers of cycles of the load.

The literature in the area of material fatigue indicates that the fatigue properties may change with the number of cycles. Researchers recommend taking this into account in fatigue life calculation algorithms. The results of simulation research presented in this paper relate to an algorithm for estimating the fatigue life of specimens subjected to block loading with a nonzero mean value. The problem of block loads using a novel calculation model is presented in this paper. The model takes into account the change in stress–strain curve parameters caused by mean strain. Simulation tests were performed for generated triangular waveforms of strains, where load blocks with changed mean strain values were applied. During the analysis, the degree of fatigue damage was compared. The results of calculations obtained for standard values of stress–strain parameters (for symmetric loads) and those determined, taking into account changes in the curve parameters, are compared and presented in this paper. It is shown that by neglecting the effect of the mean strain value on the K′ and n′ parameters and by considering only the parameters of the cyclic deformation curve for εm = 0 (symmetric loads), the ratio of the total degree of fatigue damage varies from 10% for εa = 0.2% to 3.5% for εa = 0.6%. The largest differences in the calculation for ratios of the partial degrees of fatigue damage were observed in relation to the reference case for the sequence of block n3, where εm = 0.4%. The simulation results show that higher mean strains change the properties of the material, and in such cases, it is necessary to take into account the influence of the mean value on the material response under block loads.

In this paper, motivated by the problem of the coexistence on transmission links of telecommunications networks of elastic and unresponsive traffic, we study the impact on the busy period of an M/M/1 queue of a small perturbation in the service rate. The perturbation depends upon an independent stationary process (X(t)) and is quantified by means of a parameter ε ≪ 1. We specifically compute the two first terms of the power series expansion in ε of the mean value of the busy period duration. This allows us to study the validity of the reduced service rate approximation, which consists in comparing the perturbed M/M/1 queue with the M/M/1 queue whose service rate is constant and equal to the mean value of the perturbation. For the first term of the expansion, the two systems are equivalent. For the second term, the situation is more complex and it is shown that the correlations of the environment process (X(t)) play a key role.

This paper further investigates the Talent versus Luck (TvL) model described by [Pluchino et al. Talent versus luck: The role of randomness in success and failure, Adv. Complex Syst. 21 (2018) 1850014] which models the relationship between ‘talent’ and ‘luck’ on the impact of an individuals career. It is shown that the model is very sensitive to both random sampling and the choice of value for the input parameters. Running the model repeatedly with the same set of input parameters gives a range of output values of over 50% of the mean value. The sensitivity of the inputs of the model is analyzed using a variance-based approach based upon generating Sobol sequences of quasi-random numbers. When using the model to look at the talent associated with an individual who has the maximum capital over a model run it has been shown that the choice for the standard deviation of the talent distribution contributes to 67% of the model variability. When investigating the maximum amount of capital returned by the model the probability of a lucky event at any given epoch has the largest impact on the model, almost three times more than any other individual parameter. Consequently, during the analysis of the model results one must keep in mind the impact that only small changes in the input parameters can have on the model output.

The goal of the present paper is to discuss the reliability of a strain-based multiaxial Low-Cycle Fatigue (LCF) criterion in estimating the fatigue lifetime of metallic structural components subjected to multiaxial sinusoidal loading with zero and non-zero mean value. Since it is well-known that a tensile mean normal stress reduces the fatigue life of structural components, three different models available in the literature are implemented in the present criterion in order to take into account the above mean stress effect. In particular, such a criterion is formulated in terms of strains by employing the displacement components acting on the critical plane and, then, by defining an equivalent strain related to such a plane. The Morrow model, the Smith-Watson-Topper model and the Manson-Halford model are applied to define such an equivalent strain. The effectiveness of the new formulations is evaluated through comparison with some experimental data reported in the literature, related to biaxial fatigue tests performed on metallic specimens under in-and out-of-phase loadings characterised by non-zero mean stress values.

Background: The present investigation was envisaged to find out the impact of extreme hot environmental temperature period (ETP) on marker enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism in male and female non-descript sheep of various age groups i.e. 4 to 13 months from arid tracts of Rajasthan. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) marker enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism were considered for study. Methods: During the period October 2016-June 2017 blood samples were collected to harvest sera for spectrophotometric method from 240 healthy animals selected from private slaughter house during moderate and extreme hot environmental temperature periods (ETPs). The mean values of markers attained during moderate ETP were reckoned as the control. It was 10.00 ± 0.10 UL-1 and 42.00±1.00 respectively. Conclusion: The mean value of MDH was significantly (p≤0.05) higher while G-6-PDH significantly (p≤0.05) lowers during extreme hot temperature in comparison to moderate period. Therefore, it could be concluded that variations in enzyme markers were associated with changes in environmental temperatures. Probably ETP were able to produce a profound effect on carbohydrate metabolism in sheep. Therfore it can be suggested that during the period of extreme temperature balanced ration must be provided to the animal along with proper management to decrease the severity of temperature impact.
