Surface-mounted permanent magnet machines are widely used in low and medium speed applications. Pulsating torque components is the most crucial challenge, especially in low-speed applications. Magnet pole shape optimization can be used to mitigate these components. In this research, an analytical model is proposed to calculate the magnetic vector potential in surface-mounted permanent magnet machines. A mathematical expression is also derived for optimal the magnet shape to reduce the cogging torque and electromagnetic torque components. The presented model is based on the resolution of the Laplace’s and Poisson’s equations in polar coordinates by using the subdomain method and applying hyperbolic functions. The proposed method is applied to the performance computation of a surface-mounted permanent magnet machine, i.e., a 3-phase 12S-10P motor. The analytical results are validated through the finite element analysis (FEA) method.

This paper presents a mitigation method of slot harmonic cogging torque considering unevenly magnetized magnets in a permanent magnet synchronous motor. In previous studies, it has been confirmed that non-uniformly magnetized permanent magnets cause an unexpected increase of cogging torque because of additional slot harmonic components. However, these studies did not offer a countermeasure against it. First, in this study, the relationship between the residual magnetic flux density of the permanent magnet and the cogging torque is derived from the basic form of the Maxwell stress tensor equation. Second, the principle of the slot harmonic cogging torque generation is explained qualitatively, and the mitigation method of the slot harmonic component is proposed. Finally, the proposed method is verified with the finite element analysis and experimental results.

Therefore, several structures have been developed, and the choice of a topology designed for a specified application requires the knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of different topologies. The present work deals with the evaluation of the performances of different radial flux surface-mounted permanent magnet motors designed for an electric vehicle motor application. The objective of this survey is to show the effect of the rotor position (inner or outer) and the magnets segmentation on the machine output torque and iron losses. In this context, four machines with: (i) inner rotor, (ii) inner rotor segmented magnets, (iii) outer rotor and (iv) outer rotor segmented magnets have been designed and studied. All these machines have the same geometrical dimensions and current loading. The main idea is to develop a machine with smoothness torque, lower torque ondulation, lower iron losses, and which is mechanically robust. Firstly, the output torque of the different structure is computed. Secondly, by means of an improved analytical model coupled with 2 dimensional transient finite element analysis (FEA), the machines iron losses are predicted.</p></td></tr></tbody></table>

In this paper, a model of unit motor (16p15s) which is used for vertical elevator has been set up. And a modification of the primary geometry has been presented. In the new geometry, pole shoes are affixed to the primary poles. The finite element analysis (FEA) of various width of pole and different width of pole shoe have been carried out in this paper. The results show that the force profile of the proposed PMLSM has been improved. The minimum force ripple occurs in a suitable width of the pole shoes. And the back EMF constant is analyzed, too.

This paper proposes a linear sandwiched switched flux permanent magnet (LSSFPM) machine and two double-sided linear switched flux permanent magnet (LSFPM) machines havingtoroidal windings. Bothmachines are optimized and then compared with the conventional 6-slot/5-pole LSFPM machine. It is found that the proposed machines exhibithigher magnet usage efficiencies than the conventional LSFPM machine, and the double-sided machines show shorter end-windings, which are benefited from toroidal windings. The performance, including back-EMF, cogging force and average thrust force, are analyzedby two-dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis (FEA).

This paper presents a new scientific contribution on the two-dimensional (2-D) subdomain technique in polar coordinates taking into account the finite relative permeability of the ferromagnetic material. The constant relative permeability corresponds to linear part of the nonlinear B(H) curve. As in conventional technique, the method of separation of variables and the Fourier&rsquo;s series are used for the resolution of magnetostatic Maxwell&rsquo;s equations in each region. Although, the general solutions of magnetic field in the subdomains and boundary conditions (BCs) between regions are different in the conventional and proposed method. In this later, the magnetic field solution in each subdomain is a superposition of two magnetic quantities in the two directions (i.e., r- and Q-axis) and the BCs between two regions are also in both directions. For example, the scientific contribution has been applied to an air- or iron-cored coil supplied by a constant current. The distribution of local quantities (i.e., the magnetic vector potential and flux density) has been validated by a corresponding 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA). The obtained semi-analytical results are in very good agreement with those of numerical method.
