We study power-mixture type functional equations in terms of Laplace–Stieltjes transforms of probability distributions on the right half-line [0,∞). These equations arise when studying distributional equations of the type Z=dX+TZ, where the random variable T≥0 has known distribution, while the distribution of the random variable Z≥0 is a transformation of that of X≥0, and we want to find the distribution of X. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such functional equations to have unique solutions. The uniqueness is equivalent to a characterization property of a probability distribution. We present results that are either new or extend and improve previous results about functional equations of compound-exponential and compound-Poisson types. In particular, we give another affirmative answer to a question posed by J. Pitman and M. Yor in 2003. We provide explicit illustrative examples and deal with related topics.

Necessary and sufficient conditions on weight pairs guaranteeing the two-weight inequalities for the potential operators(Iαf)(x)=∫0∞(f(t)/|x−t|1−α)dtand(ℐα1,α2f)(x,y)=∫0∞∫0∞(f(t,τ)/|x−t|1−α1|y−τ|1−α2)dtdτon the cone of nonincreasing functions are derived. In the case ofℐα1,α2, we assume that the right-hand side weight is of product type. The same problem for other mixed-type double potential operators is also studied. Exponents of the Lebesgue spaces are assumed to be between 1 and ∞.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the quotient problem for right noetherian nonsingular rings and the quotient problem for semicritical rings. It is shown that a right noetherian nonsingular ring R has an artinian classical quotient ring iff certain semicritical factor rings R/Ki, i = 1,…,n, possess artinian classical quotient rings and regular elements in R/Ki lift to regular elements of R for all i. If R is a two sided noetherian nonsingular ring, then the existence of an artinian classical quotient ring is equivalent to each R/Ki possessing an artinian classical quotient ring and the right Krull primes of R consisting of minimal prime ideals. If R is also weakly right ideal invariant, then the former condition is redundant. Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for a nonsingular semicritical ring to have an artinian classical quotient ring.

J. Lambek and G. Michler [3] have initiated the study of a ring of quotients RP associated with a two-sided prime ideal P in a right noetherian ring R. The ring RP is the quotient ring (in the sense of [1]) associated with the hereditary torsion class τ consisting of all right R-modules M for which HomR(M, ER(R/P)) = 0, where ER(X) is the injective hull of the R-module X.In the present paper, we shall study further the properties of the ring RP. The main results are Theorems 4.3 and 4.6. Theorem 4.3 gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the torsion class associated with P to have property (T), as well as some properties of RP when these conditions are indeed satisfied, while Theorem 4.6 gives necessary and sufficient conditions for R to satisfy the right Ore condition with respect to (P).

AbstractIn this paper, a Volterra integral equation of the first kind in convolutions on the semiaxis when the integral operator kernel and the right-hand side of the equation have a bounded support is considered. An inverse problem of reconstructing the solution to the equation and the integral operator kernel from values of the right-hand side is formulated. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the inverse problem solvability are obtained. A uniqueness and stability theorem is proved. Explicit formulas for reconstruction of the solution and kernel are obtained.

In the paper, multivariate probability distributions are considered that are representable as scale mixtures of multivariate stable distributions. Multivariate analogs of the Mittag–Leffler distribution are introduced. Some properties of these distributions are discussed. The main focus is on the representations of the corresponding random vectors as products of independent random variables and vectors. In these products, relations are traced of the distributions of the involved terms with popular probability distributions. As examples of distributions of the class of scale mixtures of multivariate stable distributions, multivariate generalized Linnik distributions and multivariate generalized Mittag–Leffler distributions are considered in detail. Their relations with multivariate ‘ordinary’ Linnik distributions, multivariate normal, stable and Laplace laws as well as with univariate Mittag–Leffler and generalized Mittag–Leffler distributions are discussed. Limit theorems are proved presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of the distributions of random sequences with independent random indices (including sums of a random number of random vectors and multivariate statistics constructed from samples with random sizes) to scale mixtures of multivariate elliptically contoured stable distributions. The property of scale-mixed multivariate elliptically contoured stable distributions to be both scale mixtures of a non-trivial multivariate stable distribution and a normal scale mixture is used to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of the distributions of random sums of random vectors with covariance matrices to the multivariate generalized Linnik distribution.

SynopsisThis paper studies the equationwhere the differential operator Ln is defined byand a necessary and sufficient condition that all oscillatory solutions of the above equation converge to zero asymptotically is presented. The results obtained extend and improve previous ones of Kusano and Onose, and Singh, even in the usual case wherewhere N is an integer with l≦N≦n–1.

AbstractWe answer the natural question: when is a transversely holomorphic symplectic foliation induced by a generalized complex structure? The leafwise symplectic form and transverse complex structure determine an obstruction class in a certain cohomology, which vanishes if and only if our question has an affirmative answer. We first study a component of this obstruction, which gives the condition that the leafwise cohomology class of the symplectic form must be transversely pluriharmonic. As a consequence, under certain topological hypotheses, we infer that we actually have a symplectic fibre bundle over a complex base. We then show how to compute the full obstruction via a spectral sequence. We give various concrete necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the obstruction. Throughout, we give examples to test the sharpness of these conditions, including a symplectic fibre bundle over a complex base that does not come from a generalized complex structure, and a regular generalized complex structure that is very unlike a symplectic fibre bundle, i.e., for which nearby leaves are not symplectomorphic.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to extend a result presented by Roman Ger during the 15th International Conference on Functional Equations and Inequalities. First, we present some necessary and sufficient conditions for a continuous function to be convex. We will use these to extend Ger’s result. Finally, we make some connections with other mathematical notions, as g-convex dominated function or Bregman distance.
