Although the numbers are relatively small with respect to non-organic livestock, the importance of organic livestock farms lies in their sustainable coexistence with the natural environment and in the high-quality food products obtained. In this type of production, no artificial chemicals or genetically modified organisms are used, therefore there will be less impact on the environment and, in most cases, native breeds are employed. This paper describes a geostatistical study of organic livestock farms in Andalusia (southern Spain), conducted using information from the 2009 Agricultural Census, by classes of livestock. This region currently records the highest output in Spain for organic livestock farming. The number of farms was fitted according to the univariate generalized Waring distribution, which is presented as a means of analyzing this type of discrete measurement, using agricultural or livestock data. The Waring distribution is used when the frequency of occurrence of a phenomenon is very low and allows one to divide the variance. The most important outcome of this study is the finding that livestock data variability is mainly due to external factors such as the proneness component of the variance.

Issues related to the reproduction of animals have been and remain one of the most complex and relevant problems of biology and are constantly finding a direct and effective way out into livestock farming practice. The rational use of breeding sheep as producers is limited by the lack of standard, objective methods and methods for the timely assessment of their reproductive ability. The article presents the results of evaluating the sperm production of rams-producers. For the first time, the freshly obtained sperm of rams of Moldavian type producers of the Karakul breed was evaluated using the macroscopic method - ejaculate volume, color and smell, as well as the microscopic method - motility, sperm concentration in the ejaculate, total sperm count in the ejaculate sperm movements (VAP; VSL and VCL) as well as the percentage of abnormal forms of sperm. The experiments were carried out on sheep producers grown on a pedigree farm of the experimental farm of the Moldavian Scientific and Practical Institute of Biotechnology in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. As a result of the studies, it was found that the ejaculate volume on average was 0.99 ± 0.04 ml, motility was 0.95 ± 0.02 and sperm concentration 1.51 ± 0.14 billion/ml. The percentage of pathological forms in sperm averaged 13.72 ± 0.61, an indicator that characterizes the high quality of sperm. The average quality indicator of ejaculates obtained from ram-producers of the Moldavian type of the Karakul breed corresponds to physiological standards for the Karakul breed. The average percentage of pathological forms of sperm found in ejaculates indicates that the rams were in good conditions of feeding and keeping. According to research, we can say that the Moldovan type of Karakul rams can be successfully used to obtain high quality ejaculates suitable for freezing sperm at 196°C.

ABSTRACT The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be the first low-frequency instrument with the capability to directly image the structures of the epoch of reionization (EoR). Indeed, deep imaging of the EoR over five targeted fields of 20 sq deg each has been selected as the highest priority science objective for SKA1. Aiming at preparing for this highly challenging observation, we perform an extensive pre-selection of the ‘quietest’ and ‘cleanest’ candidate fields in the southern sky to be suited for deep imaging of the EoR using existing catalogues and observations over a broad frequency range. The candidate fields should meet a number of strict criteria to avoid contaminations from foreground structures and sources. The candidate fields should also exhibit both the lowest average surface brightness and smallest variance to ensure uniformity and high-quality deep imaging over the fields. Our selection eventually yields a sample of 7 ‘ideal’ fields of 20 sq deg in the southern sky that could be targeted for deep imaging of the EoR. Finally, these selected fields are convolved with the synthesized beam of SKA1-low stations to ensure that the effect of sidelobes from the far-field bright sources is also weak.

The aim of the research is the scientific justification, development and implementation of physical methods for the protection of culinary products from microbiological damage. The effect of the electromagnetic field of extremely low frequency (EMF ELF) on the expiration date of vegetable salads was studied. The effective processing parameters of the EMF ELF treatment of vegetable vinaigrette postponed its expiration date, providing high quality and safety of dishes throughout the storage period.

Several studies have investigated the effect of livestock farm emissions on the respiratory health of local residents, but results are inconsistent. This study aims to explore associations between the presence of livestock farms and respiratory health in an area of high-density livestock farming in the Netherlands. We focused especially on associations between farm exposures and respiratory symptoms within subgroups of potentially susceptible patients with a pre-existing lung disease. In total, 14 875 adults (response rate 53.4%) completed a questionnaire concerning respiratory health, smoking habits and personal characteristics. Different indicators of livestock farm exposures relative to the home address were computed using a geographic information system.Prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma was lower among residents living within 100 m of a farm (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.24–0.91 and OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.45–0.93, respectively). However, >11 farms in 1000 m compared to fewer than four farms in 1000 m (fourth quartileversusfirst quartile) was associated with wheezing among COPD patients (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.01–2.89). Using general practitioners' electronic medical records, we demonstrated that selection bias did not affect the observed associations. Our data suggest a protective effect of livestock farm emissions on the respiratory health of residents. Nonetheless, COPD patients living near livestock farms reported more respiratory symptoms, suggesting an increased risk of exacerbations.

AbstractRecent advances in the processing of complex-oxide materials has allowed us to monolithically grow ferroelectrics of lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) and barium strontium titanate (BST) systems on a GaN/sapphire structure. High quality films of PLZT and BST were grown on GaN/c-Al2O3 in a thickness range of 0.3-5 [.proportional]m by a solgel technique. Field-induced birefringence, as large as 0.02, was measured from a PLZT layer grown on a buffered GaN/sapphire structure. UV illumination was found to result in more symmetrical electrooptic hysteresis loop. BST films on GaN demonstrated a low frequency dielectric constant of up to 800 with leakage current density as low as 5.5.10−8 A/cm2.

A novel way producing magnesium billets, LFEC (low frequency electromagnetic casting processing), was developed in Northeastern University in China. The high-quality magnesium billets with less macrosegregation, refined microstructure, and better surface quality were achieved because the temperature field and the flow pattern of magnesium DC casting were improved significantly after applying low frequency electromagnetic field. Extrusion is an important plastic deformation process for magnesium alloys. In this research, the magnesium billets from LFEC were extruded through a special designed die into sheets. The results of investigation on AZ31B indicated that the extrusion velocity has obvious effects on their microstructures and mechanical properties and the sheets from LFEC had finer microstructure and higher mechanical properties than that from conventional DC casting.
