A bat algorithm (BA) is a heuristic algorithm that operates by imitating the echolocation behavior of bats to perform global optimization. The BA is widely used in various optimization problems because of its excellent performance. In the bat algorithm, the global search capability is determined by the parameter loudness and frequency. However, experiments show that each operator in the algorithm can only improve the performance of the algorithm at a certain time. In this paper, a novel bat algorithm with multiple strategies coupling (mixBA) is proposed to solve this problem. To prove the effectiveness of the algorithm, we compared it with CEC2013 benchmarks test suits. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon and Friedman tests were conducted to distinguish the differences between it and other algorithms. The results prove that the proposed algorithm is significantly superior to others on the majority of benchmark functions.

The imperialist competitive algorithm combined with chaos theory (CICA) demonstrates excellent performance in global optimization problems. However, its computational complexity increases with the introduction of chaotic maps. To address this, we integrate CICA with a dropout strategy that randomly samples the dimensions of each solution at each iteration of the computation. We investigate the potential of the proposed algorithm with different chaotic maps through six symmetric and six asymmetric benchmark functions. We also apply the proposed algorithm to AUVs’ path planning application showing its performance and effectiveness in solving real problems. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm not only has low computational complexity but also enhances local search capability near the globally optimal solution with an insignificant loss in the success rate.

Bat Algorithm (BA) and Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm (ABC) are frequently used in solving global optimization problems. Many new algorithms in the literature are obtained by modifying these algorithms for both constrained and unconstrained optimization problems or using them in a hybrid manner with different algorithms. Although successful algorithms have been proposed, BA’s performance declines in complex and large-scale problems are still an ongoing problem. The inadequate global search capability of the BA resulting from its algorithm structure is the major cause of this problem. In this study, firstly, inertia weight was added to the speed formula to improve the search capability of the BA. Then, a new algorithm that operates in a hybrid manner with the ABC algorithm, whose diversity and global search capability is stronger than the BA, was proposed. The performance of the proposed algorithm (BA_ABC) was examined in four different test groups, including classic benchmark functions, CEC2005 small-scale test functions, CEC2010 large-scale test functions, and classical engineering design problems. The BA_ABC results were compared with different algorithms in the literature and current versions of the BA for each test group. The results were interpreted with the help of statistical tests. Furthermore, the contribution of BA and ABC algorithms, which constitute the hybrid algorithm, to the solutions is examined. The proposed algorithm has been found to produce successful and acceptable results.

Bat algorithm (BA) is a population-based stochastic search technique that has been widely used to solve the diverse kind of optimization problems. Population initialization is the current ongoing research problem in evolutionary computing algorithms. Appropriate population initialization assists the algorithm to investigate the swarm search space effectively. BA faces premature convergence problem to find actual global optimization value. Low discrepancy sequences are slightly lesser random number than pseudo-random; however, they are more powerful for computational approaches. In this work, new population initialization approach Halton (BA-HA), Sobol (BA-SO), and Torus (BA-TO) are proposed, which helps bats to avoid from the premature convergence. The proposed approaches are examined on standard benchmark functions, and simulation results are compared with standard BA initialized with uniform distribution. The results depict that substantial enhancement can be attained in the performance of standard BA while varying the random numbers sequences to low discrepancy sequences.

A Guiding Evolutionary Algorithm (GEA) with greedy strategy for global optimization problems is proposed. Inspired by Particle Swarm Optimization, the Genetic Algorithm, and the Bat Algorithm, the GEA was designed to retain some advantages of each method while avoiding some disadvantages. In contrast to the usual Genetic Algorithm, each individual in GEA is crossed with the current global best one instead of a randomly selected individual. The current best individual served as a guide to attract offspring to its region of genotype space. Mutation was added to offspring according to a dynamic mutation probability. To increase the capability of exploitation, a local search mechanism was applied to new individuals according to a dynamic probability of local search. Experimental results show that GEA outperformed the other three typical global optimization algorithms with which it was compared.

A novel robust hybrid metaheuristic optimization approach, which can be considered as an improvement of the recently developed bat algorithm, is proposed to solve global numerical optimization problems. The improvement includes the addition of pitch adjustment operation in HS serving as a mutation operator during the process of the bat updating with the aim of speeding up convergence, thus making the approach more feasible for a wider range of real-world applications. The detailed implementation procedure for this improved metaheuristic method is also described. Fourteen standard benchmark functions are applied to verify the effects of these improvements, and it is demonstrated that, in most situations, the performance of this hybrid metaheuristic method (HS/BA) is superior to, or at least highly competitive with, the standard BA and other population-based optimization methods, such as ACO, BA, BBO, DE, ES, GA, HS, PSO, and SGA. The effect of the HS/BA parameters is also analyzed.
