Additive manufacturing processes such as selective laser melting are rapidly gaining a foothold in safety-relevant areas of application such as powerplants or nuclear facilities. Special requirements apply to these applications. A certain material behavior must be guaranteed and the material must be approved for these applications. One of the biggest challenges here is the transfer of these already approved materials from conventional manufacturing processes to additive manufacturing. Ferritic steels that have been processed conventionally by forging, welding, casting, and bending are widely used in safety-relevant applications such as reactor pressure vessels, steam generators, valves, and piping. However, the use of ferritic steels for AM has been relatively little explored. In search of new materials for the SLM process, it is assumed that materials with good weldability are also additively processible. Therefore, the processability with SLM, the process behavior, and the achievable material properties of the weldable ferritic material 22NiMoCr3-7, which is currently used in nuclear facilities, are investigated. The material properties achieved in the SLM are compared with the conventionally forged material as it is used in state-of-the-art pressure water reactors. This study shows that the ferritic-bainitic steel 22NiMoCr3-7 is suitable for processing with SLM. Suitable process parameters were found with which density values > 99% were achieved. For the comparison of the two materials in this study, the microstructure, hardness values, and tensile strength were compared. By means of a specially adapted heat treatment method, the material properties of the printed material could be approximated to those of the original block material. In particular, the cooling medium/cooling method was adapted and the cooling rate reduced. The targeted ferritic-bainitic microstructure was achieved by this heat treatment. The main difference found between the two materials relates to the grain sizes present. For the forged material, the grain size distribution varies between very fine and slightly coarse grains. The grain size distribution in the printed material is more uniform and the grains are smaller overall. In general, it was difficult and only minimal possible to induce grain growth. As a result, the hardness values of the printed material are also slightly higher. The tensile strength could be approximated to that of the reference material up to 60 MPa. The approximation of the mechanical-technological properties is therefore deemed to be adequate.

Abstract Metal additive manufacturing is a rapidly growing and sophisticated industry however the manufacturing processes and equipment for the heat treatment of the needed powdered metals is underdeveloped. Heat treatment is a key step in the powdered metal production process and is often needed to produce desired material properties. The objective of this paper is to examine the design of a heat treatment machine that addresses the needs of a laboratory performing research on powdered metals. The device was designed to address the three criteria of a heat treatment device; treatment, environment, and containment. The treatment criterion is accomplished by continuous powder flow through a furnace. The environment criterion is accomplished through a gas handling system capable of creating both an argon and vacuum environment. Finally, the containment criterion is accomplished through a network of tubes that provides structure to contain the powder. The design of this machine will allow research and development labs to heat treat powdered to a higher quality at a significantly faster rate.

Abstract Among additive manufacturing technologies, Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is considered the most widespread layer-by-layer process. Although the L-PBF, which is also called as SLM method, has many advantages, several challenging problems must be overcome, including part positioning issues. In this study, the effect of part positioning on the microstructure of the part in the L-PBF method was investigated. Five Ti6Al4V samples were printed in different positions on the building platform and investigated with the aid of temperature, porosity, microstructure and hardness evaluations. In this study, martensitic needles were detected within the microstructure of Ti6Al4V samples. Furthermore, some twins were noticed on primary martensitic lines and the agglomeration of β precipitates was observed in vanadium rich areas. The positioning conditions of samples were revealed to have a strong effect on temperature gradients and on the average size of martensitic lines. Besides, different hardness values were attained depending on sample positioning conditions. As a major result, cooling rates were found related to positions of samples and the location of point on the samples. Higher cooling rates and repetitive cooling cycles resulted in microstructures becoming finer and harder.

Bulky sample was made by using TIG wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology, in which Ф1.6 mm filler wire of in-situ TiB2/Al-Si composites was selected as deposition metal, following by T6 heat treatment. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the bulky sample before and after heat treatment were analyzed. Experimental results showed that the texture of the original samples parallel to the weld direction and perpendicular to the weld direction was similar consisting of columnar dendrites and equiaxed crystals. After T6 heat treatment, the hardness of the sample was increased to 115.85 HV from 62.83 HV, the yield strength of the sample was 273.33 MPa, the average tensile strength was 347.33 MPa, and the average elongation after fracture was 7.96%. Although pore defects existed in the fracture, yet the fracture of the sample was ductile fracture.

In this paper, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-cast and heat treatment of Mg-Zn-Nd alloy was investigated. The alloy was manufactured by a conventional casting method, and then subjected to a heat treatment. The results showed that the microstructure of as-cast alloy was comprised of α-Mg matrix and Mg12Nd phase. With increase of Nd content, the grain size gradually decreased from 25.38 μm to 9.82 μm. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation at room temperature of the Mg94Zn2Nd4 alloy can be reached to 219.63 MPa and 5.31%. After heat treatment, part of the second phase dissolved into the magnesium matrix and the grain size became a little larger than that of the as-cast. The ultimate tensile strength was declined by about 2.5%, and the elongation was increased to 5.47%.

In this study, two biodegradable Mg-Zn-Ca alloys with alloy content of less than 1 wt % were strengthened via high pressure torsion (HPT). A subsequent heat treatment at temperatures of around 0.45 Tm led to an additional, sometimes even larger increase in both hardness and tensile strength. A hardness of more than 110 HV and tensile strength of more than 300 MPa were achieved in Mg-0.2Zn-0.5Ca by this procedure. Microstructural analyses were conducted by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM, respectively) and atom probe tomography (APT) to reveal the origin of this strength increase. They indicated a grain size in the sub-micron range, Ca-rich precipitates, and segregation of the alloying elements at the grain boundaries after HPT-processing. While the grain size and segregation remained mostly unchanged during the heat treatment, the size and density of the precipitates increased slightly. However, estimates with an Orowan-type equation showed that precipitation hardening cannot account for the strength increase observed. Instead, the high concentration of vacancies after HPT-processing is thought to lead to the formation of vacancy agglomerates and dislocation loops in the basal plane, where they represent particularly strong obstacles to dislocation movement, thus, accounting for the considerable strength increase observed. This idea is substantiated by theoretical considerations and quenching experiments, which also show an increase in hardness when the same heat treatment is applied.

This paper will cover some processing routes along with grading and physical/chemical attributes of silica sand. The silica sand in this experiment was divided into four lots, and each of them was processed by the methods of calcining, scrubbing, mulling or rubbing respectively. The test results show that the sand grains which processed by different processing methods are irregular, the acid demand value of sand is lower than that of the base sand, and the grain size distribution of sand is similar to that of the base sand. However, the SiO2 content of processed sand is increased, the impurities content has a downward trend. Compared with the base sand, it can be found that the tensile strength value of molding sand prepared using the processed sands is higher and the bench life is almost no change.

This paper studies the microstructure of drawn gold wires to equivalent strain of 10 and to equivalent strain of 8.5 then heat-treated. The texture of gold wire drawn to strain of 10 is mainly composed of <100> and <111> fibers. Tensile strength of the gold wire increases with <111> fiber fraction, while the grain size does not appear to affect the tensile property. With an exception at heat treatment at 600oC, the texture of gold wire drawn the strain of 8.5 is replaced with <100> fiber component by heat treatment process at 400~700oC. Heat treatment at 600oC produces <110> fiber or <112> fiber, depending upon annealing time.

Abstract The paper analyzes the influence of different heat treatment processes on the mechanical properties of low-alloy high-strength steel denoted by Polish Standard (PN) as 10MnVNb6. One of the findings is that, after aging, the mechanical properties of rolled steel are high: the yield strength may reach > 600 MPa, and the ultimate tensile strength is > 700 MPa. These properties are largely dependent on the grain size and dispersion of the strengthening phase in the ferrite matrix. Aging applied after hot rolling contributes to a considerable rise in the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. The process of normalization causes a decrease in the average grain size and coalescence (reduction of dispersion) of the strengthening phase. When 10MnVNb6 steel was aged after normalization, there was not a complete recovery in its strength properties.

The effects of heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-38644 alloy were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well as uniaxial tensile test. The results show that when the solution temperature is lower than 845°C, the microstructure of Ti-38644 alloy is equiaxed β phase with the grain size of 20μm, and the tensile strength is about 960MPa. As raising solution temperature to 860°C, the grain size of Ti-38644 alloy increases to 100μm and the tensile strength decreased to 870MPa. There are a large number of secondary α phase precipitated from the grain boundaries and within grain of β phase undergoing aging treatment. Secondary α phase coarsens with increasing the aging temperature, leading to the decrease of tensile strength. After solution treatment at 815°C for 1.5h, water quenching plus aging at 520°C for 10h, air cooling, Ti-38644 alloy shows a better mechanical property with the tensile strength 1330MPa, elongation and reduction of area 10% and 45% respectively.
