The growing demand for composite materials with improved properties is attracting a lot of attention from industries such as automotive, aerospace, military, aviation, and other manufacturing. Aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMCs), with various reinforcements such as continuous/discontinuous fibers, whiskers, and particulates, have captured the attention due to their superior tribological, mechanical, and microstructural characteristics as compared to bare Al alloy. AMMCs have undergone extensive research and development with different reinforcements in order to obtain the materials with the desired characteristics. In this paper, we present a review on AMMCs produced through stir casting routes. This review focuses on the following aspects: (i) different reinforcing materials in AMMCs; (ii) microstructural study of reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) through stir casting. Both reinforcing micro- and nanoparticles are focused. Micro- and nanoreinforced AMMCs have the attractive properties of combination such asthe low-weight-to-high-strength rati and, low density; (iii) various tribological and mechanical properties with the consideration of different input parameters; (iv) outlook and perspective.

The automotive manufacturing industry, worldwide, has been engaged in a race to produce lightweight vehicles. Consequently, the industry continues to deploy significant resources in developing and utilising advanced lightweight materials and cutting-edge technologies in the manufacture of new vehicle models that are energy efficient, more reliable, safer, more user-friendly and less polluting; without compromising the other important vehicle attributes such as, size, cargo space and payload, structural integrity, power and acceleration. Mass reduction is one consistent and cost-effective strategy that can be combined with other efficiency improvement strategies and technologies to meet the requirements of fuel economy and emission reduction. The materials used in automotive light-weighting must fulfil several criteria imposed by regulation and legislation with the environment in addition to satisfying customer requirements. The choice for light, high strength automotive materials is between advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) on one hand, and composites of aluminium (aluminium metal matrix composites (AlMMCs)), magnesium and polymers, on the other. In this paper, the potential of AlMMCs as a replacement for most steels and aluminium alloys in the manufacture of automotive parts and components is discussed as well as their current status and future trends of utilisation in automotive light-weighting.

The Synthesis of aluminium matrix composites is receiving considerable emphasis in meeting the requirements of various industries. Due to the desired properties such as low weight, high specific strength, good corrosion resistance and excellent wear resistance, they have received a great interest in the recent years. Metal-matrix composites (MMCs) based on aluminium and magnesium has emerged as an important class of materials and Al2O3can be considered as ideal reinforcements, due to their high strength, high aspect ratio and thermo-mechanical properties. The objective of this work is to reinforce Al 1100-Mg alloy with different wt% of Al2O3(0, 3, 6, 9 and 12) was added by melt stirring method and Extrusion is carried out (extrusion ratio of 12.25) for the same alloy and composites. Mechanical property like hardness and tensile properties have been investigated for cast and extruded of base alloy and composites.

Among the various types of manufacturing process methods for discontinuous metal matrix composite, stir casting is the best suitable manufacturing process to fabricate particulate reinforced metal matrix composite. Its benefit is its simplicity, durability, and adaptability. The main issue in this process is proper wetting of reinforcement in aluminium matrix material. Only proper wetting results in a homogeneous dispersion of reinforcement material, and these homogeneous dispersions help to improve the properties of metal matrix composite material. The purpose of this paper was to discuss the outline of the stir casting process, process parameters, and the contribution effect of process parameters. This paper also presents about of the conditions should follow during the addition of reinforcement material and matrix material pouring in mould cavity. This paper also discusses the conditions that must be met during the addition of reinforcement material and matrix material pouring in the mould cavity. This paper also looked into the impact and contribution of stirring casting time, speed, and temperature in aluminium metal matrix composites, as well as processing issues in aluminium metal matrix composites, challenges, and research opportunities.

Aluminium metal matrix composites are pretty much important in the different demanding sectors such as in the field of medicine and engineering like automobiles, aerospace, defence, dental and consumer goods. The need arises due to its huge calibre in industrial need of good materials with lighter weight, excellent properties and economical in cost demanded the researchers or scientists research on composite materials. The AMMCs or Al-MMCs consists of an apex variety of mechanical properties which is directly proportional to the chemical composition of the Aluminium matrix. To enhance strength the reinforcement plays a key role in AMMCs could be in the form of continuous/ discontinuous fibres, whiskers & particulate as the second phase depending on their applications and property requirements. In addition to it, various strength enhancers are reinforcements such as fly ash, TiC, SiC, Al2O3, TiO2, B4C etc. This paper attempts to review the different combinations in the processing of aluminium metal matrix composites along with their properties and their applications.

Aluminium Hybrid Composites are the new group of metal matrix composites (MMCs) due to their attractive properties like high ductility, high conductivity, light weight and high strength to weight ratio and is a response to the dynamic ever-increasing demand of these super material in the field of aircrafts and marines. Carbon Nanotube (CNTs) are also known for their high strength and stiffness and their low density which when combined together makes CNTs an ideal reinforcement. This work briefly reviews the research revelation of an Aluminium (Al-6061) based hybrid metal matrix composite reinforced with CNTs and TiO2. The Hybrid Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites (AMMCs) is prepared with various CNTs weight percentages (0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt. %) and keeping TiO2 weight percentage fixed to 1%.Stir Casting (SC) is focused in general to successfully fabricate the MMCs. The discussion of this work revolves around tensile test, hardness test, and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) of the MMC. The mechanical properties of the fabricated MMCs materials like tensile strength, hardness and impact strength is found by using these experimental methods. It has been observed that the tensile strength of the MMCs increases in the presence of TiO2 and CNTs and increases even more with the increase in the weight fraction of CNTs. Same results have been obtained for hardness and impact strength where there is an increase in them in the presence of TiO2 and CNT and their value increases even further with increase in weight fraction of CNTs.

Todays composite material have gained more popularity due to their improved properties over the conventional materials. In the present paper, insitu composites were fabricated via chemical reaction between molten aluminium alloy and halide salt KBF4 with cryolite at 8000C by stir casting method. The microstructures of the composite containing 3 and 5 wt. % of AlB2 reinforcement phase have been compared with the unreinforced aluminium alloy. The microstructure analysis shows clean AlB2 particles uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. With the increase in the AlB2 reinforcement, insitu composite show less agglomeration and recovery of boron is more when compared to the unmixed halide salt in the fabrication of inistu composite

Aluminium metal matrix composites wear characterization is presented in the paper. The LM25 grade aluminium alloy is chosen as matrix material and reinforcements are silicon carbide, zircon and garnet particles. AlMMCs are produced by conventional stir casting method and heat treated before making wear test specimens according to the ASTM G99 standards. The wear behaviour of these composites is studied under laboratory conditions using a pin-on-disc wear test rig. The wear behaviour of these composites is studied under sliding on EN32 steel disc. The influence of reinforcement type, volume fraction, particle size, sliding speed, applied load and sliding distance is analyzed.
