Riveting is widely used in aircraft manufacturing. The strap butt joint is often used in the aircraft’s main bearing area such as the aircraft docking area. The connection quality affects the reliability and safety of the aircraft directly. To study the effect of the rivet position on the connection quality of the strap butt joints, this paper analyzed the distribution of stress around the rivet hole at different positions by the finite element method, and then further analyzed the influence of the different rivet layouts on the connection quality of the strap butt joints by experiments. The static load tensile failure test of the joints was carried out, and the obtained tensile strength and failure mode of the strap butt joints showed that the main static tensile failure form of the single strap butt joint is that the whole rivets is sheared and the connecting sheets are separated. By changing the layout of different rivets, the connection strength can be maximized by reducing the outer row spacing (ORSD) of rivets. The results can be used for reference in the design of the riveting structure of aircraft panels.

Effects of pipe dimensions and outer surface-buttering weld conditions on residual stress distributions were evaluated using the finite element method. Residual stresses were analyzed for 508–mm-diameter (500A) pipe 38.1 mm thick, 508–mm-diameter (500A) pipe 15.1 mm thick, and 267–mm-diameter (250A) pipe 15.1 mm thick. After the residual stresses at pipe butt joints were analyzed, residual stresses at these joints subjected to the outer surface-buttering welds were analyzed. Residual stresses were determined for various weld widths, thicknesses, and heat inputs. These analyses indicate that tensile axial stress occurred at inner surface of the pipe butt joint and that it decreased with increasing the outer surface buttering-weld width or heat input. They also indicate that compressive hoop stress occurred at inner surface of the joint and that outer surface-buttering weld increased it. The outer surface-buttering weld conditions that generate compressive residual stress at the inner surface of the pipe butt joints were determined.

Abstract The paper describes the intention of the authors to determine whether it is possible to predict relative belt edge endurance for radial passenger car tires using the finite element method. Three groups of tires with different belt edge configurations were tested on a fleet test in an attempt to validate predictions from the finite element results. A two-dimensional, axisymmetric finite element analysis was first used to determine if the results from such an analysis, with emphasis on the shear deformations between the belts, could be used to predict a relative ranking for belt edge endurance. It is shown that such an analysis can lead to erroneous conclusions. A three-dimensional analysis in which tires are modeled under free rotation and static vertical loading was performed next. This approach resulted in an improvement in the quality of the correlations. The differences in the predicted values of various stress analysis parameters for the three belt edge configurations are studied and their implication on predicting belt edge endurance is discussed.

Abstract The paper considers the failure study of concrete structures loaded by the pressure wave due to detonation of an explosive material. In the paper two numerical methods are used and their efficiency and accuracy are compared. There are the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). The numerical examples take into account the dynamic behaviour of concrete slab or a structure composed of two concrete slabs subjected to the blast impact coming from one side. The influence of reinforcement in the slab (1, 2 or 3 layers) is also presented and compared with a pure concrete one. The influence of mesh density for FEM and the influence of important parameters in SPH like a smoothing length or a particle distance on the quality of the results are discussed in the paper

The stringer-stiffened structure is widely used due to its excellent mechanical properties. Improving the manufacturing quality of stringer-stiffened structure which have complex geometry is important to ensure the bearing capacity of aviation components. Herein, composite hat-stiffened composite structures were manufactured by different filling forms and bladders with various properties, the deformation of silicone rubber bladder in co-curing process was studied by using the finite element method. The thickness measurement at different positions of the hat-stiffened structure was performed to determine the best filling form and bladder property. Moreover, in view of the detection difficulties in R-zone of stringer, numerical simulation was performed to get the sound pressure and impulse response of at the R-zone of stringer by Rayleigh integration method, and an effective equipment which could stably detect the manufacturing quality of R-zone was designed to verify the correctness of sound field simulation and realize the detection of stringer. With the optimum filling form and bladder properties, hat-stiffened composites can be manufactured integrally with improved surface quality and geometric accuracy, based on co-curing process.

In this study, the rapid growth of corrugation caused by the bad quality of grinding works and their wavelength, depth, and evolution processes are captured through field measurements. The residual grinding marks left by poor grinding quality lead to further crack accumulation and corrugation deterioration by decreasing plastic resistance in rails. In this case, the average peak-to-peak values of corrugation grow extremely fast, reaching 1.4 μm per day. The finite element method (FEM) and fracture mechanics methodologies were used to analyze the development and trends in rail surface crack deterioration by considering rails with and without grinding marks. Crack propagation trends increase with residual grinding marks, and they are more severe in circular curve lines. To avoid the rapid deterioration of rail corrugation, intersections between grinding marks and fatigue cracks should be avoided.

To determine the efficiency, load-bearing capacity and fatigue life of beveloid gears with intersecting axes, we design a mechanical gear test bed with closed power flow. To test the quality of its structure and predict its overall performance, we establish a three-dimensional solid model for various components based on the design parameters and adopt the technology of virtual prototyping simulation to conduct kinematics simulation on it. Then observe and verify the interactive kinematic situation of each component. Moreover, the finite element method is also utilized to carry out structural mechanics and dynamics analysis on some key components. The results indicate that the test bed can achieve the desired functionality, and the static and dynamic performance of some key components can also satisfy us.

Pre-produced triplate transition joint assemblies are widely used in shipbuilding industry to make welds between aluminum and steel for a number of years now. The straight-shaped transition joint assemblies are bent during shipbuilding. So it is necessary to study the residual stresses created by punch forming, which would have heavy effects on the quality of structural parts. ABAQUS is a suite of powerful engineering simulation programs, based on the finite element method. In this paper, ABAQUS was used as the main tool to simulate the residual stresses in a triplate transition joint after unloading. Punch-pressing was carried to simulate bending moment in ABAQUS. The triplate is consisted of baselayer (steel: Lloyd’s Shipplate Gr. A), interlayer (pure aluminum: Al99.5) and superlayer (Al-Mg alloy: AlMg4.5Mn). Results from the ABAQUS analysis showed that increasing the radius of punch significantly reduced the von Mises residual stresses in steel. Changes of von Mises residual stresses in interlayer (Al99.5) and superlayer (AlMg4.5Mn) were negligible.

Abstract Corporations are spending significant resources to reduce the effect of manufacturing variation on product quality as well as adopt lower cost manufacturing and assembly technologies to reduce the end costs in product development. However, to ensure that these investments have a positive return, efforts must be made to put resources into those areas where there will be the largest return. This paper describes a formalized method to make these decisions. The analysis focuses the tradeoff studies on the Key Characteristics (KCs) of the product. KCs, in use in a variety of industries, are the product features that are most sensitive to existing manufacturing and process variation and will affect the end quality of the product. Two examples from the aircraft manufacturing environment are used describe the application of the proposed methods.

This paper deals with the roller chain commonly used for transmission of mechanical power on many kinds of industrial machinery, including conveyors, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and so forth. It consists of a series of four components called a pin, a bush, a plate, and a roller, which are driven by a sprocket. To clarify the fatigue damage, in this paper, the finite element method (FEM) is applied to those components under three different types of states, that is, the press-fitting state, the static tensile state, and the sprocket-engaging state. By comparing those states, the stress amplitude and the average stress of each component are calculated and plotted on the fatigue limit diagram. The effect of the plastic zone on the fatigue strength is also discussed. The results show that the fatigue crack initiation may start around the middle inner surface of the bush. As am example, the FEM results show that the fatigue crack of the inner plate may start from a certain point at the hole edge. The results agree with the actual fractured position in roller chains used in industry.

Metal inert gas arc welding process was implemented to join 6063T6 wrought alloy and ADC12 die-casting alloy using ER4047 filler metal. The microstructure of the weld seam and weld interface was investigated. The bonding strength of the butt joints was tested by Charpy U-notch impact test and tensile test. The results showed that a sound welding butt joint with finely silicon particles and excellent mechanical properties was formed, and the size of the silicon particles was nearly 2 μm. Compared with 6063T6 wrought alloy, the impact absorbing energies and the tensile strengths of the butt joint were higher and reached 1.173 kJ/cm2 and 205 MPa, respectively, and the fractures of all tensile specimens occur at the 6063T6 aluminum.
