Since heat affected zone (HAZ) is the weak area of welded joints, this article proposes a method to predict the HAZ microstructure and hardness for the triple-wire gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process of Q960E high strength steel. This method combines welding thermal simulation and numerical simulation. The microstructures and hardness of Q960E steel under different cooling rates were obtained by thermal simulation and presented in a simulated HAZ continuous cooling transformation (SH-CCT) diagram. The cooling rate in HAZ were obtained by numerical simulation with ANSYS software for the triple-wire welding of Q960E thick plates. By comparing the cooling rate with the SH-CCT diagram, the microstructure and hardness of the HAZ coarse-grained region were accurately predicted for multiple heat input conditions. Further, an ideal heat input was chosen by checking the prediction results. This prediction method not only helps us to optimize the welding parameters, but also leads to an overall understanding of the process-microstructure-performance for a complex welding process.

AbstractThis study concerns the weldability of dissimilar Ultra high-strength steel (UHSS) and advanced high-strength steel (AHSS), which is used in the modern machine industry. The materials offered superior strength as well as relatively low weight, which reduces microstructure contamination during a live cycle. The choice of the welding process base of the base material (BM) and welding parameters is essential to improve the weld joint quality. S700MC/S960QC was welded using a gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process and overmatched filler wire, which was performed using three heat input (7, 10, and 15 kJ/cm). The weld samples were characterized by a Vickers-hardness test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The test reveals a decrease of softening areas in the HAZ and the formation of the stable formation of Bainite-Ferrite for S700MC and Bainite-martensite for S960QC when the heat input of 10 kJ/cm is used. It is recommended to use the GMAW process and Laser welding (Laser beam-MIG), with an optimal welding parameter, which will be achieved a high quality of manufacturing products.

The effect of heat input on the transformation of retained austenite steels transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) was investigated in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the Gas Metal Arc Welding GMAW process. The determination of retained austenite of the HAZ is important in optimizing the welding parameters when welding TRIP steels, because this will greatly influence the mechanical properties of the welding joint due to the transformation of residual austenite into martensite due to work hardening. Coupons were welded with high and low heat input for investigating the austenite transformation of the base metal due to heat applied by the welding process and was evaluated by optical microscopy and the method of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Data analyzed shows that the volume fraction of retained austenite in the HAZ increases with the heat input applied by the welding process, being greater as the heat input increase and decrease the cooling rate, this due to variation in the travel speed of the weld path.

Sulfide stress cracking (SSC) is one of the most dangerous types of pipelines destruction. Thermal impact of the welding process drives to heterogeneity of the microstructure and properties of the metal, which can lead to cracking of pipeline welded joints. Resistance to SSC of welded joints is determined by the thermal cycle of welding and cooling rate in the temperature range of austenite transformation. Due to performed studies based on simulation of welding heating the recommended range of cooling rates of 10–30 ° C/s was established, in which the resistance to SSC of welded joints is ensured. To calculate the cooling rates in coarse grained heat affected zone (CGHAZ) finite-element models of heat distribution were developed for longitudinal multi-electrode submerged arc welding (SAW) and multi-pass girth welding of pipes. Using the developed welding models, it was found that in order to achieve the cooling rate in CGHAZ it is necessary to reduce heat input up to 15-30% during multi-electrode SAW process of longitudinal welds of pipes . For multi-pass girth welding it is necessary to preheat the edges to be welded up to 100-300 °C depending on type of welding (GMAW or SMAW) and pipe wall thickness.

The effect of heat input on the microstructure and mechanical properties of dissimilar S700MC/S960QC high-strength steels (HSS) using undermatched filler material was evaluated. Experiments were performed using the gas metal arc welding process to weld three samples, which had three different heat input values (i.e., 15 kJ/cm, 7 kJ/cm, and 10 kJ/cm). The cooling continuous temperature (CCT) diagrams, macro-hardness values, microstructure formations, alloy element compositions, and tensile test analyses were performed with the aim of providing valuable information for improving the strength of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of both materials. Micro-hardness measurement was conducted using the Vickers hardness test and microstructural evaluation by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The mechanical properties were characterized by tensile testing. Dissimilar welded samples (S700MC/S960QC) with a cooling rate of 10 °C/s (15 kJ/cm) showed a lower than average hardness (210 HV5) in the HAZ of S700MC than S960QC. This hardness was 18% lower compared to the value of the base material (BM). The best microstructure formation was obtained using a heat input of 10 kJ/cm, which led to the formation of bainite (B, 60% volume fraction), ferrite (F, 25% volume fraction), and retained austenite (RA, 10%) in the final microstructure of S700MC, and B (55%), martensite (M, 45%), and RA (10%), which developed at the end of the transformation of S960QC. The results showed the presence of 1.3 Ni, 0.4 Mo, and 1.6 Mn in the fine-grain heat-affected zone of S700MC. The formation of a higher carbide content at a lower cooling rate reduced both the hardness and strength.

Bead size and shape are important considerations for industry design and quality detection. It is hard to deduce an appropriate mathematical model for predicting the bead geometry in a continually changing welding process due to the complex interrelationship between different welding parameters and the actual bead. In this paper, an artificial neural network model for predicting the bead geometry with changing welding speed was developed. The experiment was performed by a welding robot in gas metal arc welding process. The welding speed was stochastically changed during the welding process. By transient response tests, it was indicated that the changing welding speed had a spatial influence on bead geometry, which ranged from 10 mm backward to 22 mm forward with certain welding parameters. For this study, the input parameters of model were the spatial welding speed sequence, and the output parameters were bead width and reinforcement. The bead geometry was recognized by polynomial fitting of the profile coordinates, as measured by a structured laser light sensor. The results showed that the model with the structure of 33-6-2 had achieved high accuracy in both the training dataset and test dataset, which were 99% and 96%, respectively.

In this study, lap joint experiments were conducted using galvanized high-strength steel, SGAFH 590 FB 2.3 mmt, which was applied to automotive chassis components in the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process. Zinc residues were confirmed using a semi-quantitative energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the porosity in the weld. In addition, a tensile shear test was performed to evaluate the weldability. Furthermore, the effect of porosity defects, such as blowholes and pits generated in the weld, on the tensile shear strength was experimentally verified by comparing the porosity at the weld section of the tensile test specimen with that measured through radiographic testing.

In order to meet the upcoming regulations on greenhouse gas emissions, aluminum use in the automotive industry is increasing. However, this increase is now seen as part of a multimaterial strategy. Consequently, dissimilar material joints are a reality, which poses significant challenges to conventional fusion joining processes. To address this issue, cold metal transfer (CMT) spot welding process was developed in the current study to join aluminum alloy AA6061-T6 as the top sheet to hot dip galvanized (HDG) advanced high strength steel (AHSS) DP590 as the bottom sheet. Three different welding modes, i.e., direct welding (DW) mode, plug welding (PW) mode, and edge plug welding (EPW) mode were proposed and investigated. The DW mode, having no predrilled hole in the aluminum top sheet, required concentrated heat input to melt through the Al top sheet and resulted in a severe tearing fracture, shrinkage voids, and uneven intermetallic compounds (IMC) layer along the faying surface, leading to poor joint properties. Welding with the predrilled hole, PW mode, required significantly less heat input and led to greatly reduced, albeit uneven, IMC layer thickness. However, it was found that the EPW mode could homogenize the welding heat input into the hole and thus produce the most stable welding process and best joint quality. This led to joints having an excellent joint morphology characterized by the thinnest IMC layer and consequently, best mechanical performance among the three modes.

Utilizing submerged arc welding under heat input 50 kJ/cm on 60 mm thick marine engineering structure plate F550, the effect of preheating and post welding heat treatment on the microstructure and impact toughness of coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) has been investigated. The original microstructure of the steel plate is tempered martensite. The yield and tensile strength is 610 and 660 MPa, respectively. The impact absorbed energy at low temperature (-60 °C) at transverse direction reaches about 230~270 J. Welding results show that the preheating at 100 °C did not have obvious influence on the microstructure and toughness; whereas the tempering at 600 °C for 2.5 h after welding could significantly reduce the amount of M-A components in the coarse-grained heat-affected zone and thus improved the low temperature impact toughness.

Boiler and steam piping components in power plants are fabricated using creep strength enhanced ferritic (CSEF) steels, which often operate at temperatures above 550°C. Modification of alloy content within these steels has produced better creep performance and higher operating temperatures, which increases the process efficiency of power plants. The improved materials, however, are susceptible to type IV cracking at the welded regions. A better understanding of type IV cracking in these materials is required and is the basis of the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) UK funded VALID (Verified Approaches to Life Management & Improved Design of High Temperature Steels for Advanced Steam Plants) project. In order to study the relationship between creep performance and heat input during welding, several welds with varying amounts of heat input and resultant HAZ widths were produced using the electron beam welding process. The welding parameters were developed with the aid of weld process modeling using the finite element (FE) method, in which the welding parameters were optimized to produce low, medium and high heat input welds. In this paper, the modeling approach and the development of electron beam welds in ASTM A387 grade P92 pipe material are presented. Creep specimens were extracted from the welded pipes and testing is ongoing.
