A bio-inspired nanofibrous MnO2-TiO2-carbon composite was prepared by utilizing natural cellulosic substances (e.g., ordinary quantitative ashless filter paper) as both the carbon source and structural matrix. Mesoporous MnO2 nanosheets were densely immobilized on an ultrathin titania film precoated with cellulose-derived carbon nanofibers, which gave a hierarchical MnO2-TiO2-carbon nanoarchitecture and exhibited excellent electrochemical performances when used as an anodic material for lithium-ion batteries. The MnO2-TiO2-carbon composite with a MnO2 content of 47.28 wt % exhibited a specific discharge capacity of 677 mAh g−1 after 130 repeated charge/discharge cycles at a current rate of 100 mA g−1. The contribution percentage of MnO2 in the composite material is equivalent to 95.1% of the theoretical capacity of MnO2 (1230 mAh g−1). The ultrathin TiO2 precoating layer with a thickness ca. 2 nm acts as a crucial interlayer that facilitates the growth of well-organized MnO2 nanosheets onto the surface of the titania-carbon nanofibers. Due to the interweaved network structures of the carbon nanofibers and the increased content of the immobilized MnO2, the exfoliation and aggregation, as well as the large volume change of the MnO2 nanosheets, are significantly inhibited; thus, the MnO2-TiO2-carbon electrodes displayed outstanding cycling performance and a reversible rate capability during the Li+ insertion/extraction processes.

ABSTRACTAn efficient microwave-assisted polyol (MP) approach is report to prepare SnO2/graphene hybrid as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The key factor to this MP method is to start with uniform graphene oxide (GO) suspension, in which a large amount of surface oxygenate groups ensures homogeneous distribution of the SnO2 nanoparticles onto the GO sheets under the microwave irradiation. The period for the microwave heating only takes 10 min. The obtained SnO2/graphene hybrid anode possesses a reversible capacity of 967 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and a high Coulombic efficiency of 80.5% at the first cycle. The cycling performance and the rate capability of the hybrid anode are enhanced in comparison with that of the bare graphene anode. This improvement of electrochemical performance can be attributed to the formation of a 3-dimensional framework. Accordingly, this study provides an economical MP route for the fabrication of SnO2/graphene hybrid as an anode material for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers have been widely applied in various fields including photocatalysis, energy storage and solar cells due to the advantages of low cost, high abundance and nontoxicity. However, the low conductivity of ions and bulk electrons hinder its rapid development in lithium-ion batteries (LIB). In order to improve the electrochemical performances of TiO2 nanomaterials as anode for LIB, hierarchically porous TiO2 nanofibers with different tetrabutyl titanate (TBT)/paraffin oil ratios were prepared as anode for LIB via a versatile single-nozzle microemulsion electrospinning (ME-ES) method followed by calcining. The experimental results indicated that TiO2 nanofibers with the higher TBT/paraffin oil ratio demonstrated more axially aligned channels and a larger specific surface area. Furthermore, they presented superior lithium-ion storage properties in terms of specific capacity, rate capability and cycling performance compared with solid TiO2 nanofibers for LIB. The initial discharge and charge capacity of porous TiO2 nanofibers with a TBT/paraffin oil ratio of 2.25 reached up to 634.72 and 390.42 mAh·g−1, thus resulting in a coulombic efficiency of 61.51%; and the discharge capacity maintained 264.56 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles, which was much higher than that of solid TiO2 nanofibers. TiO2 nanofibers with TBT/paraffin oil ratio of 2.25 still obtained a high reversible capacity of 204.53 mAh·g−1 when current density returned back to 40 mA·g−1 after 60 cycles at increasing stepwise current density from 40 mA·g−1 to 800 mA·g−1. Herein, hierarchically porous TiO2 nanofibers have the potential to be applied as anode for lithium-ion batteries in practical applications.
